My dad works for Homeland Security as a computer specialist for the NE region of the United States. My dad is nowhere near as "important" as the President of the United States of America. Even so, my dad had a thorough background check performed on him before he was even interviewed and considered for his job. Finances, personal relationships, loans, credit history, arrest record, etc. The United States government knew more about my father after a few days of research than his wife of 10+ years did.

If the government is that thorough about checking the background and validity of a computer specialist who (with no disrespect to my own father) isn't important at all, I can't even imagine what kind of knowledge and validation they have on United States Senators. Especially those who are running for the President of the United States of America.

If Barack Obama wasn't eligible to run for President, the Democratic party would've known about it years ago and wouldn't have wasted MILLIONS and MILLIONS and MILLIONS and MILLIONS of dollars campaigning an ineligible candidate for office.
