I usually chuckle when non-soccer people make recommendations to "improve" the game. Sorry, but I firmly believe it doesn't need changes. Sure, there should be less flopping, but that comes from leagues fining and suspending players for doing it, from refs not falling for it, and players calling out the floppers. As far as rule changes, no thanks.

The only change I'd make is for everyone to take a shot in the shoot-out, with the possible exception of the keepers. No one gets to hide, and they do it as a team to a degree.

In defense of people me and people like me the sport really does suck. People around the world have looked the other way from that for a long time now due to deeply held traditions about that have for some reason become near sacred, and the fact they have grown up conditioned to it. Any single game boils down to a glorified version of a coin flip and it just doesn't seem like that because so few teams have such a unthinkably huge off the field advantage over the others in their leagues they can even overcome that. It would be like if the NFL never created the forward pass or the basketball never instituted the shot clock except soccer even started out much more random, flawed, and lethargic than the other early sports to begin with. It's like something that started out as a mindless game to have fun and kill time, and has never evolved into what should be a professional sport,...yet it somehow is.

Even sports I like I can admit the faults of them.

Hmmm. You know so much. Definitely not following a stereotype. Tell us more???

Wow. Please tell us? We'll get the relevant authorities to change them immediately.

Parts of why Soccer is so popular all over the world is that the rules are very simple. Someone who doesn't know anything about soccer could learn the rules within a half-time and then have learned almost al the sport's rules.

Another big advantage is that you don't need much to play it. You just need a ball, doesn't even have to be a football and two improvised goals. For ice-hockey, american football and such you need soo much equipment, but even if you are a poor kid in africa or south america you can play football. You just meet up with a couple of friends, one brings an old ball and you just put up goals with rucksacks or something, if you don't have access to a soccer field.

Did you notice that in soccer 80% of the time the ball is in the backfield? No wonder crossing mid-field makes the crowd jump out of their seats. I remember the time with no shot clock in college basketball. NC would come into Princeton and their run and gun offence would many times get shut down. Still, Princeton had to move the ball out of the back court in time and couldn't move it back.
