Just in case anybody is interested (which they probably won't be)...
For those of you who had the pleasure (er, horror) of watching the Browns/Steelers game from this past Sunday, you will know what I'm talking about. For those of you who didn't, allow me to explain - the Browns were actually keeping it a close game for the most part and, late in the game, during a very, very crucial 4th down play, the refs made a HOOOOORRIBLE call. The Steelers went for it on 4th and short, in Browns territory, and came up short. It should've been the Browns ball, BUT...well, I could explain the call, but you can just watch it here, as seeing it on video is the only way to do this blown call it's true justice.
WHAT?!?!?!
The video doesn't show anything much, except for the spot of the ball and the measurement of the chain. Well, the refs originally signaled that the Steelers were short, but after about 30 seconds, the Steelers offense came back onto the field and ran a play. The announcers were like, "WHAT IS GOING ON?" and the game continued. So, even though they signaled that the Steelers didn't make it and that it was the Browns' ball, they still...got...the...1st down? :dunno:
Anyway, on today's local news, they had a few reports on the issue. According to the NFL, the refs made the correct call, as the Steelers had a first down. Why did it look like they were short on the video then, you ask? Well, also according to the NFL, it was an OPTICAL ILLUSION. Yes, an OPTICAL ILLUSION.
And, they interviewed a member of the chain gang (the guy who personally held the first down marker side) and he said that the ball was clearly BEHIND the marker, AKA - not a first down.
If you were watching the game, you would agree that the blown call was a total momentum changer and gave Pittsburgh 3 free points, which definitely helped Pittsburgh win that game. I know the Browns are bad, but, to phrase Keyshawn Johnson...
C'MON MAAAAAN!!!
...give 'em a fucking break.
