The 2011 MLB Thread

Maybe I haven't been paying attention to the season as closely as I should be,but how in the hell is Paul Konerko not in the starting line up for the All Star Game?!

I agree.
I think he is now the last one to be voted in for the AL, but he should have started.

Whats up with the Home Run players? Ryan Howard is not in there and yet Rickie Weeks is.

R.I.P. Rangers fan who fell over LF wall behind scoreboard in the second inning of the A's Rangers game on July 07. I watched the thing and I had a bed feeling about the man. My heart and prayers go to the family.

You never lost the card as far as I'm concerned. What an awful loss by my ChiSox, they're just so inconsistent. It's so frustrating to watch this team. At least Paulie is going to the ASG.

Well if it's any consolation your team is the first in MLB history to have had the honor of playing against Joe Mauer, the 1st baseman. Could the beginning of something great the way he looked playing D.

great day for jeter. gets his 3000 (which was a homer), had a 5 hit day and best of all had the game winning hit. no feels better than winning.

Well the best pitcher in the game right now will not pitch in the All-Star Game. Verlander is starting against KC today and won't be eligible to pitch Tuesday.

 to Derek Jeter for reaching 3000. Even having a terrible year has not diminished the class that has been his calling card since coming to the bigs.

I hate to disagree but i wouldn't call Verlander the best pitcher in the game. Weaver, Jurrjens, Hamels, Beckett and Hallaway have similiar if not a better season than Verlander.

So much for the AL winning home field in the WS. The league's best pitchers won't be playing. Instead, they're bringing up some AA talent that'll have the fans screaming for more...

CC got his 13th win most in the league and i don't think he got invited to the all-star team. how about that?
CC Sabathia was selected today finally for David Price. He wouldn't be pitching since he pitched today, and so, he chose not to go. Just like his other teammates, Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, and Mariano Rivera who also are not going. David Robertson, the setup man to Rivera, is going to Phoenix instead. It will be his first All Star game.

Blue Jays pitcher Ricky Romero is headed to the all star game as a replacement.

Neat.

Holy Shit!!!! I do believe the end of days is actually upon us! At the All-Star break....my Pittsburgh Pirates are 4 games over .500, 1 game out of 1st place (if they could have scored some runs against Washington in some of those losses....they'd be in 1st)...AND they actually have 3 guys going to the All-Star game (Hanrahan, McCutchen, and Correia)! They have a manager that actually has a pulse (Hurdle.....vs. the ZOMBIE they had before that). Some of the decisions they have made since they have had the new management team in place (in fairness....McClatchy and his boys fucked things up soooooo bad that it took some time to get things even remotely corrected) are FINALLY coming to fruition. They are playing before sellout crowds at PNC Park. They actually have some of their better offensive players on the DL right now (Alvarez, Doumit, Tabita, Snyder...note their two starting catchers) AND still they are 4 games over. Their pitching has been ROCK SOLID! Fuck, if my Pirates aren't the feel good story of the 1st half at least....I don't know what is!

Yes my friends, there is a team that plays baseball at the confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers where the Ohio River is formed.....and their name is the Pittsburgh Pirates....and hey, at least this year anyway....they're not half bad!

I feel bad for them and this might be their year. Last time the Pirates had a winning season was in 1992. I remember for the longest the tampa ray were really bad. then they started winning a couple of years ago. it shows you can build with the farm system. you just need to find a few solid young guys.

Take it from someone who has grown up watching the Blue Jays and the Expos: the end of the season is what counts.

That's exactly right. When the new management team came in....the Pirates' farm system was TOTALLY devoid of major league caliber talent basically. This is basically their 6-8th rebuilding effort following the NL East Title in '92....and it would appear that, at least as of right now anyway....they did it the right way. Too often in the past, they would bring in a few overpriced and undertalented bums as free agents and wondered why it didn't work.

Anyway, I was actually at the last home playoff game in Pirates history against the Braves back in '92...they won that game...but lost the series. The SAD thing is that, though I'm not really a drinker anyway...never have been....I wasn't even legally allowed to drink back in '92....that's how long ago it was. Ha ha ha! As bad as things have been....it's just nice to see them actually in contention beyond April....SERIOUSLY!

Oh I hear you there. I'm not delusional by any stretch....BUT, it is nice to hear them talking about bringing in a bat (if the price is right) at the trade deadline...as opposed to the annual fire sale. And, the one thing that weighs in the Pirates favor for staying in contention this season is the fact that the NL Central isn't exactly the toughest in the League. If we were still in the NL East....then I'd like our chances a whole lot less. As bad as they've been.....for me, I'm just enjoying the Hell out of it as long as it lasts....and hoping against hope that we're in contention for the long haul. If the solid pitching stays in tact.....and the bats can come around....that is very doable. Then again....those are two IMPORTANT ifs. Like I said....remaining rational! Ha ha ha!

By the way....what happened to the Expos back in '94, with the team they had.....and the record they had when the plug was pulled on the season....that was CRIMINAL!!!!!!! Needless to say, that's basically what killed the Expos! And that's sad! After that season, they had a huge fire sale and lost a lot of that core group of talented players....some of which even offered to take less money to stay....because the felt cheated back in '94 and wanted another run at it. I actually grew up in the Harrisburg, PA area....that was home to the Expos AA team (still home of the Nats AA team)...so I was familiar with a number of the players from Harrisburg. I've actually been to several Expos games up in Montreal & I was actually one of the ones who was sad to see them go.

What division were the Expos in back then?

The Fact that the Pirates are relevant at the All-Star break is important for Baseball.

i Believe the Expos of 94 played in the NL East.

will the A's finally realize the season is done for them and rebuild and give the younger guys more chances?

Don't even get me started on what happened in '94. I have always been and always will be a Blue Jays fan first, but I loved the Expos as much as anyone and I always thought it was fucking bullshit that the one season the World Series is cancelled for, it is when a down-on-its-luck franchise was going to win it. Three World Series in a row in Canada would have been amazing and if it had happened, Strasburg would be wearing one of those sweet tri-coloured hats right now. Makes me sick as a fan to not have seen the Expos leave, but for the league to have had such a major role in it.

I wasn't actually talking about '94, though. I was thinking about the 2003 season when the Expos were right in the middle of the wild card hunt at the end of summer only to end the season way back. No one remembers the fact that the Expos had plenty of competitive seasons in their history... at the end of the day, they were always an also-ran, and that's how people will always remember them.

Red had it right; NL East.

Yeah, '03 was when the League was running the team and "shockingly" the other owners who were competing against the Expos for a playoff spot decided not to make any deals at the trade deadline to bring anyone in to give them that extra push at the end of the season (that teams in contention traditionally do). Now actually, I remember the days when the Expos wer VERY competitive in the 70's and 80's....the days of Rusty Staub, Tim Wallach, Tim Raines, Andre Dawson, Gary Carter, Steve Rogers, Bill Lee, oh I could go on and on. But, the Expos and my Pirates were in the same division (the NL East), so I was always aware of them. Though I was just a kid back then, I still remember my Buccos "just" edging out the Expos for the division back in '79 (last time my Pirates won the Series). I believe they lost a 1 game playoff to the Phillies the next season for the Divison also. Back then they were drawing nearly 2 million fans a season easy. But, you are right, most people only remember the final years when they played before crowds of 6-7,000 a night and they were basically fledgling on the field as well. Of course Jeffrey Loria (the weasel from New York that now "conveniently" owns the Marlins) had a lot to do with that....then MLB put the finishing touches on doing them in.

Who in Montreal (what Frenchman) wants to watch baseball? This is an an American construct. Sometimes I wonder why I watch it, but my Twins are such a fuckin baddass club it's hard not to watch them. ;)

PS: We WILL win the AL Central. Best believe.

My Cardinals should be battling it out with the Brew Crew for the central. The Pirates have been a very nice surprise but I think they will fade soon! Great season in baseball so far!

mets traded krod to the brewers because they didn't want to pay him 17.5m next season if he reached the games finished clause. the brewers paid him an extra 500k to make the option mutual. couldn't the mets done the same and given krod 500k and have a decent closer. i guess the trade of krod means the mets are giving up on their season contrary to what management has been trying to say.
