2008 MLB Thread

I just think the Rays are the surprise package right now. They've surprised even themselves. They should be feeling confident right now.

Who knew all they had to do was remove Devil from the Rays, now if the Yanks get rid of the Evil Empire moniker they will be back to their championship ways.

I agree with the first part, but not with the second part. What Reyes did was not right and he has to learn to grow up. However, I don't think Reyes is a part of the underachieving Mets. I feel he has done his part this year. He is hitting close to .300, for one thing, which is up from last year. When I point fingers, I point mostly at Delgado, Heilman and injuries.

I was refering more to his attitude then his playing. Stuff like that can definetly divide a club house. Plus it makes him look selfish.

I agree with you on that. Interestingly the local news took a different tack on it, saying his tantrum demonstrated the demands he puts on himself for quality play. Since he did say in the post game interview that he did that because he was mad at himself for making the off-line throw. However, Jose really has to watch because a lot of people took that tantrum to mean he was upset at Delgado for not making the tricky play. Hopefully this incident won't cause any problems. Thank God the Mets won the game and the error didn't cost them the win.

You got to love how some people in the media interpret the way players act by what they want. If a player is doing good and he's not showing any emotion they will talk about how steady and business like he is, and of course if he's doing badly they will talk about how he's emotionless and doesn't care. It probably works the same way when they act out, but at least with acting out you know they lack control of themselves. That rarely makes them better.

well the giants smoked the a's 11-1 and in there division they are 3rd currently because arizona has slipped so bad that they lead the divison with a .500 record kinda like the al central earlier this year

It's interesting how the NL West and East seem to have become weaker divisions and the Central is beating up on everybody and playing the best ball this year. A lot of people figured Arizona, Colorado and Los Angeles, to be good teams this year in the West and Philly and the Mets to be good in the East, but they just haven't panned out like the Central's Chicago, St. Louis and Milwaukee.

fwiw, the all star game voting ends at 11:59 PM ET on Wednesday, July 2, 2008. You can vote a maximum of 25 times.

my ballot:

AL --- mauer, morneu, kinsler, a-rod, m.young, hamilton, sizemore, carlos quentin (as a write-in)
NL --- mcann, pujols(personal cards bias), utley, c.jones, braun, mcclouth, ludwick

morneu vs. youkliss is a tossup ; utley vs. uggla's a tossup ; martin vs. mcann's a tossup ; NL outfield also has a lot of deserving players

I voted for David Ortiz at AL DH - no one on the ballot deserves to make the all star game. There's no way ortiz will be able to play so they'ld have to name a much more deserving player to the team than him or matsui.

Vote for Ryan Ludwick. :spump:

All-Star game is a sham, have you seen how many Cubs and Astros are in there??? Alfonso Soriano is leading votes in the outfield and hes been hurt most of the year. Mark DeRosa? What the hell has J.R. Towles done? Nothing but bat below the Mendoza line last I checked. Kaz Matsui, hasnt he been a failure for 3 teams already? It's a friggin popularity contest... Deepest apologies for the rant, cant wait to see the pitching in the Bronx though.

More than I can say for the Blue Jays. We are 4-1 in the last five, but still last in the division.:(

w00t "The Freak" on the cover of SI. Looks like Timmah is getting some recognition. But what is this SI jinx I keep hearing about? Quick give me some counters to these jinxes, hes pitching tomorrow against the Cubs. Oh no, I see 8 runs in 2 innings and an injury, not good.:weeping:

Why is it that they call him "The Freak"? I was just curious as I seem to have garnered that nickname around here! :D

^^^ My friend you are the one and only super freak. You be bringing in guys and gals from all over the place. While the guy on SI is a diminutive freak who throws balls around for a living.

Blue Jays low-flyin' baseball news:
...Hey Aunt Minnie...while yer in the cellar could ya bring up some pickles?

--Congrats to OF Alex Rios! He has the team's highest BA with a mammoth .284!
--Congrats to the Jays for defeating the shoot-yourself-in-the-foot Angels 7-4 yesterday. Says Vernon Wells: "I wish I was still on the DL so we could start winning."
--Manager Cito Gaston is optimistic: "Well, the second half[of the season] brings something different for everyone." Maybe the Easter Bunny will bring Toronto a pennant...NAH!
--Only eight of the Jays' home runs this season have been against left-handed pitching...each one hit by a different player. Now THAT'S teamwork!!!
--The Jays are 19-27 away from the Skydome. Maybe every stadium should have an oyster bar!

yeah the bluejays are under achieving but look at the nl west where no team is even .500 and the giants are actually in the race despite a team that has no true identity. hell the dodgers made barry z look like nolan ryan yesterday and what the hell happened to arizona

What a great epic win for the Mets today! Terrific start by Oliver Perez, pitched shutout ball for 7 innings. In the 8th inning was a 2 hour 15 minute rain delay. Mets scored a run in the top of the ninth for a 2-0 lead. Billy Wagner came in, and had the Phillies down to their last strike, when he blew the save, allowing Jayson Werth to hit a game-tying 2 run HR. No more scoring until the top of the 12th when Fernando Tatis (already a 12th inning hero once this season) hit a 2-run homer to give the Mets the 4-2 lead. Joe Smith retired the side in the bottom of the 12th to pick up the win with his 2 1/3 inning outing matching the longest of his career. Smith, a right-handed specialist pitched brilliantly to lefties and righties alike. His extended outing was due to the Mets only having one pitcher left in their bullpen, their long-man Tony Armas Jr. who had already pitched the previous day. The game ended 7+ hours after it started, but the Mets still showed plenty of fire in their play even though they didn't score a whole lot of runs.

Great win for the Mets who have now taken 2 of 3 from the Phils and move to 3.5 games behind them in the NL East.
