2009 TENNIS Thread (Grand Slams, Tourneys, Davis Cup)

...and let's bring some (sexy) elegance back into the game: for the women's game;)

I think Wimbledon is Federer's second home, but Nadal wants a revenge after losing Roland Garros at an early stage.
Djokovic and Murray want to show their skills too.
Wimbledon 2009 could be very interesting.

THis may be the one and only time I ever use the NYPost:)eek:) as a source so, wackoes, pay attention...

It appears 35yr old Tennis Hall of Famer Monica Seles (last seen getting clowned on "Dancing with the Stars") is *canoodling* with the 67 yr old owner of the Buffalo Sabres, Tom Golisano:eek: Mr. Golisano is a typical upstate New York Republican businessman douchebag who is, of course, "thrice divorced."

Couldn't she do better than this guy???:weeping::sleep::dunno:

Good Grief Monica Seles!

what a nice thread!

BUT... more than 4 months without a post! c'mon now...

ok, let's recapitulate from July:

- Federer won Wimbledon (yay!!!) and got back his No. 1 spot
- Roddick lost Wimbledon in a heart-breaking match (16-14 in the fifth, ARE YOU KIDDING ME?)
- Murray won in Canada (this guy can play in hardcourts)
- Federer won in Cincy (beat Djokovic and Murray on his way... "i'm the no. 1 guys!")
- Del Potro surprise everybody (well, not THAT much, the guy can play) and beat the super-favorite Roger Federer in 5 sets in the final. This time there was no tears from Roger, but a lot of tears from the Argentinean... can't blame him, right? (remember Roger crying out loud in Wimbledon in 2003... classic)
- Nadal got injured (again!), this time in his abs.
- Tsonga won the ATP 500 in Tokyo
- Djokovic won the ATP 500 in Beijing. This isn't enough for him: since the Masters Cup last November, he wasn't be able of winning any major tournament (that is: Grand Slam and Masters 1000). a disapointing season for him (despite the fact that he's reached 4 masters 1000 finals... losing to Murray, Nadal, Nadal, and Federer)
- Serena Williams got back her No. 1 spot. As she claims: "i'm the REAL no. 1" (take that, Dinara!)
- Davydenko won the Masters 1000 in Shanghai. Good for "Kolya", i really like him. Pretty humble, strong, focused.
- Nadal is now 6 months without a title! ANY title. Unbelivable. And the worst of all ? he can't win the top players since his return, so, the remaining 2 tournaments he has (Paris-Bercy and Masters Cup) doesn't look so good. It will be then EIGHT (pufff!) months without a title. Too damn much. Good for Roger, Andy, Novak and Juan Martin.

so... this week the tour is in Moscow (Davydenko should won that) and Stockholm (Soderling should won)

Youzhny won the Moscow tournament (6th consecutive year that locals win)
let's remember that he was 8th in the word back in 2006.

Baghdatis won in Stockholm (yeah, Badghdatis)
A lot of us tought that this guy was pretty much done. But waddayaknow... good for him.

poor Safina... got injured and had to retire from the WTA Year End Championship.

so... the "real" No. 1 will arise again to the top spot
Serena rules!!

by the way: Serena, without taking Grand Slams in account, has been in a terrible slump... more than a year without a title.
she deserves the top spot ?

I think the Williams sisters only really care about the grand slams. Otherwise they are playing tournaments more because they have to

Ljubicic won the ATP 250 in Lyon (his 9th total, 1st in more than 2 years)

Jurgen Melzer won the ATP 250 in Vienna (his 2nd total, 1st in more than 3 years)

Sergiy Stakhovsky won the ATP 250 in St. Petersburg (his 2nd total, 1st in 18 months)

Serena Williams won the WTA Tour Championship (the equivalent to the ATP Masters Cup) for the 2nd time in her career.

this week there are two ATP 500 tournaments: Basel and Valencia. In Basel, Federer or Djokovic should win, and in Valencia, Murray or Davydenko.
Nadal and Del Potro are resting for the next-week Masters 1000 in Paris Bercy.

Djokovic won the ATP 500 in Basel, defeating Roger Federer himself

and Murray made his winner comeback in the ATP 500 in Valencia, defeating Youzhny in the final

this week is going on the Paris-Bercy Masters 1000. My guess is that Djokovic or Murray should win.

yep. Djokovic won that in an outstanding match against the local man, Monfils. It's the second time in a row that Nole beat the local man (Federer in Basel, a few days ago)... what's next? beating Murray in London next week? it's not impossible, you know...

This is his first major title in a year! (too much for someone of his level) and now he's the favorite to win the Masters Cup. Besides Nole, i would say Federer could also won that one. It all starts this sunday.

And Nadal, despite the fact that now he's closer to Federer's No. 1 spot, remains in a slump with no titles (not even an ATP 250!) since beggining of May. To his favor, it should be noted that he beat a top-10: Tsonga. It's his first win over a top-10 since May, so, it's an improvement, but not enough for someone like him (15 masters, 6 slams, etc...) if you're a Nadal, fan, you must be worried.

the Masters Cup groups are:
Federer, Murray, Del Potro, Verdasco

in this one, Federer got the easiest possible draw: Verdasco is clearly the weakest player in the tournament, Del Potro were injured only a week ago, and Murray show signs of fatigue last week in Paris. My pick is Federer and Murray.

Nadal, Djokovic, Davydenko, Soderling

ouch! Nadal fans must be scared... Djokovic is The Man this past month (has won 3 of the last four tournaments he played, including a Masters 1000, including beating Federer and Nadal in consecutive weeks), Davydenko is also hot (won in Shanghai OVER Nadal) and Soderling is Nadal's boogeyman.
Honestly, i don't think Nadal can past the round robin this time. My pick is Djokovic and Davydenko.

so, the semifinals would be Federer-Davydenko and Murray-Djokovic. Bet on Fed and Nole. So, it's once again, Federer and Djokovic... but this time Federer is with blood in his eye and Nole would be pretty tired (that would be his 15th match in over 20 days), so, Federer will won his 5th Masters Cup (he already won in 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007)

any opinions on this ?
i'm feeling lonely in this thread... (8 of last 9 post are mine)

What happened with USA in the Davis Cup? Anyone know?

they defeat Switzerland in the 1st round (World Group, of course) but lose to Croatia in 2nd round (with a disapointing performance of James Blake).

Andy Roddick didn't play in the 2nd round.

And if you're talking about the girls, Fed Cup, USA lose the final against Italy (neither of the Williams sisters played)

thanks for your post! :wave2:
at last someone interested in tennis!

What happened with USA in the Davis Cup? Anyone know?

The simple answer is that we don't have any American Men who are worth anything on the global tennis stage? All our great players have long retired...Roddick and Blake are 2 of the most overrated tennis stars ever. They really are nothing but marketing hype.

We also don't have any decent American women other than the Williams sisters and they aren't reliable competitors anymore. They barely get motivated to play in Slams these days...:dunno:

We have more younger women prospects than male prospects. But some of our women prospects, like Ashley Harkleroad, are more interested in partying and advertising than actually winning anything...:dunno:
