NFL '24 Season Thread

Per NFL dotcom's summary:

The offense didn’t achieve a first down until its fifth drive, with just under four minutes remaining in the first half. Bryce Young threw an interception into traffic on the very next play. He managed just 84 yards through the air, the lowest total of his career, on 18-of-26 passing. Even when there was some progress, the team was far too undisciplined, leading to 90 penalty yards on nine infractions. All of it is why the Panthers are already staring at a negative-60 hole in point differential through two games.

Nex Gen stat of the game: Bryce Young did not complete a single pass over 10 air yards. He attempted only two passes over 10 air yards despite trailing on every one of his dropbacks.

Bryce Young benched. Panthers to start Andy Dalton against the Raiders. Among the worst trades in NFL history to move up and get him. Barring a significant turnaround in his career, Young himself looks like he will go down as one of the worst busts in NFL history. Life is pain.
The grievous windbags at ESPN have been squawking about this all morning. If Panther fans want a shoulder to cry on about bad draft picks, go talk to a Bengals fan. Or a Lions fan a few years ago. Come to think of it, you can do a five-state tour around the Great Lakes and cry your eyes out on somebody's shoulder.

In a surprising move, the Jets have fired Head Coach Robert Saleh.

Drake Maye is now New England's starting quarterback.

Oooooo!! I .. "scooped" Yak!

NY Jets acquired Davante Adams from the Raiders in exchange for a conditional third-round pick.

Aaron Rodgers gets his buddy to New York as the Jets season is on the brink following a devastating Monday night loss to the Bills. Adams, who has missed three straight games with a supposed hamstring injury, could suit up for the Jets as soon as Week 7 against the Steelers if his injury suddenly heals. The third round draft pick acquired by the Raiders could turn into a second round pick if Adams performs well for the remainder of the 2024 season. The Jets will pick up the remaining $11.6 million on Adams’ 2024 deal. Adams’ inclusion in the Jets offense is a major blow to Garrett Wilson’s fantasy prospects. Wilson has lived off of target volume this season and Adams will surely step in as the team’s unquestioned alpha wideout. Brock Bowers should continue seeing as many opportunities as any tight end in the NFL with Adams leaving Las Vegas, and Jakobi Meyers should be somewhat reliable as a WR3 with Adams gone.

Make that a double-scoop (ice-cream cone)!

Bills acquired Amari Cooper and a 2025 sixth-round pick from the Browns in exchange for a 2025 third-round pick and a 2026 seventh-round pick.

Cooper’s contract adjustment that pushed his salary cap figure down earlier this year pointed strongly at the idea that he would be available and the Bills swoop in and get the deal done. There probably isn’t a bigger upgrade from a fantasy perspective than being excised from Deshaun Watson and dropped into place as the clear No. 1 target for a team with Josh Allen. Cooper should step in and start providing WR2 numbers even if the direction of the offense remains run-focused. This is not great news for Khalil Shakir or Dalton Kincaid. David Njoku and Jerry Jeudy stand to benefit in Cleveland, or would if they were playing with a better quarterback.

Looks like a torn ACL for Brandon Aiyuk.

Deshuan Watson appears to have torn his Achilles.

Both injuries would be season-ending.

The NFL is seeing more trades, the past few years. I like it!

Chiefs acquired WR DeAndre Hopkins from the Titans in exchange for a conditional fourth-round draft pick.

It’s a move the Chiefs were almost forced to make ahead of the NFL’s trade deadline after losing JuJu Smith-Schuster to a hamstring injury in Week 7. Kansas City had already lost Rashee Rice (knee) and Marquise Brown (shoulder) for the season and obviously did not want to rely on rookie Xavier Worthy as the team’s top wideout option. Hopkins should instantly soak up short-area and intermediate looks from Patrick Mahomes — the kind that made Rice and, briefly, Smith-Schuster, so valuable for fantasy purposes. Look for the KC target distribution to narrow in the coming weeks, with Travis Kelce and Hopkins, 32, dominating opportunities in a Chiefs offense that is uncharacteristically 4 percent below its expected drop back rate over the past month. Calvin Ridley should see a target bump in the Tennessee offense with Hopkins out of the picture.

Poor Yak.. There goes the Panther's #1 WR!

Ravens acquired WR Diontae Johnson and a 2025 sixth-round pick from the Panthers for a 2024 fifth-round pick.

Sure didn’t seem like a huge cost for the Ravens, though it does shake up their receiver room and make it hard to trust for fantasy purposes. Zay Flowers is hurt the most by the acquisition, as he was (by target volume) the uncontested No. 1 wideout. He likely slides down to the WR3/FLEX borderline due to the uncertainty. Rashod Bateman becomes a touchdown-or-bust proposition. For Carolina, Xavier Legette pushes into the FLEX conversation on target volume despite being on a bad passing offense. Jalen Coker also is rosterable in deeper leagues. It’s worth holding Dionate Johnson for the moment, but he may be droppable in most leagues if he’s not a big part of the Ravens offense after a week or two.

He's an unrestricted free agent next year and was not going to resign with the team so I guess the thinking was to get something for him. I like the idea of trading him in this situation but do not like what they "got" in this trade. They get Baltimore's 5th rounder and sent the Ravens their 6th round pick for the upcoming draft. Baltimore's pick will almost certainly be toward the end of the round whereas Carolina's 6th will be early in the round. We obviously will have to wait and see in April but this trade may ultimately only move them up a few picks. Hard to believe they couldn't get anything better. They're a dumpster fire that has been dipped in AIDS. I hope it gets better soon.

Panthers beat Saints. Derek Carr is the first quarterback in NFL history to lose to 31 teams.

On a more positive note, from USA Today's 32 things NFL Article:

27. But it was Lamar Jackson who had another near-flawless performance – and perfect 158.3 passer rating (16-for-19, 280 yards, 3 TDs) – as he continues to track toward a third league MVP award.

27a. It was the fourth time in Jackson's career that he aced the QB rating with a 158.3 score – a new NFL record after he broke a tie with Hall of Famers Peyton Manning and Kurt Warner and future HOFers Tom Brady and Ben Roethlisberger.

Things continue to go poorly in Dallas as it appears Dak Prescott will have season-ending surgery due to a partially torn hamstring.
