2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa qualification

^
As a nation. Nope. But soccer is growing in popularity. ESPN is finally starting to show EPL games. That will slowly grow general interest in soccer in the U.S. Plus, if the Men's team continues to play well in big matches (like Spain and Brazil)...than popularity will only increase

Because of the overall lack of enthusiasm about Assoc. Football in the States, I think that there aren't really any casual fans. The people that do like it are serious about it and it's that dedicated minority that keeps it going.

I think this a world cup I wont be sad about missing out on,with all the muggings and shit that goes on down there :wave2:

yeah man thats what i've been thinking...tourists are going to be the ultimate target.

i live in South Africa, Port Elizabeth which is close to the stadium:tongue:

but really the best way for people to avoid getting mugged would be to not display their jewelry and other expensive shit as that's really asking for trouble here.

My cousin lived in Johannesburg for 8 years happilly, until his wife
got mugged and they came back to Scotland.

I guess if you do the right things - like what you say,and not make
a big target for yourself, then you should be ok.

But then again, you don't know how desparate those people can be
and how far they will really go :dunno:

Well the draw for the Euro playoffs got made today...

Republic of Ireland v France
Portugal v Bosnia-Hercegovina
Greece v Ukraine
Russia v Slovenia

Looks like Ireland got unlucky

yup the best thing is to try and blend in with the local people so you don't look like a tourist ;)

I'm South African and live in Canada now, but I lived in Cape Town for over 18 years and still go back once a year. Crime is a problem, but if you are street wise and stay in tourist friendly areas then you should be fine. Don't leave anything valuable or visible in your rental car, carry 5 rand coins to give to car guards, and if you go out at tonight go in a group and go to places like The Waterfront, Claremont, or Camps Bay. Most of those places have private security there.

I would choose Cape Town if you can, but I don't follow soccer so I'm not sure where all the games are;) But Cape Town is so beautiful and is worth visiting even without the World Cup.

yeah Cape Town is very nice...the scenery is beautiful :) i lived there for 3 years and now im back in PE.

Wow it's nice to see a (technically) South African pornstar haha :glugglug:

We got france im not too worried about them they are not half the team they used to be i think we can take them. i would have prefered the away leg 1st but we will see what happens. it wall be heartbreaking to lose this playoff.

Ireland v France, I say bring it on!!!

I'm not afraid of France, think Ireland's younger team can get the job done. Either way, serious amounts of Guinness will be consumed on Nov 14 and 18!!!

 wish the 1st leg was on the wed and the 2nd leg on the sat :) i guess i wont be going to college on the thursday morning hopefully i will be celebrating getting to the world cup :glugglug:

Republic of Ireland v France
Portugal v Bosnia Herzegovina
Greece v Ukraine
Russia v Slovenia

I think that these are very difficult games for everyone, France are not the team they used to be, and i can see them losing against Ireland. I think Ukraine will beat Greece.

The other two are will be very close games, Portugal i think will just pull it off, but i want Bosnia to win, and i think Slovenia will just edge passed Russia.

I think it will be France, Portugal, Greece and Russia, why?, here's why:
France.- It's a powerhouse, even though they are struggling now, they have the talent to finally pull through.
Portugal.- FIFA would never allow the world's most expensive player to miss 2010,
C. Ronaldo will be there.
Greece.- Rehhagel must have his day in the World Cup, even if his team is knocked out early in the group stage.
Russia.- The best of the lot, Hiddink has really done a great job with this former mediocre side.

why do so many people call it soccer, i hate that word. call it football or don't talk about it.

FIFA has nothing to do without it. Unless they make up some phony penalty kick in the last minute or something.

i REALLY, REALLY don't want Ronaldo go to South Africa. He doesn't deserve it. He's too damn cocky.

My prayers are with Bosnia. GO BOSNIA! shove it up the ass of that arrogant preak!

Soccer is a better word than football. I don't see Americans ever calling the sport football. Like it or not, the American market is "THE FUTURE" for World Football :thefinger

I think France could lose to Ireland because Domenech continues to play his favorites. He thinks its still 1998.

I agree about Russia. I think they are the *darkhorse* team....Portugal is totally overrated even with Ronaldoosh

Yeah, right, soccer is a better word for a game that's about kicking a ball around with your feet. That's why it's called "Fußball" (football) in German, "zúqiú" (football) in Chinese, "calcio" (kicking) or "pallone" (ball) in Italian, "fútbol" (football) in Spanish, "football" in French...
But because America is the market of the future (not China by any chance or India or Russia), as some Americans claim, all the world has to call it soccer. Sure. Well, at least you managed to scare the Japanese into calling it "Sakkâ" (Soccer) instead of the words they have for it like "kemari" or "shûkyû".

I somehow can't stop thinking, that this "lottery" for the Europeans play-offs was faked. Honestly, how big are the odds that in every pairing an underdog goes against a hands-down favorite?
Don't get me wrong, I really like, what Bosnia Herzegovina has done so far in the qualifyings, but Portugal, I don't think so. And when push comes to shove, everyone knows that France is amongst the top teams worldwide. That's why the Republic of Ireland, as charismatic as they may have been so far, will be eliminated. Same goes for Russia and Slovenia. No real expert seriously expects Slovenia to kick Russia out of the world cup. The only tight pairing is Greece vs Ukraine. And still the Greeks will win this no doubt, even if only by a hair.
