Food Recommendations...

The secret ingredient? MY BALLS
Personally, I don't really get the chance to explore the grocery store like I want to. There are food items that I would probably never even notice if it wasn't for someone else's recommendation.

It's the godam prices that have me all twisted !

About a year and a half . . two years ago, I'd average about 4 bags of groceries for $50- ! Today I'm lucky if it's over two bags ! :dunno:

I sought some relief, as I wanted to have more disposable funds to spend on "fun stuff" / to place under the mattress (rainy day $$).

There's all sorts of ways to save !

1. Pull the grocery / drugstore ads out of your local Sat. paper and go out and buy what's on sale. If you're lucky, most all of these stores are no greater than a couple miles apart.
If the specific item you want isn't on sale, buy a substitute or wait 'till next week, as most of the regular items that I purchase are, in fact, on sale approx one week a month.
When on sale, buy a month supply.

2. Shop at a Bakery Thrift Store ! Everything's always fresh at my local outlets. In the spirit of the thread, these are the places where you'll likely find all sorts of interesting goodies. Savings run about 50 - 55% cheaper at these Bakery Outlets, as compared to my giant monopoly chain superstores.
Many feature more than just bakery items to boot ! Milk, eggs, Orange Juice, condiments . . . check 'em out ! I regularly save about $2 - per dozen eggs when compared to the monopoly stores' outrageous price of $3.49 / doz.

3. Take a peek into your local "Big Lots" stores. While not terrific in the food & beverage areas, you'll find bargains on i.e. - 6 pack dial white bar soap B.L. - 1.59 ! monopoly grocer prices - $4.69 / 6. Dishwasher crystals - big f'en box B.L. - $1.99 monopoly chain - $5.69 !!

Now you have some extra cash to buy the specialized goodies as chef has mentioned.

Often I will hunt for stuff that is on sale and relatively cheap compared to normal and then buy a lot of it and store most of it for later. Of course you can't do that with everything, and sometimes you will **** to wait forever to eat some of it. Like if I buy a lot of pasta that's on sale I might have to wait a couple of months before any place has pasta sauce that is on sale so I can eat them together. Overall I end up saving money just eating things I have in storage that were bought on sale before and buying things on sale for later. That and I also rarely buy name brand products.

for a snack everybody should try:
wasabi peas
shrimp crackers

i also love mexican food, try a torta cubano, or get milanesa and chorizo mix torta.

I like to make scrambled eggs and then mix sour cream into, after they're cooked all the way through, but before you take them out of the pan. Sounds weird, but it's delicious.

Another weird but good one: a spoonful of peanut butter in a pot of chili (do NOT use chunky peanut butter). Sounds completely disgusting, but something in the peanut butter enhances the flavor of the chili without intruding upon it. A friend told me about this and I was very skeptical until I tried it for myself. Now, I never eat chili without putting some peanut butter in it.

That's cool that you actually do that. I've heard that people do it, but I've never met one before.

Peanuts go really well with spicy foods. It all stems from Thai food, as they use a lot of peanut based sauces that contain a heavy amount of heat. Mexican food also brought about mole (moe-lay), which is basically a spicy peanut butter sauce.

I've never put peanut butter in my chili though. Maybe I'll give it a whirl. :dunno:

If you like mole, you'll like the peanut butter trick. Good to see someone else open minded about food. I thought I was going to get half a dozen "ew, gross" replies.

I suppose my oatmeal mixed in with fried egg whites suggestion probably wouldn't go over too well here.

I love egg whites fried in hot oil so they lace in grits. mmmmmmmmm

I won't do your whole quote, but they are good tips.

I want to add that I plan my meals around what is on sale that week and any bogo (buy one get one) items so I in fact get two weeks of meals for the price of one. USE your freezer! If possible a good bogo of something you really like buy two and get two free (of course we know that simply boils down to half price) but what a savings. Know your prices at various stores so you know if you're getting a deal. One thing bogo at one store may still come higher per that at another.

Save time in the kitchen too, double cook some things. Example, I used to cook twice the needed cubed potatoes one night, mash 1/2 that night. Put 1/2 in the fridge for the next night and then the next day only have to cook the meat and veggie no messing with the tators. This can be done with many things.
