North Korea/South Korea

They should just bring back the draft now. I know I'm getting drafted. FWIW, is it just me or is the rest of the world a bunch of pussies (or is it that America just can't help but 'police' the rest of the world)? Sheesh, it seems like it's America America America when it comes to dealing with tyrants. And, of course, we get the blame in the end, when we do help our allies.

i'm not convinced all out war is inevitable. they've been doing shit like this since the cease fire in 1953.

technically they're still at war. no peace treaty was ever signed in the '50s.

although if we'd just let MacArthur nuke North Korea when he wanted to we could have avoided those crazy little bastards all these years.

Absolutely nothing is going to happen. The US will send North Korea an angry letter and everything will quiet down for another six months before North Korea acts out again.

Gee, I can't wait to read Trident's comment on this, though.

Why save the world, when you can rule it?
I'm not Korean. Just a yank that has been living or working off and on in the land of the morning calm for far too long.

Thanks though...
Oh, you're a yank? In that case...
DEATH TO AMERICA! ALLAH HU SNACKBAR! JIHAD BE UPON YE! lol...

South Korea shouldn't allow the North to get another hit in before they decide to fight back. They should decimate a North Korean city and any factories building warfare artillery as a clear message about attacking another country.
Decimate a city? You loco boy? What possible military objectivers could that fulfill if there are no war facilities in that city?

Better than doing nothing and sitting back before something worst comes their way. At least it shows they won't mess around with this little NK midget instigator. Since when should a country sit back and say if this happens again you'll be sorry. Worst than a woman who stays with an abusive husband and keep saying she will leave if it gets worse or if it continues.

I do believe North America should stay out of it for the most part. Unless of course the missiles should hit one of our bases over there. Then we can step in and take care of this North Korean gargoyle.

Supposedly, South Korea has unofficially declared war. We'll have to wait and see I guess.

As someone already mentioned there has never been any peace treaty so the war has never officially ended although in reality it ended in 1953 but any escalation in violence from either side would be hard to punish or condemn from a legal point of view.

More here plus a little history (although it does go back a bit further to the Japanese Empire and WWII) of the conflict for those who don't know
BATTLE OF THE TWO KOREAS: AN UNRESOLVED CONFLICT

The area became a Cold War flashpoint when on June 25 1950, communist North Korea invaded South Korea sparking the three-year war which involved a United Nations force defending the South.

Initially a 'police action', UN forces led by General Douglas MacArthur, below, including thousands of British troops, were drawn in to bitter fighting as the war escalated.

The North Korean capital of Pyongyang was lost to US troops in late 1950 before the South's capital Seoul was taken by the North in 1951 as China intervened on its behalf.

Seoul was later regained and the rest of the war remained largely a stalemate until the 1953 Armistice but the two nations have never officially made peace.

If a war begins on the Korean peninsula, America doesn't stand a chance. Maybe Obama needs to speed up the return of troops from Iraq and Afghanistan, so that they can be redeployed in Korea...for their seventh tour. Looks like, if this escalates, the draft might be...you know...

North Korea has become like a jerky child that thinks they can get away with whatever they want because their parents never seriously punish them, and essentially they end up being right. With no serious repercussions for their actions (and when I say serious I mean serious and not the play baby stuff that has been done up to now) what's their incentive for stopping?

Hmm it would be unwise for the US and China to meddle in this, they have bigger worries (each other).
Hower, victory would either side would mean big changes in the regional balance of power. When North Korea wins, Japan will be in direct danger and either way ask for instant US help (which will drag the US in). Alternatively, when South Korea wins, the Chinese will have a country which is suitable for containing China directly at their borders.

Besides that, I don't think it'll turn out to be big. NK and SK have so much to lose, they are almost equally powerful. They will only fight with assistance from a bigger force I think.
This is just some muscle felxing before the new leadership takes over in NK. Kim will have to make a nice introduction for his son right?

Don't worry, the US is spending just as much on defense as the rest of the world combined. (A few years ago it was just as much as the next 20 countries or so, but because of all the little insignificant states and the lower end of the spectrum it now it literally 50% of the world share.)
Oh... and rising. And you have the stopping power of water on your side, lot's of water.

 Move along. Nothing here. We have no money and troops to do anything. We have no financial interest (i.e. OIL LUST) in this part of the world.

I would recommend to our South Korea friends to try diplomacy. It's cheaper.

Exactly. Only this child has the potential to kill millions of innocent people in a matter of hours. Kind of hard to punish a kid like that.

The real losers of this attack is North Korea's starving public. The food situation is bad this year and this ensured that the last stream of food aid will be cut off. China provides some, but not enough to prevent a famine.

Maybe, but even in a metaphorical way I don't negotiate with terrorist. I will not let somebody hold something, even something as potentially dire as that, hostage over me. Even if there might be repercussions I'm wouldn't let myself get pushed around by a country like them or let them just get away with what they want at the expense of my people's lives over and over again. Once they know there is nothing stopping them or even just punishing them on a practically useful level they won't quit.
