Remakes

So many remakes in the past years. As if originals were not good enough...

King Kong, War Of The Worlds, etc

What is your opinion on remakes?
What are the remakes you would love to see made?
Which remakes were worthy to see?
Which remakes were a ******** to the original?

I dont like remakes personally, Ive yet to see one that Ive actually enjoyed. All they offer most of the time is a feast for the eyes in way of advanced special effects. Most often all that does it make up for a wafer thin attempt to replicate the original quality of the first script.

Curious you mention War of the Worlds, one of my least favourite remakes I'm sorry to say I paid to see at the cinema. The tacky special effects of the original, occasionally hammy script made it what it was, an original unduplicateable sci fi classic. While the new one did dazzle us with great effects and to its credit an authentic sense of fear about the whole ordeal. (I hated his **** and thought far to much of the movie was spent running away!)

I assume remakes of Asian movies count as well?

Remakes are just a proof that those guys at Hollywood lack the skills to come up with something new. Some movies where better on their first release.

As a horror fan i would like to see a remake of *****'s play or the Leprechaun, would be cool if they leave out the funny elements and focus on making a "scary" horror film. I loved the *****'s play movies but after part 3 it went downhill. The Goonies a movie i just seen recently would be a good movie for the holidays, not necessary a remake but maybe a second part. For some titles that aren't horror.
Mohabbatein ( Hindi romantic movie ) a USA remake of this movie leaving out all those long walks in the grass with trees popping out of nowhere and the awful dress code would be a good movie to share with you girl.

King Kong, as you mentioned in your post was not all that bad however i never seen the original.

A lot remakes didn't do as well as i expected but one missed call hit the rock, that was just one big fail.

I actually enjoy remakes, I didn't always, but I have new found appreciation for them. I don't see anything wrong with them because honestly remakes have been around since before the 1950's. It's just that it only seems like we're getting a lot more of them than before. My favorite remakes have to be The Ten Commandments, King Kong (2005), The Bourne Identity, The Blob, The Thing, and The Mummy. King Kong (1976) and The Fog remakes have to be the worst remakes I've ever seen. Some remakes I'm looking forward to seeing are Friday the 13th, Clash of the Titans, Robocop, and *****'s Play.

Don't know if it counts, but the Terminator TV series is kind of dull. Nothing much seems to happen, give me the first two films any day. :wave2:

What are the remakes you would love to see made: none for me.

those further questions would be too much work to me to answer. so i keep just 3 movie names for each question (which may gives more aspects about my personal taste than an idea how this whole remake thing has to be answered wisely)

Which remakes were worthy to see: battlestar galactica (series), the thing, war of the worlds
Which remakes were a ******** to the original? king kong (jackson & 70s), the fog, the day the earth stood still

at least, summer glau is a cute piece of candy. :) but the series, so far i've seen it (season 1, up to episode 7), isn't good. bad casting in case of john connor. and more disappointing: bad storytelling.

I find very few remakes to be better than the original. A couple of exceptions are Ocean's 11 and the Maltese Falcon. I'll add the remake of Amityville Horror as well.

I happen to like Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and I think the storytelling is just fine.

Yes, Ocean's Eleven. I knew I'd seen a good remake, but couldn't remember what. I also recall a space film, like Apollo Thirteen or something, can't remember that one either though. :wave2:

For the love of God I hope you aren't thinking of 2010:The Final Odyssey :(which was a appalling remake of 2001: A Space Odyssey

Kubrick's genius should have never been defiled in such a manner.

Just throwing some titles (and my opinion):

The Good/Interresting: King Kong. Ocean 11, Cape Fear, Charlie And The Chocolate Facory, Planet Of The Apes

The Bad/********: Solaris, Psycho. War Of The Worlds, Invasion Of The Body Snatchers, Little Shop Of Horrors

I think remakes are great as long it makes sense to have one. Remaking certain movies can make them even better, especially if the movie had a lot special effects. The advancements in technology add to the realism. I just wish they would stay true to the original story. It's a remake not a sequel.:yinyang:

occasionally foreign films remade can be good, because they don't really change anything except the language and cultural idiosyncrasies. so it's really more akin to editing than making a whole new film.

I can't really think of any off the top of my head.

PS. 2010 is a sequal to 2001, not a remake. I'm not sure on the order, but I know there were at least two other books in the series after the original novel.

PSS. the books were:
2001: a space odyssey
2010: odyssey two
2061: odyssey three
3001: the final odyssey

King Kong was a disaster. Jack Black's dialogue deliver, although I like him generally, was really bad at times. He was rather unfit for the character. Imagery and camera work was disturbingly similar to that of Lord of the Rings trilogy.

War of the Worlds was not bad, though. It was very close to the original novel yet with innovations to the original movie.

Get Carter with Stallone was a movie which was a lot better than the original one with Caine.

I generally do not like remakes as in my opinion they indicate the lack of creativity of filmmakers.

:2 cents:

question to those who didn't like the war of the worlds remake:

was it:
[ ] because of this scientology dickhead tom cruise
[ ] because of the screaming ********
[ ] because of spielberg was director
[ ] because &%§!!!*) hollywood production
[ ] because all of that
[ ] something else (please describe in short)

I stand corrected. 2010 was a sequel. 2 hours of my life I will never get back.
