Has anyone noticed that Senator Obama seems to be "off limits" for comedians and late night television? Dave Letterman and Jay Leno fill their monologues with jokes of McCain's age and appearance while Obama is left alone. Is he being treated differently because of a fear of the hosts being called racist? The only real jokes and shots at Obama that I have seen were made by Chris Rock. I just find it curious that only the right wing political talking heads are the only ones that mention him at all.The entertainers seem to be afraid of the topic.--Just an observation.

I wouldn't say Letterman, because he has lots of nice things to say about McCain.

But in general, you'll find hollywood and TV media left-leaning, so it's not unexpected.
Just like you'll see even more slanted right in the radio media, it's just their preference.

Letterman was scathing over McCain cancelling his appearance to rush back to Washington to fix the credit crisis. He said, "Something stinks about this", numerous times and he wasn't talking about week old fish.

I'm sure there's a well publicized youtube clip already posted here.

Let me just go and look it up;

Letterman has been after McCain especially lately.Ever since he cancelled an apperance to rush back to DC and work on the bail out when he was "suspending" his campaign right before the 1st debate.Letterman has been mocking that whole episode a lot.I just saw a clip of Leno making fun of Biden saying he looks different and might have had some Botox.I think if comedians see something they can make light off they will no matter who you are.Obama being still young and not having been nearly as erractic as McCain or not even saying some of the off the cuff stuff you can make fun of that Biden says occasionally just doesn't give them much to make light off.

I still think there's some credit to showing how American comedians avoid black candidates, unless they are black.
I seriously doubt it's because he's young, otherwise they wouldn't go after Palin.
No offense, but Obama has made some doozers, as did Al Gore, etc...

Well for sure there is a certain type of humor which would be seen as having racial overtones that people like Leno and Lettermen wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole where maybe a black comedian might. But there is a big difference in a Obama and a Palin IMO.Katie Couric is not going to "stump" Obama with a question where he replies "I will have to get back to you" or not be able not to name any other supreme court decision besides Roe V Wade.If that is really all she knows and she just didn't get nervous and freeze up (which would be a not so good thing in and of itself) then she really is totally unqualified to hold any important govt position much less a heartbeat away from the Presidency. She is tailor made to be made fun of with those appearences and interviews. One I saw with Tina Fey on SNL was basically just saying what Sarah said ,its funny even though it's not meant to be,that's a comedians dream.

Rattrap

Doesn't feed trolls and would appreciate it if you
A couple of things arrived in my inbox the other day.

The first one's hilarious - if you haven't seen it yet, you should. It's John McCain cracking a bunch jokes at a memorial dinner: McCain at Al Smith Memorial Dinner.

The second is something I do not endorse (one way or the other), but thought it might be an interesting topic of conversation. It's a theme that generally strikes me as true, but I'm in a very liberal part of the country where this sort of thing is thrown at me all the time.

Day in the Life of Joe Middle-Class Republican

by John Gray

Joe gets up at 6:00am to prepare his morning coffee. He fills his pot full of good clean drinking water because some liberal fought for minimum water quality standards. He takes his daily medication with his first swallow of coffee. His medications are safe to take because some liberal fought to insure their safety and work as advertised.

All but $10.00 of his medications are paid for by his employers medical plan because some liberal union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance, now Joe gets it too. He prepares his morning breakfast, bacon and eggs this day. Joe’s bacon is safe to eat because some liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat packing industry.

Joe takes his morning shower reaching for his shampoo; His bottle is properly labeled with every ingredient and the amount of its contents because some liberal fought for his right to know what he was putting on his body and how much it contained. Joe dresses, walks outside and takes a deep breath. The air he breathes is clean because some tree hugging liberal fought for laws to stop industries from polluting our air. He walks to the subway station for his government subsidized ride to work; it saves him considerable money in parking and transportation fees. You see, some liberal fought for affordable public transportation, which gives everyone the opportunity to be a contributor.

Joe begins his work day; he has a good job with excellent pay, medicals benefits, retirement, paid holidays and vacation because some liberal union members fought and died for these working standards. Joe’s employer pays these standards because Joe’s employer doesn’t want his employees to call the union. If Joe is hurt on the job or becomes unemployed he’ll get a worker compensation or unemployment check because some liberal didn’t think he should lose his home because of his temporary misfortune.

Its noon time, Joe needs to make a Bank Deposit so he can pay some bills. Joe’s deposit is federally insured by the FSLIC because some liberal wanted to protect Joe’s money from unscrupulous bankers who ruined the banking system before the depression.

Joe has to pay his Fannie Mae underwritten Mortgage and his below market federal student loan because some stupid liberal decided that Joe and the government would be better off if he was educated and earned more money over his life-time.

Joe is home from work, he plans to visit his father this evening at his farm home in the country. He gets in his car for the drive to dads; his car is among the safest in the world because some liberal fought for car safety standards. He arrives at his boyhood home. He was the third generation to live in the house financed by Farmers Home Administration because bankers didn’t want to make rural loans. The house didn’t have electric until some big government liberal stuck his nose where it didn’t belong and demanded rural electrification. (Those rural Republican’s would still be sitting in the dark)

He is happy to see his dad who is now retired. His dad lives on Social Security and his union pension because some liberal made sure he could take care of himself so Joe wouldn’t have to. After his visit with dad he gets back in his car for the ride home.

He turns on a radio talk show, the host’s keeps saying that liberals are bad and conservatives are good. (He doesn’t tell Joe that his beloved Republicans have fought against every protection and benefit Joe enjoys throughout his day) Joe agrees, “We don’t need those big government liberals ruining our lives; after all, I’m a self made man who believes everyone should take care of themselves, just like I have”.

Not long to go before election day!

Obama isn't an easy target for comedians. In fact, he's gonna put a serious damper on political comedy if he wins.

Seriously, we're talking about a guy who's not fat, not cheating on his wife, not stupid, not angry and not a phony. Who needs an asshole like that around for the next 4 years?

And what makes it even harder for comedians, is that on top of being perfect, he's black. And liberals are afraid to laugh at anything with a black person in it. Which is silly because, when someone does an Obama joke, it isn't about all blacks. Just like when someone makes a George Bush joke, it's not a swipe at all retarded people.

true tubuler,
good post

- but i reckon tony blair was probably nigh on as popular a new prime
minister over here as obama would be a prez in the us
and while i definitely don't wish to see the junior senator from Illinois get corrupted by power & go to shit like tb did, i'm sure the comedians would/will be able to come up with somethin decent about an obama presidency
:)

Obama. I was thinking, If the US is in debt and just fucked up in general being ran the way its been run since day one, then why not welcome the change that Mr. Obama can possibly bring???

Maybe, just maybe its time to diversify the White House

Maybe just maybe, its time for the general US public to realize what's really going on and to stop being blinded by all this bullshit.

Instead of gonig with the people who scare you, go with the people who actually bring you hope.

And I don't mean scare in the literal sense, I mean in the sense that they scare you with what they have to say in order to keep you in line.

Oh well. There's too many people who don't know the truth to make a difference.

So... Who is actually going to vote Tuesday? Or who has already voted?

What does Obama have for you ?

What does Obama have for me ?
Hopefully, Very VERY Little.

If change includes the imposition of those, unrelated to the root source of what Obama perceives as the problem, how could I possibly champion that ? Trickle down misery ? Is that fair ?

I break it . . I pay for it !!!
I break nothing !!!

As far as late night comedians go I also think some of the reason they go after McCain more is the fact Obama just doesn't give them as much good material to make fun of him about it, not yet anyhow.

I voted neither as I would have preferred Hillary as President. I hope that Obama wins, but would not be surprised if McCain's panic button politics win it.

Why,
because, Obama's National Civilian Police Force might come over to their studio . . . and . . ?
Or, are you suggesting that the guy is just plain humorless ? :p

Seriously, we're talking about a guy who's not fat
Well, who is ? and even if he was, what does that have to do with how one governs ?
not cheating on his wife
Since when does heterosexual, marital fidelity play an important role in the democratic party apparatus. Actually, we should deduct points for that. :p
not stupid
, he's an ideologue !
not angry
With the calm, cool and collected "reverend wrong" as his mentor for the last 20 years . . and . . not to mention, living under the tyrannical - authoritarian duress of wifeski Michelle and you make claim that the man's not angry ? He couldn't possibly be a pleasant man.
and not a phony
. Just an unprecedented number of loose ends and seedy associates, yet to (if ever) be investigated for a Presidential candidate.

Additionally -

What is all of this "SACRIFICE" that this man (obama) is talking about ? Has anybody yet, had the wherewithal to query the guy on the specifics, as to what the he!! he's talking about ?
Just yesterday, I heard him talk about the "fact" that 95 % of us will be unaffected by his tax proposal, yet, he added the obligatory "we all have to carry our own weight" - sacrificial lamb - talk. Next time you hear the man address his crowds, listen for the "sacrifice talk". It's included in every one of his speaking engagements. . . Sorta bone chilling.

I simply won't allow this guy to stump me ! I have to weigh every single word he says . . after all, he is an Ivy League Law-yeah. :p
