Bay State School Bans Tag, Other Chase Games
Principal Concerned About Students' Safety

ATTLEBORO, Mass. -- An Attleboro Elementary School is playing it safe. The school has ****** tag and a number of other popular games from the playground.

That's causing controversy.

NewsCenter reported that the Willett Elementary School in Attleboro ****** tag and it has upset a number of parents and students.

"It's a time when accidents can happen," Principal Gaylene Heppe said.

Heppe included the new rule as part of a standardized set of playground rules.

Survey: What Do You Think Of Tag Ban?

The Willett School is one of several schools in communities across the country where similar bans have been adopted. ******** are no longer allowed to play tag, touch football or dodgeball during recess. All unsupervised chasing games have been ****** because the Heppe is worried about safety and inappropriate touching.

While no district-wide policies banning contact sports at recess appear to have been put in place locally, many principals are making up new rules in an atmosphere reflecting society's increasingly cautious and litigious nature.

A few years ago, school administrators in the Attleboro area about 40 miles south of Boston, as well as around the country, took aim at dodgeball, saying it was an exclusionary and dangerous game. Modified versions now include softer balls and ways for ******** to re-enter the action.

Schools in other cities in the country have cited the risk of ******** getting injured on the playground and the fear of subsequent lawsuits. In Charleston, S.C., touch football has also been ******. In Spokane, Wash., and Cheyenne, Wyo., tag has also been ******.

Parents' reaction to the rule was mixed.

"I think that it's unfortunate that ****' lives are micromanaged and there are social skills they'll never develop on their own," said Debbie Laferriere, who has two ******** at Willett. "Playing tag is just part of being a ***."

However, Celeste D'Elia, another Willett parent, said her *** feels safer because of the rule.

"I've witnessed enough near collisions" in the playground area, D'Elia said. "I support anything that makes the playground safer and helps teachers to keep track of them."
