2010 Tennis Thread (Grand Slams, ATP World Tour, Davis Cup)

I used to hate Lendl and lurve Johnny Mac. Agassi, Courier and Sampras were okay. Becker was awesome.

Now, upon reflection, I really miss Lendl. He was such a great player and villain. I would like the American tennis fan world to  to the greatness that was Lendl. I think American Fan turned Lendl against the sport. We need him back as a commentator, imo.

I agree with Bloody, the only shitty part of the sport today is the serving. It's too much of an advantage today due to the racquet tech. The pace of the action is too fast. The serve-n-volley tactic has been rendered obsolete :(

If we could somehow limit the power of the racquets so that strategy and technique get back into the game, that would be best.

I don't really miss the old stars because Rafa, Feds, Monfils, Isner, Verdasco, are amazing to watch.

We need new American ladies though...the Williams sisters are about finished :(

Who can forget Wimby '08. Greatest. Match. EVAH

Re: ATP history...

Today's players are boring. It's not much fun watching men's tennis today.
Federer: Great player. I like him
Nadal: boring fag
Blake: spirited, cool, but loses too often
the rest: Yawn!

Where are the cool cats of yore? I loved men's tennis when there were real characters like Ivanisevic, Rafter, Rios, Tarango, Ilie, Sampras, even a lousy cheat like Bruguera. The ATP has streamlined its personnel. That's what has made men's tennis redundant.

The last guy I did really enjoy was Max Mirnyi. Well, I'm getting old...

disagree. Venus rise to no.2 next week.
and Serena is still a winner.

Oudin should be their next best thing.

no one.

the best of them all, indeed.

I still remember how excited i was in the tiebreaks and the fifth set... a fuckin' rollercoaster.

Federer reaches Madrid semifinals

http://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/sport/Federer_reaches_Madrid_semifinals.html?cid=8883460

Swiss tennis star Roger Federer has beaten Latvian Ernests Gulbis 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the quarterfinals of the Madrid Masters.

;)

good for Roger: avenge his last week defeat and recover from a set down. Next, Murray or Ferrer.
The other SF is a no-brainer: Nadal-Almagro
upset, anyone? nah...

but wait, if Nico serve good, he might get a chance. Slim, but a chance in the end.

Gulbis and Kohlschreiber (spelling) are really fun to watch. Even Donald Young was fun to watch (even though he sucked) when he first came out. There are just far too many to mention in today's game I enjoy watching. Still a huge fan of Roddick though. :hatsoff:

ATP 250 of Nice (France) draw is out.

projected QFs:
soderling-montañés
monfils-berrer
---------------
belluci-baghdatis
verdasco-kubot

it would be probably a verdasco-soderling issue.

Boy oh boy you missed some GREAT tennis IMO. The players you mention played some great tennis and there were tremendous match ups but nothing on the order of what it was in the 80's.

I missed the 80's as well, but Federer/Nadal is some of the most intense competition I've ever seen. In any sport. I'll remember Wimbledon '08 for the rest of my life.

FINALLY!!!!

Federer-Nadal will play in the Madrid Open tomorrow.

After exactly one year, the two most gifted tennis players of the last decades face each other. THANKS, TENNIS GODS! ;)

Roger beat Ferrer and Rafa beat Almagro, both in three sets.

Roger is playing great again and Rafa isn't that impressive as he was in Montecarlo and good part of Rome. It can fall in anyone side.

* cough, go roger, cough *

I quoted this post in its entirety because it's so shitty

Greg....Greg...you think Sampras was cool? SERIOUSLY

Rafa beat Fed. Yay. I didnt see the match. Un-yay

Rafa beat Fed. Un-yay :(
I DID see the match. Yay!

it was really kinda annoying: Rafa wasn't at his best, but Roger wasn't able to convert his numerous break-points (as usual in matches against Rafa).
so... what i'm saying is that Roger should've won this one, but this one proofs that he still has Rafa in his head... i hope in the upcoming Roger-Rafa Roland Garros final (i'm sure there will be a reality!) he overcome that.

On behalf on the Royal Philological Society of California , I apologize if I haven't precisely distinguished between "cool" and "worshippable". While Sampras wasn't exactly "cool", he was the embodiment of tennis perfection, and I feel blessed that he gave me his autograph.

The Australian Open match between Sampras and Courier (I believe it was 1992) was the best match I've ever seen in men's tennis. And even if it wasn't, Pete Perfect was more of a character than everybody of the indistingiuishable lameducks on the tour nowadays.

Since Pironkova's win over Wozniak has won me quite a bit of dough today, I forgive you titsrock. :lovecoupl

indistingiuishable ?

right...

Roger Federer is indistingiuishable...

Rafael Nadal is indistingiuishable...

you GOTTA admit that at least those two aren't that, mate...

And Kolya, Feña, Roddick ?
they're all the same shit, right ?

if you don't, sorry to say, but you don't know sh** about men's tennis.

:2 cents:
