It's difficult to say b/c recruiting starts almost immediately after the bowl games. You don't want to be looking for a coach during that time. At the same time, interim coaches aren't the way to go unless you plan to consider them for the job.

I don't know if I like the choice, but what you said is correct in a lot of ways. Bringing in money and winning are the most important parts of nearly every college program and any semblance of integrity is a secondary or tertiary concern.

Recruiting at all schools is a yearly machine...a coach at a huge program like Meat or USC, or notre dork, or Florida State must be in place at all times really..I think it's bad if a coach sticks around his "old school." When the coach pulls the exit lever...he needs to go immediately..imo.

I think West Virginia should look at Mike Singletary, Bob Davie or Terry Bowden. West Virginia is not a "joke" program. I think Rodriguez wanted to coach "big boy old school football." I guess he didn't want to try to build WVU into a blueblood program.

For everyone:
Should colleges wait until the bowl games and post-season tournaments to hire new coaches, that way any teams that are in said games do not suffer with interim coaches?

No, that way you can get a coach in to finish up the recruiting before the "Dead Period" and get a staff together.

That's what Arkansas is doing now. Petrino is putting his staff together and tackling recruiting (he just picked up a blue-chip quarterback that had verbally committed to Tulsa), while the remaining staff is getting the team ready for the Cotton Bowl. That way, there's not too many distractions going around.

Michigan hired away West Virginia's basketball coach, now football coach...and it was announced that Michigan hired WVU's Women's Soccer coach...ouch! West Virginia..stop letting Meatchicken treat you like a Coaches Costco!!

I hope I didn't overstep a mod's job, but I already made one for the guys in the thread a couple of weeks ago!

No "over step" at all

I've been away the past couple of weeks and have not kept up with the thread, so my apologies.

Way to stay one (or two) steps ahead, The Satyr Icon

Looks like Slick Rick Neuheisel is about to be named new head coach of ucla...this is the correct hire, for those turds, in my opinion. He is a quality coach and an alumnus.

Bowl Game scorecard!

Poinsettia Bowl:
Utah 35, Navy 32
I thought that The Midshipmen would continue their great year, but the Utes were too much!

New Orleans Bowl
Florida Atlantic 44, Memphis 27
Did anyone pick the Owls? They came out and slapped points the Tigers fast and ran away with the game.

Papajohns Bowl
Cincinnati 31, Southern Miss 21
Sorry CptHa, but the Bearcats' passing attack was amazing!

New Mexico Bowl
New Mexico 23, Nevada 0
Lobos win pretty easily with their QB going for 354 yards.

Las Vega Bowl

BYU 17, UCLA 16
Tight game! I really thought that the Bruins were going to win, but that block was truly a gamesaver.

Hawaii Bowl

East Carolina 41, Boise State 38
Another awesome game. I was shocked when the Pirates jumped the Broncos so easily...but the Broncos came back, only to lose by a FG.

Only if you call throwing three picks in a lopsided offense amazing. It was better than what i expected it to be. But eventually it was the same old thing.

You are all looking live at the LEADER of the 2008 Freeones College Bowl Pick'em!

That BC game looked shaky but it turned positive for me at the end...Now if Oregon State will win and get the goddamn Pac10 a W I will be looookin good..

I'm shocked that the Pac10 has looked bad so far. I thought ASU would give Texas a game at least...they got humiliated last night. ucla played typical bruin bowl ball (L)...Looks like the credibility of the Conference will rest on the Mighty Trojans shoulders??:dunno:

Don't worry, i know how you feel TR. My team had to do the same thing last year.

I'm a Pac10 Honk first and foremost...but I have to admit my Conference has looked very weak thus far...I'm happy Oregon State held on for the win.

Tommorrow's Connecticut/Wake Forest game could be another thriller/last second FG type game...

The last few years yes, though how fair that is this year I'm not sure as you're talking about a team with an offense decimated by injuries.

Not sure why they haven't hired Neuheisel already, except that he obviously wasn't (isn't) their AD's (and/or chancellor's) preference. Plus "the word" is that they're waiting to interview June Jones until after Hawaii's bowl game. Screw that. Jones is not the best hire for UCLA. Neuheisel is.

Considering their dicey past, Terry Donahue gave Neuheisel a stronger than expected endorsement tonight, while at the same time hedgeing somewhat. Then again it's not like anybody at UCLA should care what that pussy has to say. He was elemental in fostering a mentality of underachievement there with fatalistic convictions like: "USC is the football school, UCLA is the basketball school, we all know that. But UCLA is still a great institution that can get great players from across the country." Piss off Donahue; you loser.

Looks like the credibility of the Conference will rest on the Mighty Trojans shoulders??:dunno:

:dunno:
The overwhelming preseason choice to win it all, they find themselves in very much a second tier bowl matchup where I doubt a vicory over Illinois is going to do a whole lot for them being considered "mighty".

Bowl Game scorecard Part Deux: Electric Bugaloo

MOTOR CITY
Purdue 51, Central Michigan 48
What a game! Boilermakers almost choke the game away, wasting their QB's 546 yards passing AND 28 point lead, but win with last-second FG.

HOLIDAY
Texas 52, Arizona State 34
The Sun Devils just looked outclassed by Longhorns in all facets of the game.

CHAMPS SPORTS

Boston College 24, Michigan State 21
Slugfest! In the end, it was Eagles taking advantage of all the Spartan turnovers.

TEXAS
TCU 20, Houston 13
Only bowl game I didn't see.... what network was this game on?

EMERALD
Oregon State 21, Maryland 14
The Beavers won ugly, and finally put a win in the Pac 10's bowl season.

MEINEKE CAR CARE
Wake Forest 24, UConn 10
The Demon Deacons control the second half and win it!

LIBERTY
Mississippi State 10, Central Florida 3
Total defensive game, and after watching some scorefests, it was fun to see.

ALAMO
Penn State 24, Texas A&M 17
It's like clockwork each season: JoePa and the Nittany Lions win a bowl game.

I'm doing awful in the Bowl Pick'em, mostly cuz I am going out on a limb with My picks!

Finally UCLA hires Rick Neuheisel, which I hope turns out to be the best for both of them: National Championships without scandals!

It was on NFL Network on Friday night. Insight Bowl (Indiana/Oklahoma State) tomorrow evening is on NFL Network as well. :2 cents:

And YAY NITTANY LIONS! :nanner:
