i think the hawks could take it all this year. pitsburgh is already plagued with injuries. if only that team could stay healthy i dont think there is another team that could keep up with them

It's way too early to see who might emerge. Look at Montreal and New York last season....no one would have picked them to go far in the playoffs. The Hawks certainly have the talent but we'll see how things go. They couldn't beat the Kings last year and neither could anyone else.

It is also notable that Colorado finished in first place in the West Central Division but got rubbed out by Minnesota as well so surprises aplenty in the SC playoffs. It's part of what makes the NHL so great IMO.

On a side note, we need to pay homage to one of the classiest and most talented players of his era, Jean Beliveau, who passed away on Tuesday. Beliveau was the epitome of an NHL centerman back in the 1960s and early '70s. Here's a poignant reference to his greatness from the perspective of another one of the great Montreal player from that period, Yvan Cournoyer:

Those Canadien teams were dynastic in those days and some of the greatest players to ever lace up the skates played for them. Beliveau was the captain and leader of those teams and what a legend he was. The teams that he played on won an unbelievable 10 Stanley Cups! R.I.P. Jean.....

Beliveau may not have been the first name you thought of with those teams, but he was always in the mix. Well said, Jagger. Not much buzz about the Lightning right now, from what I have seen , but they are solid. A lot of sold players, rolling out the lines and scoring goals. Bishop in net is solid, not spectacular, but always solid. Hopefully, last year's first round debacle is a motivating force for them.

Sweet comeback win at home last night for my Blues against our longtime nemesis and defending Stanley Cup champs, the LA Kings. After spotting the Kings a 2-0 lead in the 2nd, the Blues scored 5 unanswered goals (including 3 in a 2 1/2 minute span) in the 3rd period to storm back and win their 5th game in a row. Budding superstar Vladimir Tarasenko led the Blues charge with a hat trick (one an empty-netter but hey that counts as a goal, right?) and an assist while Jake Allen stopped 21 shots between the pipes. Not much time to gloat since we travel to LA tomorrow for a repeat performance on the back end of a home-and-home set against the Kings. Should be a great one....I know I'll be watching.

Bump

Is there no interest in continuing this thread? What a shame....we used to have so many hockey fans on here. I feel like Smallville for God's sake!

Les Canadiens are heroes! They did lose to Buffalo tonight, which is shameful, but heroes nonetheless. Carey Price should win the Hart Trophy. I'm serious about that. He's among the league leaders in shots faced, his team is among the league's worst in terms of scoring and on the power play and their leading scorer (Max Pacioretty) is only 33rd overall in league scoring and yet they're one point behind Tampa Bay for the division and conference lead (with two games in hand, I might add).

P.S. I don't post about hockey much these days because it hurts to watch my Oilers. Actually hurts to watch.

P.P.S. I can watch this though:

Eberle makes Patrick Marleau, Brent Burns, AND Antti Niemi his pylons on this one!

The Blues showed incredible grit when they came back from a 1-0 deficit late in the 3rd to win at home against Tampa Bay 2-1 in OT for their 6th consecutive victory last night. Brian Elliott was magnificent in goal, stopping 30 of 31 SOG and Vladimir Tarasenko and Jaden Schwartz both scored highlight reel goals to take it away from big Ben Bishop and the Lightning. The Blues played like shit for 80% of the game and then turned it around at the end. What a plus it is to be able to win games when you aren't at your best. The fact that we are doing this without Berglund, Lehtera or Shattenkirk just shows how much deeper this team is that in years past. Next it's on the road for 2 back-to-back games at Buffalo and Columbus before we return home for a Sunday afternoon nationally-televised showdown with the Hawks at Scottrade.

Blues on a serious roll as they net at least a point in their 13th straight game (12-0-1 over that stretch) as their young developing players continue to show their emergence. Dmitri Jaskin scored the game winner and both Vladimir Tarasenko and Jaden Schwartz chimed in with a goal apiece as goalie Jake Allen stopped all 23 Buffalo shots in a 3-0 whitewash of the Sabres on the road last night. No time to savor the win as tonight we lace 'em up against the Blue Jackets in Columbus before heading back to St. Louis to meet the Blackhawks on Sunday afternoon. What a race for playoff position in the West as Nashville, Anaheim and the Blues open up just a bit of daylight between themselves and their rivals as we head into the final 30 games of the season.

wtf is wrong with the canadian teams?

Ummmm, four out of the seven Canadian teams are in the playoff picture right now and Montreal is four points back of Tampa Bay with three games-in-hand for the lead in the East... I don't know what you mean by this question...

Yeah, I agree. It's great to see Calgary and Winnipeg be relevant again and I look forward to the day that we can say the same thing about Edmonton. The Oilers' management has done a poor job of bringing in the right kind of talent IMO....too many players with similar skills and not enough complimentary and role players to make it work. It's s shame because there is a lot of talent on the roster but the sum of the parts don't seem to work well together. What's the attitude of the fans and media up there, Rod? Any hope for the future? Any rumors that the franchise might be considering relocation?

Bruins on TV twice this weekend. Isles on Saturday. Okposo out hurts NYI. Bergy vs. Tavares. Looking for Lucic to come up big. Sunday, the Habs will take on the Bs and eke out some shitty win via a lucky bounce.

Relocation is not gonna happen. There is a new arena currently being built (and from the looks of it it will be truly state-of-the-art) and this is Edmonton. The people bleed copper and blue. The fans will never go away no matter how bad the team is and no matter how long they're bad for. But therein lies part of the problem. The fans are dissatisfied (to say the least), but the organization doesn't feel that the way they should because ticket sales and merchandise sales are a constant. The building sells out even when the team is out of the playoffs by mid-November (as they were again this season). Honestly, if the fans want to send the organization a message they should stop buying tickets until the product is worth the price. I have stopped watching the Oilers. I haven't been to a game this season and I don't watch them on TV. And I'm as die-hard a fan of the Oilers as there is. Part of why I've chosen to stop watching is to send that message, but it's also because it truly hurts to watch this team play. There's no heart, no grit, no work ethic, no structure, and NOBODY on the ice, behind the bench, or in management cares.

To put into perspective how dissatisfied Oilers fans are, there's an online campaign called "Kevin Lowe has to go" and tonnes of people have subscribed to it and it's raised money to produce bumper stickers and advertisements in the city saying "Kevin Lowe has to go." I'm one of the subscribers. Kevin Lowe has done an absolutely pitiful job throughout his years in the Oilers head office. He is terrible at it and he needs to go. But he's not the only problem (although I do believe that it starts at the top with him and the rest of management); we don't have a SINGLE player on our active roster that WE drafted later than the first round. Yeah, Eberle, Hall, and Nuge are good with the potential to be stars, but they were all first-round picks (with Hall and Nuge both being first overall). First-round picks aren't that hard (and first overall is even easier). That just goes to show how terrible our scouting is. Our GMs have all been bad and made terrible moves (including our current GM, Craig McTavish, whom I LOVED as our coach years back). And then we haven't had good coaches with appropriate systems and it all trickles down to the guys on the ice.

This organization right now is breeding losers and fostering losing. The organization needs a COMPLETE overhaul and it should start with management. But it should include scouts, coaches, and players too. No one should be untouchable. People often look at Pittsburgh and Chicago as examples of teams who built championships through the draft, and to a large extent that's true, and it's been expected that the Oilers would do that as well with all of our high draft picks, but not every draft has a Crosby/Malkin/Fleury or a Kane/Toews. It's not even anywhere close to a guarantee that a decade's worth of drafts will have even one guy like that, so you can't just rely on first overalls, you have to scout properly and find guys in later rounds or even undrafted guys (like Mark Giordano, Dan Boyle, Sergei Bobrovsky, Jonas Hiller, Tyler Johnson, Antti Niemi, Martin St. Louis, etc.). We haven't done that and the people who are in place right now aren't capable of doing it.

Anyway, that's my rant for now, but it's hard to really explain what it feels like to be an Oilers fan right now. On the rare occasions where I've caught part of a game or some highlights, seeing them play poorly, or lose, or get scored on just doesn't make me feel anything anymore. My feelings are dead... it's a terrible thing.

i guess i mean toronto. what the fuck is wrong with toronto.

Same thing that's been going on for decades. They should be used to it by now.

but it is now finally getting to the point that fans are actually not buying things and it is starting to hurt the financial bottom line for the franchise. maybe finally some changes can happen
