recommend any good horror flicks?

i'd consider shaun to be horror, despite that you think zombie movies are comedies like I think fox news is comedy, it's still horror (zombie movies that is, but you could say the same for fox news.) the reason is that the zombies are taken seriously in the film, just not by the characters in it. the humor of the movie comes from the fact that these guys are in a horror movie but they are acting just as the way that normal people would in real life, not like people who are in a horror movie. and there are also serious parts of the movie.

it's like the movie army of darkness. that movie is very slapstick and full of funny parts and over the top so as it's not scary at all and not intended to be. but I consider it horror nonetheless because it's primary setting and plot are horror, even if it has humor.

I wouldn't consider the Scary Movies to be horror because theire whole point is to be a comedy and the only reason that they have any horror is because they are making fun of horror movies.

It just depends on the movie. I think there's a difference between a horror movie that has comedy in it and a comedy that has horror in it. But everyone might not agree with me on that one.

But just as Scary Movie is a spoof of horror films. Shaun of the Dead was made as a spoof of zombie films. So if one is a comedy so is the other. As if one isn't a horror neither is the other

Back to the zombies though. I've got 25 of them sat in my DVD/video collection. As I am something of a horror fan with over 400 horror films alone. But they aren't actually in my horror collection for the reason that they make me laugh. They are between the comedies and horror (and that's the only time you'll see me put these two together :1orglaugh ). I've got all the so called major zombie movies Night of the Living Dead, Day of the Dead, etc. But none of these have scared anybody except a kid. Everyone just laughs at the zombies, especially the fact they move so slow and would never be able to catch someone walking, never mind running. Plus you'd have took their head off before they even did get close enough to bite you.
I think that the zombie genre is fascinating, but that especially the movies often miss the fascinating part of it. As you say, a slow zombie isn't scary on it's own. You can outrun it or just hit it in the head with a hammer. Although that's another part of the appeal of the zombie genre IMO; the zombies can be killed by a regular person with a common tool, instead of how many monsters in movies can only be dispatched by a hero with some magical or very powerful weapon. Zombies as a scare will only work if it's a dark scene, and they suddenly appear out of nowhere, but that's really not something to do with the zombies, but more about the surprise moment. (Okay fast zombies and the infected in 28 days later are different and can be scary, but I prefer the slow ones)

What is "scary" about zombies, is the fact that they don't feel pain, they don't have to sleep, and there are so many of them. They won't stop, they can't be threatened or pursuaded to stay away, but will continue to pursue the living survivors, who will have to struggle to find safety and supplies. That's what I have always viewed as the essential part of a good zombie story. The "scare" is a prolonged feeling of hopelessness and despair, in a world where civilization doesn't exist anymore, and everywhere there are endless hordes of hungry corpses.

At least that's what I think of the zombie genre. :)

I thought "White Noise" was good,im not a huge fan of gore films as such,I prefer the,for want of a better word, smarter horror films like "Signs" and "Sixth Sense",having said the "Resident Evil" kicked ass!!

i think Paul Anderson should stop making movies. He has made films like Mortal Kombat, Resident evil 1 and 2, AVP, and other sorry-ass movies. He just does not know when to stop.

He takes a good idea and completely botches it in his movies. Resident evil is suppose to be a survival horror story but in resident evil 2, he turns it into a crappy action movie

Well, the thread was suppose to be recommendations of SCARY movies, but now it looks like its recommendations of any horror movie, so here are my recommendations without including the obvious ones like Halloween, TCM, ...:

Cannibal Holocaust
The Beyond
City Of The Living Dead
Deep Red
Suspiria
Tenebrae
Phenomena
Braindead
Cemetary Man
Let Sleeping Corpses Lie
Beyond The Darkness
The Descent
The Hills Have Eyes(original and remake)
The Changeling
Re-Animator
Return Of The Living Dead 1,2 and 3
Night, Dawn, Day and Land Of The Dead
Session 9
The Eye
Evil Dead Trap
A Tale Of Two Sisters
Hellraiser 1 and 2
Phantasm
Night Of The Demons
Demons
Versus
Ichi The Killer
The Last House On The Left
...

Agreed! If the Resident Evil movies were actually based on the games they would have been awesome, but instead they are shit!

Actually....No it wasnt made as a spoof of zombie films, it was made as a funny zombie movie, but not funny in a cheesy way like Scary Movie... Funny in a realistic way.

That's why I said that zombies movies focus more on violence and gore than on scares...If you want scary movies, watch ghost movies... Zombie movie are not scary because its unrealistic...Its impossible, but ghost movies...Who know if ghosts exist or not? That's why its scary.

I'm probably one of the only people who thinks The Blair Witch project is not only scary, but a damn good film.
Agreed. Its one of these movies that are scary because of the sound effects, the realism and the fact that they take place in the middle of nowhere(in a forest, in this case.).

The most horrible movie that isn't really intended to be a horror flick is IMO Salò

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073650/

Two hours of torture, rape and humiliation without the slightest touch of mercy. I'm usually not easy to scare, but this one really got to me the first time I watched it. The coprophagia scenes are a challenge! A perfect 10!

The most disturbing thing about it is, that it merely shows what happens when humans have absolute power over others: The dark corners of the human soul.

I just ordered this movie a couple days ago...I'm really interested to see it, people consider it like the most shocking movie ever made and I really want to see a shocking movie!

I guess this movie is not 'scary'...Its mostly very disturbing.

I also ordered Men Behind The Sun...I heard this one is the second most disturbing movie ever!

Anyway, is Salo any 'good'? I'm sure its not enjoyable, but is it good for what its suppose to be? I heard somewhere that there's some pretty gory scenes and somewhere else that most of the gore scenes are off screen...Which one is true?

I haven't seen Salo' yet, but I've heard about it. I just don't want to spend $800 to get a copy. Supposedly, Criterion is re-releasing a new remastered edition sometime this year.

Another one to see for shock value alone is Irreversable. It's not exactly horror (although it is quite scary), but it's extremely unsettling to say the least. There are really only 2 scenes that are hard to take, but they are very difficult to watch. I've got a pretty big tolerance when it comes to violence and or gore in movies, but that one really threw me for a loop.

I also want to see Irreversible and I'll probably get it soon!

You can get some Salo DVDs for less than 20$ on eBay.(not the Criterion DVD, but some other DVDs released by some other companies)...

You can get the Criterion version for like 80$ minimum, tough...

Men Behind The Sun was just kind of stupid. The special effects weren't that good, and the only shocking parts were that they killed a live animal, and showed footage of a real autopsy. Kind of like Canibal Holocaust, it was shocking to be shocking and lacked a good story.

But did you know that it was based on real acts commited by the japanese during World War II? What you see in the movie really happened!

That's the word for it!

It is disturbing, because it's real. No monsters, zombies, aliens that go after people. The bad guys are ordinary men (like you and me - even if we don't like to admit it)

It's a parable about totalitarianism. A vivid reminder of atrocities committed throughout human history. When Pasolini shot that film, we witnessed the same kind of torture in Chile and Argentina.

So, it's not only a film. Even though it's highly stylized (and based on a 17th century novel by Marquis de Sade), it's rooted in reality.

I was disappointed by Men Behind the Sun. A rather boring exercise in the tradition of Ilsa, She-Wolf of the SS and its sequels.

The guy imploding in the decompression chamber is quite amusing to watch. No spoilers, here! But all in all, I'd only rate it 5 out of 10. See for yourself!

Salò is amongst my Top 100 of all time - probably Top 10, even!

It caters perfectly to its intention: To depict the wolfish nature of man. Pasolini had witnessed German and Italian atrocities first-hand during World War II (I think, his brother was a victim). So he certainly knows, what he's talking about.

The film is (in the uncut version; I own the version edited by the British Film Institute) very graphic in its depiction of coprophagia, anal rape, the infliction of physical and psychical wounds. The gory bits come at the end (No spoilers, again!) and from a technical perspective they're not perfect, but fit perfectly into the whole framework.

Most disturbung of all: The movie ends after 120 minutes of constant brutality on a very tender note; a short glimpse of irony to leave us completely bewildered.

I don't think i would want to see a disturbing film like Salo. I heard that it is about molesting boys. That is just gross.
