great thread. i was flicking through the music channels today and stopped on Eric Claptons tears in heaven video. it always gets me wondering how the man can sing a song dedicated to his dead son. the pain he must have felt when he sang it must have been so immense its amazing he got any words out. everytime i see the vid or hear the song i always feel a deep sorrow and admiration for him. being a dad myself i know i couldn't bear the pain if anything happened to one of my kids.
kudos to the man

These are my exact thoughts about this song, though I'm not a father (but an uncle )

I also have to add Eva Cassidy - Songbird (plus many others of her songs).
Does anyone of you know her? She died of cancer at young age, before she could become famous.

I'm not sure I would count Stairway as a lovesong or a ballad (in the traditional sense of english poetry). But almost any softer song done by led zeppelin is great. Ramble On, Ten Years Gone, Going to California, Thank You, What is and WHat Should Never Be. The list goes on.
