Parity, parity, parity. South Florida Shocks Marquette 57-56 : Tampa must have been rockin' last night as the unheralded 8-14 Bulls upended the eight-ranked Golden Eagles by one after a Dominique Jones layup with 15 seconds on the clock. Stan Heath's team wasn't even considered on its home turf after falling to ranked opponents five times this season. But a team effort led by senior guard Jesus Verdejo's 21 was enough to topple one of the premiere teams in the country. Despite Jerel McNeal's game leading 22 for Marq the Bulls contained the Birds from the arc, and Buzz Williams' team didn't fair much better from the line. Marquette faces #17 Villanova Tuesday.

More parity! Duquesne upsets Xavier 72-68--How many times has this happened this season? Ten? The Dukes from Pittsburgh haven't beaten a top ten team in 16 years. But third-year coach Ron Everhart didn't let that stop his game plan. The much-improved DD's are competitive now in the Atlantic 10 and they showed it yesterday, as guards Bill Clark and Aaron Jacskon combined for 38 points. They have eight freshmen on the team, yet they shot 81% in the first half. They failed to score a basket in the last 7 minutes yet still beat the #9 team. How good will the Dukes be in the future?
Florida State smacks #10 Clemson--Clemson is a good team but beatable. Obviously. The Tigers grew cold in the second half while Seminole Toney Douglass heated up, ending with 23 points. Clemson coach Oliver Purnell saw something familiar in this: their shooting faltered against Wake and they were practically nonexistent in the second half against the Tarheels. 7'1" center Solomon Alabi added 17 for FSU while no Clemson player topped 11.

Zags, to final 4.... they need a deep run, Purdue will go to elite 8. other than that can you say year of the Tar Heels?

Why no mention of Davidson's game last night, maildude?

Curry was cold but still managed 23. They were tensed about tying the conference win record. It likely got to them. And still they only lost by two. How come I never see you post in here?

If Purdue makes it to the Elite Eight, they'd better have started in a weak bracket.

Missouri fan. Even if they get to the Dance - and they should be ranked this week after winning at Texas :nanner: - they'll probablly just get knocked out in the 1st round like they usually do. :(

Naw. Mizzou is actually a pretty good team. They only have four losses to some pretty decent teams. But they have Kansas twice and one more at OK which will be a damned important game. DeMarre Carroll almost scores at will and Anderson has put together a good squad. The Tiges need to stop shuffling their feet against weaker opponents, post up against the big teams, and move the ball around--when their assist totals are high they seem to do better. Also this is the most wins since their last Tourney appearance six years ago. Hope that doesn't psyche them...in the wrong way.

The Ohio State Buckeyes have won 4 in a row and are tied for second in the Big 10

Upcoming key games: Illinois and Purdue. But none of the remaining games are gimmes...not for this squad which tends to lack consistency and intensity. If David Lighty makes it back by tournament time and is healthy, the Bucks have a shot at the Sixteen unless they pull a tough bracket. Other than Turner, the S&G have a hole at point guard. If Turner gets hurt or loses too much steam from overwork the Bucks are finished. This team is overachieving right now. Sorry, but that's the way it is. They still have a shot despite their windedness if Matta can get consistent production from Mullins and Hill.

After trailing Kansas 30 - 16 at halftime Missouri comes back to win . . . 62-60 :nanner:

Terrific second half. Outstanding defense from Mizzou. Great game from Carroll, Lyons, and even Tiller who only had 3 points but also had 4 assists, 4 rebounds and 4 steals. Kansas out rebounded them by a huge margin but Mizzou's D forced a lot of turnovers.

I'm starting to believe, maildude . . .

Kansas is another streaky team. We beat them senseless with minimal effort, but then they come back with eight straight wins. Collins is a real talent but he slumps occasionally--esp. with his arc shooting. The Hawks won the rebounding war big time against the Tigers but screwed up with turnovers and missed shots in the second half. Anderson was smart enough to adjust because he knows Kansas has a weakness in this area. Tiller and Ramsey weren't the scorers yesterday but deserve high marks for defense and ball movement.

Tough schedule the rest of the way though. Even Colorado - whom they blew out 107-62 - might not be such a gimme. The Buffalos have been a lot better lately, only losing to Kansas, Nebraska and Oklahoma by 5, 2, and 5 repectively. And Texas A&M might be trying to fight their way into Tourney that last game of the season.

Oh, and that win gave them 6 against an opponent with an RPI in the top 50.

College basketball as I've often said is a streaky game. Villanova smacks Marquette 102-84--Coach Jay Wright had to be pleased with the way his team shot yesterday. 71% in the second half and 13-24 from long range. Junior guard Scottie Reynolds led the way with 27, but got lots of support, namely from Corey Fisher with 21. Jerel McNeal scored 23 for the Golden Eagles and became the program's all-time scoring leader. But is Buzz Williams worried about this two-game slide? The coach has one of the best front four in the nation, but routinely rests and rotates his players even when they aren't in foul trouble. Villanova is peaking at the right time with six straight wins, with a fairly favorable remaining schedule. The Birds and Buzz might rethink policy: they face three of the Top 5 teams in their final seven games.

I can't wait for UNC vs Duke game tonight!

I hope UNC beats Duke in a buzzer beater! I just hate those Duke Blue Devils!

Well then congratulations!

In other news...

Dayton Stuns Xavier 71-58--Somebody should have told X coach Sean Miller that the Flyers are for real. Now it's too late. Dayton has overtaken Xavier for the number 2 spot in the Atlantic 10. Sophomore forward Chris Wright--how appropriate--led the Daytons with 18, but it was a team effort fueled by pressure defense led by guard Rob Lowery--who left the game in the first half with a knee strain--that allowed the Flyers to lead all the way and send X packing for its second straight loss. Dayton coach Brian Gregory will likely now rely on soph Stephen Thomas to fill Lowery's shoes. Miller blames poor defense on the losses, and who can blame him? The Muskies tend to recede a bit when they trail, and the Duquesne Dukes exploited that fact with a boatload of pressure on the X ballhandlers--so did Dayton.

Irish Surprise Louisville 90-57--Junior forward Luke Harangody had 17 rebounds and 32 points as coach Mike Brey's squad shot 54 percent and scored their best margin of victory of the season. This following an embarrassing loss to UCLA in which Harangody had five points and the elocutive Brey threatened to shake the team up. Meanwhile Cardinals coach Rick Pitino claimed he would force his team to rewatch the game films to show "how they embarrassed themselves."
Arizona State Tops UCLA For Second Time 74-67--Point totals were spread around liberally for coach Herb Sendek, but it was sophomore guard James Harden who shined, with 11 assists and 7 rebounds. Props also to Sun Devil senior forward Jeff Pendergraph who had 9 rebounds and 2 blocks. The Devils managed to keep out of foul trouble as the Bruins were hit with a controversial charging call against guard Darren Collison with just over a minute to go. Despite this, UCLA got into untimely foul trouble down the stretch culminating in a disastrous technical against Alfred Aboya, leading to an AZSt four-point surge.
