How patriotic are you?

I'm a disgruntled patriot I guess...shit had better change, and change soon...and I mean ACTUALLY change...

Good debate in this thread about Nationalism...it's a slippery slope...I'm all for being proud of where you come from, your heritage, your culture, your history...but "nationalism" can be revved up into a fervor with devastating results.

But, hell yeah, I'm proud to be an American. Just not happy with the state of affairs as they sit right now.

I definitely see your point about nationalism... although, in the US we are so divided along "partisan/ideological" lines, seemingly on a cellular or even genetic level these days, that I seriously doubt our ability to agree enough on something as big as say, revolution, to muster the necessary, collective fervor to be able to accomplish anything too devastating.

That, and we are as apathetic and as lazy a country as they come these days when you get down to it.

As far as allegiance? It goes:

1. My city first and foremost.
2. My State - the best state in the Union
3. My country
4. Canada (seriously looking more and more attractive the way America is going with all the illegals and that socialist Obama running it into the ground).
5. All the European countries of my ancestors

Yeah, something along those lines. :2 cents:

I love how its acceptable for people from any country other than the US to give their honest appraisal that there are too many foreigners in their country, and I'm being completely sincere when I say that I'm envious of Europeans' ability to give honest opinions about immigration and national pride without being derided as racist or xenophobic.

I have never seen a European get berated even 1/8 as badly as an American would for saying something like that. Apparently its OK to be patriotic and have a distaste for foreigners, just as long as your DON'T live in America.

This country... *sigh.*

Agreed. The reason there will never be a revolution in this country is because that it would require people to come together as a whole, as one entity fighting against the perceived injustices perpetrated by the ruling elite...we are a country of narcissists...it will never happen.

Nationalism scares me on a historical front...one could argue that genocide and ethnic cleansing is a direct consequence of "revved" up nationalism.

me and millions of others get by just fine without feeling the need to become joiners and followers

It's only a 'need' if you are someone who has an irrational fear of difference or think you are superior to others. Joining a group is just an attempt to feel less insecure.

Give me a break... being an American anti-nationalist, or anti-patriot these days is more akin to group-think than the opposite, to the point where its becoming cliche. Anti-nationalism, anti-patriotism and the "Un-Proud To Be American Club" all have their own Facebook pages for Christ's sake.

There is not much that makes me proud of my country. Politics, job market, our educational and health care system

At least we have some big beautiful cities, nature and of course the frauleins  !

so im supposed to say fuck you to my country, and give credit to everything thats been done throughout the centuries to mankind overall? thats bullshit.

im supposed to be happy about everyone around me as a whole, instead of being proud of my countrymen and what the previous generations have accomplished to give me what i have today? just mash it all into one thing, and say that the whole world has worked together to produce it? yea, cause africas really done something for me or my family. or the alaskin natives, or various other groups around the world

no no no. thats not right at all

Patriotic enough to have served in the USAF for eight years.
Patriotic to my state - I'm a Native Texan and damn proud of it.
I have a tattoo of an eagle (for USA), backed by a Texas flag on my chest.
I take the 2nd Amendment to the United States Constitution (the right to keep and bear arms) seriously.
Patriotic enough to recognize that my country is far from perfect and has faults, as do all others in the world. I've lived in several, and saw advantages and disadvantages everywhere, as does this country where I presently live.

Not as patriotic as I used to be thanks to the EU! I'm German! Not European!

And we have to many...well...foreigners here. They ruin us.

Germany gets crappier and crappier, but yeah I'm still proud to be from zis country. :D

France gets crappier and crappier but that is because of the socialist plague and the assisted parasites that leech money and live on the honest hardworking and law abiding citizens necks since 5 decades and they do vote socialist.

Then be a loner ignore your instincts, and live in solitude. The rest of us will keep going and be a part of something.

solitude? :1orglaugh

I'm not the one who wants to fence himself off from the rest of the species and live in an exclusive enclave where everybody has the same views as everyone else.....

My instincts tell me that people who seek safety in groups have some growing up to do.

they should really get with the program of endless flag waving and uncritical praise of their country at all times.

as independently minded folk do.....

Dude you have to belong to a tribe. This doesn't necessarily mean you should seek the detriment of others but belonging somewhere is critical to self definition.

emceeemcee I hear you but I think your too idealistic such dreams have been the dreams of many including people of power, influence and intellectuals. It will never come to past unless we actually radically change our environments we grow up in and begin genetic engineering on ourselves. Extreme I know but as always we are in eternal warfare with our natures.
