That's because we already have "football" in the USA, it would only confuse people. Unless we called in European football.

here is why it's called soccer in the USA, The word "soccer" comes from an alteration of "assoc.", which is an abbreviation of "association football"

The use of the term can be traced back to about 1880: it's documented as soccer or socca in 1889, and socker in 1891. Soccer seemed have become the most common phrase by 1895. Originally it was only university slang; it was habitual for English university students in the 1880s to abreviate any word and then add on 'er' or 'ers' to it (so breakfast became brekkers, or rugby became ruggers). Because this linguistic habit belonged to an elite social group is probably why the name soccer never caught on among the masses in most of the world. Perhaps it would never have caught on in the United States, except that Americans already had their own preferred 'football' game.

I know that, jasonk282, I know that and I get your point. It's at least a more valid point than "we Americans call it soccer so the world has to call it soccer".
Still doesn't make "soccer" the better word. ;) I to this day don't get why the US calls her own Americanized version of rugby "football". In fact, rugby has more to do with "football" than "American football" has, if you know what I mean. Anyway...

Yep I know what you mean considering that our football started out as rugby, maybe it's that fact that we feel the need to change everything that the british gave us. Chips=fries, football=soccer, rugby=football, our complete disintrest in the metric system, although it's WAY easier than the Imperial system and the list goes on and on.

BTW Rugby is a kick ass sport and wish it was played more here in the States. What are some good rugby team in the UK?

Something is seriously wrong with the criteria for qualifications. New Zealand qualify after beating the likes of Vanuatu, Fiji, New Caledonia and Bahrain while teams like Turkey, Czech Rep. and Croatia have to stay at home. I don't get it.

New Zealand qualifies for the World cup, I like it when a lower ranking teams go to the World cup, a opportunity to learn more about the lower ranking teams.

I am glad New Zealand qualified. Maybe it will inspire more kids to play and improve the quality of New Zealand's overall play. Look at the South Korean squad. 20 years ago, they were OK. Now they dominate Asian qualifying and will be a threat in the World Cup

I think...It's split up into conferences, NZ qualified in the Oceanic Conference, after playing some intercontinental games too(Bahrain). Only 1 team maximum from that conference is allowed.
There are 13 spots for European teams :dunno:

The only intercontinental match for NZ was today's game against powerhouse Bahrain. :1orglaugh

I understand the World Cup to be a competition for the BEST teams in the world to fight it out against each other. Why do there have to be five slots for Asia/Oceania when in 2006 the only team from that region to reach the knock-out rounds was Australia?

Asian teams didn't do well in any recent World Cup with the exception of 2002 when South Korea and Japan profited from home advantage and friendly refs.

I really don't see the point in awarding them more than two or three slots from a competitive perspective. It's due to the increasing political and economic power of the region inside FIFA that guarantees them overrepresentation in South Africa.

And besides, I wouldn't mind seeing the World Cup to be played with 24 or even 16 teams again. Too many redundant and boring matches soil the overall impression. :2 cents:

Nonetheless, I congratulate thee and your brethren on making it to South Africa, Lungzyn! :)

My Ireland out to Henry's handball and Gallas's goal (and I'm an Arsenal fan, ouch!)

It hurts to go out like this, but pleased we were better than a big team.
Hope Italy beats them again in South Africa!

Well done Ireland, all the players can hold their heads up high!

I haven't seen the goal yet but followed the commentary by Barry Glendenning (an Irishman) on the guardian website. Apparently Henry handballs twice and two players are offside in the build up.

Glendenning was crushed but made the point that tomorrow when the ref sees the replay of his error he will be as crushed as the players. Errors by refs as cruel as they are don't stick in the craw as much as the rejigging of the play offs to suit the 'seeded' teams that didn't get through at the first try.

I'm totally not bitter about it. This happens in Soccer and life goes on. Some of my pals were saying it was a conspiracy and that Ireland were never going to go through. I say we should have got the job done in Dublin. France looked weak and would have gone out to a cockier team (for example, Turkey or even Bosnia) but I sensed that Ireland were never going to get that killer goal.

That's the way it goes! I would say Cest La Vie, but I'm off anything french at the moment!
