My Brewers don't totally suck.

As far as I know.

But even if that's the case, I don't care.

Word is right now that "your" Brewers might be getting a whole lot better as soon as tomorrow with the impending and almost official trade acquisition of C.C. Sabathia.

Now they have some more ammo for when they play the Cubs.

Go White Sox!

and the brewers are not giving up all the good prospects plus if both c.c. and sheets leave 4 draft picks become theirs as compensation. everybody else has been put on notice to win their divisions because the wild card comes from the nl central this year

I have to say that I'm surprised this trade went down right now. Cleveland was in a good position to get some good prospects. No doubt that LaPorta has the potential to be great, but the Indians didn't really get anything too special outside of him, and especially with the deadline approaching (which usually sees GMs willing to part with more high level talent) I'm surprised the Indians didn't hold out for a better deal.

Plain and simple, they have thrown in the towel.I think that they are looking towards next year and the following year after that already.

I have a feeling that Sabathia isn't the only one that's out the door.I see them making some big line-up moves in the off season,by dumping some of their dead weight,i.e,Travis Hafner.

I would have been almost impossible to get 2 or 3 high end prospects for CC because he is a free agent at the end of the year. So basicly anyone who was going to trade for him was "renting" him for the second half of the year.

Plus CC really likes it in Cleveland, so hey may end up re-signing with them at the end of the season.

agreed! it is well known that he is looking to become a free agent and play the market after the season is over!

Go White Sox!!! How about John Danks?! I bet Texas is kicking themselves for that move!

Hey Mets fans, I suggest you all watch the Giants series if you dig pitching. First two games are sure to be incredible and the last game you guys can have.

no offense, cause i'm just curious:

what is the fun in watching baseball? i've watched about 20 mlb games (just on german tv) and it kind of turnes me on when a player hits the ball hard - but 90% of the game is pitching, out, pitching, strike, pitching, strike, pitching, out, pitching, strike, pause, next player same again, audience closeups, maybe a hit, next player, ...., large pause, more audience closeups, larger pause...

so.. what is the magic of that game that so many people are fans of it? on which things do you pay attention, what is important to look at so that a german baseball-greenhorn may understand the story without sleeping away before the seventh inning?

It's sort of like comedy. If you have to have it explained to you, you are probably not going to "get it". BTW your description of the game is probably the way most Americans feel about soccer(football) save for the details.

I feel the appreciation of the game comes with knowledge of it. There is beauty to be found in almost everything that happens. Whether you are in the park or watching on TV, there are so many things to analyze. Aside from rooting for your team (when applicable), there is: predicting how a batter-pitcher matchup will work out, guessing which pitch the pitcher will throw, guessing if the batter will take the pitch, swing away, or bunt, guessing whether the runner will steal, your first instinct of how the play will turn out when the ball hits the bat (i.e. where it will go, if someone will field it), watching the skill of the batters and fielders when the ball is in play, watching where the catcher sets up for each pitch, making your own personal call as to whether the taken pitch is a ball or strike, making your own calls for safe or out, etc...there is just so much going on that non-fans don't realize. And that's without making mention of the STATS. Baseball is probably the most statistically oriented game on earth. Stats tell you how well players hit, how well they hit in certain situations, how they field, how they pitch, how long they can pitch, what are their strengths and weaknesses, how well they steal, how likely they are to drive in runs, etc... Basically everything pertaining to the game can be analyzed in statistics. Many fans of baseball, myself included, love looking at the stats as much as watching the players themselves.

Like Dean Wormer said, it's hard thing to explain why baseball is so great for some of us. It's something you can't put a finger on. Why does baseball thrill me with its anticipation, skill and power? It just does.....

God baseball must be the most boring game to watch if you dont have a rooting interest. It is quite slow and might be hard to follow. As for all those punk ass kids with their baseball caps cocked off to the side, the bill not having the proper crease and no idea what teams hat they are wearing they can go fly a kite.

thanks senob for your detailed briefing. at least it was a good try ;)

well may i just didn't know enough, haven't seen enough. i'll give my best. is there any "outsider" team (not that well known like red sox or yankees) in the league which is cool to watch and has abilities to play a surprising season?

___

BTW your description of the game is probably the way most Americans feel about soccer(football) save for the details.

maybe, even if i think you can't compare those kind of games. even if soccer doesn't grab your attention, the game (from the kind of gameplay) holds the possibility for permanent action when it's running. in this way you can compare soccer more to games like basketball, icehockey - ok, it's not that fast and you won't see that much goals (or better said -result changing situations), but it's far from being a game very slow and mostly on hold. it's a more constant flow of action with a wide range for dramaturgy and different sceneries - and there is no rule that says when a team is allowed to be offensive: that's what those kind of games are about - getting control on the ball. to get into soccer, i recommend a top game of uk's premier league (arsenal vs chelsea, manu vs city, liverpool vs manu, ...).

That's a very good description, senob.
There are all kinds of mini-dramas and subtexts going on that would escape the new or casual viewer.

Also baseball doesn't have a time clock, which makes it unique among major sports, and lends a lot to the evolution of each individual game.

It's mildly amazing (in a good way) that baseball is still so popular in a society as attention deficit disordered as america's.

isn't the amount of innings restricted?

No. It will just keep on going until the visiting team scores and the home team doesn't or until the home team scores. Although I think the American League has a curfew that no new inning can begin after 1:00 a.m. local time. The National league has no curfew. I once watched a Met game that ended at about 4:15 a.m.

lol The vast vast majority of games end after the standard 8 1/2 or nine innings.
But if the game's tied after nine innings Dean's right, they can go on and on and on....and actually those games are often some of the most enjoyable to watch :D
