2010 Olympics in Vancouver thread

Its not quantity that matters, its QUALITY.

Talk all the shit you want about the medals you won, but WE won the most gold...thats all that matters. You didn't win because you had only 9 gold medals. Silver and bronze are still losses. No one goes to the Games to win bronze, or silver...they go to win Gold. And we did just that. :D

So, you're saying that Canada won just because they have the most Gold Medals? Even though the official standings of the Olympics (which goes by overall medal count by the way) has the United States as the top country?

Congratulations on the hockey game, congratulations on the Gold Medals...but the USA outperformed everybody.

PS - Your own country's slogan this year was "Own The Podium". And, if you notice, the podium has 3 spots on it...Gold, Silver and Bronze.

I don't know. A medal of any kind is quite a damn achievement. Maybe after you've invested $$$ and time like these people have you would understand what it takes. It's almost a full time job between every four years for these people. I knew someone who trained for track and they have to literally treat it like a job.

I know exactly what it takes. I wasn't able to keep training in figure skating because my parents couldn't afford the thousands it cost each year...I was 15 when I stopped skating and I can only imagine where I'd be today if I had been able to continue living the dream.

But if I had been there, and able to compete, I'd go to the games with gold in my eyes. You gotta keep your eyes on the prize, otherwise you'll wind up not achieving it. Sure Silver or bronze is better than 4th or 5th or 20th...but its not what you came there for. When you invest all of your life in something, you work towards being the best. Anything less isn't good enough. Maybe I'm too harsh, but thats the reality of the Olympics. Go for the gold!

Thank god its done , now we can get back to real sports like football & the build up to the World Cup , it didnt half drag on , theres only so many time you can watch people sliding down a hill before it gets boring , the hockey and the luge were the best though

I don't think the skier from Ghana went to Vancouver to win gold. He finished 47th out of 102. Good for him.

When you've won world cup events or had top finishes in World Championships, you can realistically aim for gold. But that's a minority of the athletes. A bronze alone secures your place in the history books forever. Especially when you're from a smaller country.

The Jamaican bobsleigh team of '88 didn't even need a top ten finish.

I wish to slap you in the face with my balls.

I heart Olympics. I could watch people sliding for another month. I wish more of these sports were covered regularly.

Yeah, be sure and tell those "other medalists" that they're failures. Winning a medal, regardless of color, is the highest honor any athlete can have. Every one absolutely aims to win the gold, but there were 172 medalists who are going home with hardware who deserve to be applauded for their efforts. Regardless if they weren't the best, they still earned the right to represent their country and stand on the podium. It doesn't get any better than that.

From Cool Runnings:
"Hey, it doesn't matter tomorrow if they come in first or fiftieth. Those guys have earned the right to walk into that stadium and wave their nation's flag. That's the single greatest honor an athlete can ever have. That's what the Olympics are all about."

Whatever dude. We broke a world record, just like you did. Our canadian team won more competitions than any other country, and thats something to be super proud of. I don't care about how many overall medals anyone else got - we excelled, and on our own home soil. We may not own the podium but we own the gold. :)

Hmm, I'm willing to bet that you wouldn't be saying this if the roles were reversed. If the USA had 14 Golds but had less overall medals, you'd probably be claiming that all that matters is winning the most medals.

Isn't this fun?

Thank God...

I'm in Vancouver....and you never know how we'll react ;)

Be sure to relay to whoever the hell it is up there who lobbied the IOC to have the rinks for the hockey games changed from International to standard that that wasn't very cool. I have to imagine that was an advantage for the Canadians. :D

no, actually, I wouldn't. Gold is what matters. Canada could have 100 medals total but if ANY country had more gold, I'd tip my hats to them.

Country's achievement. Unless you're claiming multiple countries of course. And if you are, that's not fair. :hatsoff:

The best teams consisted of NHL players so they should have no problem with the smaller ice. To think if they played on the international ice maybe Norway would have taken it all. In reality though they didn't change the ice because it would have cost millions to do it as you're essentially taking rows of seats out.

I enjoy the game a little more when it's on that wider sheet. Would it have decided it differently? Maybe. Most likely not. I just think that this being the first time in some time (I am not sure the last time or if there ever was another time) just is stupid. The game is a lot more wide open and more fun as well on olympic size ice.
