The Most Beautiful Song Ever

I'm gonna be nitpicky and bitch about something that I noticed fairly often while I was reading the posts on this thread. As a music major it was always etched into my skull by my college professors that the difference between piece and song is that a song has words and a piece doesn't. So, under this criteria, "Fur Elise," pieces by Miles and Trane, Pachelbel's "Canon in D," and several others are NOT songs, they are pieces, and as such are not valid entries in this thread. I don't mean to be a dick, but this is a huge pet peeve that I have.

Also, Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" is only a part of a much, much bigger work called the 9th Symphony. To say that it is a work by itself is the same as saying that Michaelangelo's depiction of the creation in the Sistine Chapel is solely the part of the painting where God is giving man life with his finger; it is the culminating part of a much larger work, but it is not the entire work in and of itself. Actually, Beethoven never intended for his symphonies to be excerpted; he saw each of his symphonies as indivisible works. While the choral setting of Schiller's Ode to Joy is amazing by itself, it is electrifying when heard in the context of the symphony as the culminating part of a massive work. I get goosebumps every time I listen to the 9th and get to the chorale. Shit, I'm getting chills just sitting here thinking about it. :)

OK, this post has gotten long enough and I have way too many nominations to include here, so I'll just have to do so in another post.

Motion City Soundtrack - Let's Get Fucked Up and Die :D

I've been asked many times and I have an entire garage filled with beautiful lovesongs or harmonic melodies. It's hard to put a poll on this one but for me the vote goes for...

John Newton's legendary Amazing Grace
Prince – Purple Rain
John Lennon – Imagine
The Beatles – Let it be
Simon & Garfunkel – The Boxer, Bridge Over Troubled Water

I agree +
Massachussets - The Bee Gees
The River - Bruce Springsteen
Comfortable Numb - Pink Floyd
Private Investigations - Dire Straits

One - U2
Don't Go Away - Oasis
At My Most Beautiful - R.E.M.

There are too many to list in fairness, so I'll end there.

Nikki Benz: Simply the best #1!!
Wildest Dreams from Brother Firetribe

I want you to know
Been thinkin' about you since the day that we met
You really put on a show
There was something about the look in your eyes
You said that I'm the one
The one to make the best of this night
It was a hit and run
Showed no mercy, just took my head

It's so strange how time flies by
When someone comes and steals your heart
Watching the night turn into day
Wish I could turn the hands of time

refrain:
Girl, you make me feel so right
Got me running to the other side
You make me wanna wish this night would go on
Like only in my wildest dreams
The way you do me I just can't take
Don't you let my poor heart break
Shake me 'til I'm on my knees
Make me pray like only in
My wildest dreams

I've been pretty hooked on Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys as of late, particularly "That's Not Me."

That whole album is pretty gorgeous.

The two that come to mind for me are:

Unchained Melody by the Righteous Brothers

Dreams by the Cranberries

We've Only Just Begun-Carpenters
In The Ghetto-Elvis

Very hard question but a few that jump to mind:

Cowboys & Angels - George Michael
Ode to My Family - The Cranberries
Venus As A Boy - Bjork

Gypsie Rose Lee by the Distillers
and For Tonight You're Only Here to Know, also by the Distillers.
I love that girl's voice.
