Canada won gold in ice dance. I have no idea what the difference is between it and figure skating, but its a gold.

During an interview with TSN, the American team who placed silver interupted the interview so they could congratulate the winners. That was nice to see; a bunch of friends celebrating their victories. It was one of the highlights of these games for me.

They just don't do jumps and shit like that, as far as I know.

The difference between ice dance and pairs figure skating is that there are no above the shoulder lifts, and no jumps in ice dance and the footwork and spin requirements are different. Ice dance relies heavily on artistic merit, where pairs figure skating relies more on technical merit. Hope that answered your question :)

and seriously bigtime WOOOOO for Canada right now! I have family that live where the gold medalists are from and I spent six years living there going to school and let me tell you, the whole freaking town and city are celebrating. Saw my famjam on tv, they're partying it up bigtime!!!! :D:D:D GO CANADA!!!!

We've got nine so far, three of each color. Don't think we'll match 23 from Torino 2006, but there still are some chances like Alpine skiing, Biathlon (team) and Nordic Combined (team), but that's about it.

Just heard on Mike and Mike on ESPN Bettman does'nt want NHL players to play in the olympics anymore. So in four years there might not be any NHLers playing in Russia. This is news to me.

He's been against it for a while now. I'm sure the NHLPA will have something to say about that though. Not allowing players to play for their country might convince many European and Russian players to stay home and play in the Swedish Elite League and KHL.

Luongo will be playing net for Canada against Germany. 6-1.

If that happens there won't be any hockey in Sotchi. The IOC wants the best athletes competing at the Olympics. Football being the only exception on account of FIFA's power.
They scrapped baseball because it was lame sans MLB players.

"Lame" is also a good word to summarize yesterday. What else can you say about a day whose highlight was Petter Northug?

So the concensus now among you Canucks is that Brodeur is washed up? :)

The NHL is in a tough position. The IIHL wants it, and probably most importantly, many of the best Russian players say they will go regardless of what the NHL says. Ovechkin, Malkin and (I think) Kovalchuck have all said Russia comes before their NHL teams.

When the NHL owners are paying some of their players eight figures, of course they don't want them playing in the olympics.

^ Huh, money kills another sports highlight? Welcome to the new world!

Someone compared this to football, but that's apples and oranges since football has the World Cup which is played every four years and which is THE ultimate competition in that sport. Icehockey's biggest international competiton is the Olympic tournament, and if Bettman thinks he really can ban all NHL players to compete there he will severely cut his own flesh, because all the Russians, Swedes, Fins, Germans, etc, will take this any time over their NHL career. And you can earn very good money outside of North America these days playing hockey.

Just look how much the Canadians are throwing their weight around tonight. It's a wonder guys don't get injured more often in these competitions because it means so much to them. There's been some really big hits tonight.

I don't know if I'd go as far as to say they would give up their Ferrari's, multi million dollar mansions, the beautiful women. On the other hand, if you ask any of the NHLers, I'd bet that the majority would in fact rather have a gold medal than their name on the Stanley Cup. I'd rather have a gold medal, because think about it it's only every four years and it's a brotherhood, a famliy between the players. :2 cents:

Canada just pushed them around tonight. There were two differences - 1. the lines were clicking. The passing was tighter and they were not doing too much passing. They went to the net more. and 2. Luongo. Don't fricking start Brodeur again, I'd say.

Also, did you see Kramar's disqualification? His coach should get kicked in the nuts a few times. Really bad for the athlete who did the work and actually won, but for a bad call/decision by the coach. :(

Wouldn't have Kramar known which lane he was supposed to be in? Usually they go inner/outer/inner/outer, don't they? I'm not sure how he messed that up.

I hate the response from the Korean guy who won it. Fuck you, buddy. You know that you are second.

He didn't mess it up. He was going to the right spot, but his coach was on the sideline with an arrow drawn, screaming that he was wrong and he had to get over. He hopped over last second. You listen to the coach, they're pretty much always right. Not this time.
