I voted (of course) for Brazil, they got all the biggest stars and are the title holders. I see that some people question Brazils defensive capabilities, but I think they look strong with both Dida and Lucio, the latter which is a very underrated defender. Also famous back Roberto Carlos and Edmilson make a steady defense.

Other teams I consider as very strong are:

Italy - looked very impressive against a rather weak Germany. They were very effective, which is key in football today. They also have very good defenders and maybe the best goalie in the world.

Czeck Rep. - they have been an outsider in every tournament they've played in the later years and I think they will be strong this year as well. Their coach (Karel Brukner ?) is a mastermind, and they have strong offensive players. I'm not sure how Jan Koller is doing atm, but if he's in shape they will be very strong. They also have a extremly good keeper, which I rank second after Buffon. I would like to know if anyone can tell me if Pavel Nedved and Jan Koller is playing in the World Cup.

England - it's always hard to predict England, they often seem to have a good team, but they're always playing with so much pressure, which I think is their biggest weakness. I honestly dont think they'll win, but they may, as they have good players.

And so for the big disapointments:

Spain - always looking so strong, always doing so bad. I don't know why, but it seems like Spain never reach the expectations.

Argentina - a great nation in football history, which deserve to win again. However, I don't think their team is good enough to get past the round of 16.

Holland - they just seem to always do well in the qualifying, and then fail in the playoffs.

Finally I just want to say I think it's sad that Ireland didn't make it, as they look strong, and that Serbia & Montenegro might be a big surprise.

Only in the sense they're not participating.

Which is sad, because they have a really good striker talent (Andrei Arshavin) who's palying for Zenit. He's a player to watch for in the future.

International friendly (just came over on the BBC):

Germany 4 - USA 1

france are maybe one of the favourites as well, as to who will win the world cup its has to be Brazil. They are really looking strong, especially Ronaldinho!

Spain coach Luis Aragones has dropped a huge hint that Pepe Reina will be rewarded for an excellent first season in the Premiership with a place in his country's World Cup squad.
Reina has settled easily into English football and has seen off the challenge of Jerzy Dudek and Scott Carson to make the number one position his own since his summer move from Villarreal.

The Liverpool goalkeeper faces tough competition for a first team place with his country from Valencia 'keeper Santiago Canizares and Iker Casillas of Real Madrid.

However, Aragones said: "I don't want to highlight my plans for the World Cup too much but the goalkeeper situation looks very clear.

"Canizares is in great form at the momemt but Casillas and Reina are also doing very well. In principle, they will be the ones going to the World Cup."

I went to the bookies the other day for like the first time in my life, and I put two bets on. I put £5 on Spain who were 11-4 to win as my regular bet, but I also put an outside one on - hence why i've put in the post that another team will win. I reckon it's gonna be Mexico this year - very strong, very underrated side. Anyway, there you go. And the odds for them were 94-2.

World Cup 2006 cancelled

This news has just been announced:

World Cup 2006 cancelled

It is now official that the FIFA World Cup 2006 in Germany is cancelled.
There were extraordinary debates about this today in the Bundestag (German parliament), discussions between FIFA and German politicians had been going on the days before.

In an interview, FIFA president Sepp Blatter said: "We know this descision must be like a slap in the face of all the nations teams that had put so much effort in preparing themselves for the World Cup and that were looking forward to a wonderful tournament in Germany, but we had no other choice. We are currently considering the next World Cup to be in 2008, but that would of course also affect the time schedule of the European Championship."

According to German politicians, the main reason for cancelling the World Cup is the bird flu, which is spreading more and more all over Germany, but rumor has it that there are other things that affected that decision as well. One of them is said to be recent gambling scandals among German referees and also players.
A journalist from the German newspaper "Bloed" said he even had information that German national head coach Juergen Klinsmann supported the cancelling of the
World Cup, as he would fear that the German team might show a disappointing performance. He is not yet ready for a statement.

This is the saddest day in the history of soccer...
