Will all Men's Hockey be played at GM Place? The day of the Preliminary Playoff Round (5th thru 12th seeds play - 2/23/10 is the date)- it says times are 12, 4:30, 7 and 9 pm PST- How are they going to play a game at 7- the 2nd game wont be over.

Some of the games are going to be played at the arena at the University of British Columbia. I don't know why they aren't playing the other games at Pacific Coliseum, considering it seats double that of the University, but then again I am probably overstating how many people want to see Belarus Vs. Latvia.

GM Place, home of the NHL's Vancouver Canucks, will play host to ice hockey events, but because corporate sponsorship is not allowed for an Olympic venue, it will be renamed Canada Hockey Place for the duration of the games. Renovations include the removal of advertising from the ice surface and conversion of some seating to accommodate the media.

Pulling the international games more tightly into the NHL regulations. Not sure I like that. It was fun to watch games on the international ice size (longer, quite a bit more room behind the goal).

It likely has to do with the size of the ice sheet - Olympics generally play on an international size (bigger than NHL).

This, however, is a total guess, as I can't currently find anything about it. I'll keep looking.

This year they are playing it on an NHL sized rink, probably because changing the ice size at GM wouldn't sit well with the Canucks (Their road trip would have to be way longer, I think).

Pacific Coliseum used to be the Canucks' home, so you'd think they'd play there. Maybe it caused schedule problems with the arena's tenants.

Russia, USA top IIHF Pre-Olympic World Rankings

With the start of the Olympic Hockey tournament just around the corner, the International Ice Hockey Federation released its final Pre-Olympic World Ranking report on Monday with Russia topping the men's side and the United States leading the women's standings.

Winners of the past two IIHF World Championship, Russia leads the men's standings with 2,925 points, just 20 points ahead of Canada at 2,905. Sweden sits third with 2,795 points.

Seems about right. For a second I thought they meant the US men's team was on top; nearly shit myself. However, I'm not surprised the woman's team is higher than Canada's. Canadians always seem to think that we will just win the woman's gold automatically because we won in 2002 and 2006. That's far from the truth; the Americans have a real shot to destroy all of our dreams and give Stephen Colbert some real gold for his show.

I read on TSN that Lindsey Vonn injured her ankle. It'd be terrible if she couldn't compete, especially given all the talk of her winning golds.

Will these games even happen? I keep seeing reports that there is snow up there. Hell, they should move the games to the American East coast! With all the snow they got lately?

I agree I like the olympic style of hockey a bit more than NHL style, particularly because of the olympic-size rink.

not too crazy about the winter olympics, but i look forward to seeing the "snow leopard" compete in the slalom, even though he's from ghana!
