'Duck Dynasty' Star Phil Robertson Suspended From Show

I just looked at Google News and the Bing News feed. Phil Robertson/Duck Dynasty is at the top of both pages. I have entertainment news restricted from my Reuters feed or he'd probably be on there too, I'm sure. Who says this isn't an amazing country? Only in America can a nobody, with limited talents and skills, with nothing to say, become a media sensation and rich. See, anywhere else, the Kardashians, D@nica Patrick, S@rah Palin, P@ris Hilton, Phil Robertson, the Jersey Shore fools and those Real Housewhores people would be pushing brooms or asking if the guy on the mic wanted fries with his order. But here, we make them rich and listen to what they have to say as if they knew anything. Our ******** can't read and write, do math or understand what gravity is... but as long as you can get rich by making a monkey out of yourself, why does any of that matter??? :dunno:

On the same wavelength, I kind of had a hope that the current crop of trash reality TV would be eliminated with this latest idiocy, but alas it would seem trash is with us to stay. It is rather remarkable shows like Duck Dynasty, Moonshiners, Honey Boo-Boo, even the likes of Big *******, Survivor and ********* Apprentice continue to thrive while shows of quality or even actual educational shows have become a thing of the past. It sucks to watch once quality networks like The History Channel, A&E and The Discovery Channel - channels once staples in my viewing pleasures because of their intellect - become populated by pure trash.

Again, I think THIS is the big question. No matter how a person feels about this reality TV show (I personally **** the entire genre) or this Phil person, to say that this has anything to do with freedom of speech is foolish, IMO. He has exactly the same ability and right to say today what he said the other day. His rights have not been infringed.

As for the various terms used to describe people from certain groups or regions of the country, I remember coming home for a visit after I got out of business school many moons ago. And one of my friends said that since I had an MBA, I could no longer be a "hillbilly", I was now a "hill william". I found that amusing. Just like with a lot of other terms, if you're a member of the group, then you have more latitude in using certain terms and not offending other members of that group. In that case, people assume that the context is more innocent or playful. As for the claim that was made that "hillbilly" is a racist term, no, it's not. I've heard Black people from West VA, Kentucky and Tennessee referred to as hillbillies too. It includes pretty much anybody that lives in the southern Appalachian mountain region. And I've heard Black people from the deep south referred to as "bamas". A Black girl I used to work with in the Maryland office used to refer to her boyfriend as a "bama". Since he was from Georgia and not Alabama, I didn't get that. But she said it was a catch-all for anybody (Black) from "down south". Coming from her, he laughed it off. But if I'd called him a "bama", he might have taken a swing at me. And if he'd called me a "hillbilly" or a "ridgerunner", I might have swung on him. See, we didn't know each other like that.

"Redneck" is a different sort of term. Yeah, in my experience it primarily applies to Whites - though I guess there could be an Asian redneck or a Cholo redneck or a Black redneck. :dunno: So I'd say it is racial, but not necessarily racist. "Redneck" usually applies to people (White) who display a lack of social skills and manners and who pride themselves on being uneducated, vulgar, uncouth, loud and/or offensive. A member of a an IndyCar team that I knew back in the 90's (who was English) used to **** going to the California Speedway because he said the area (Fontana) was surrounded by rednecks. He said the Brits had a term like that for those kinds of people too... and it had nothing to do with race (included Black, White, Asian, etc.): "Chavs".

One of the funniest bumper stickers I remember from the 2008 Presidential election was one I saw from North Carolina: "Rednecks For Obama". So just like any other term, sometimes it's embraced by the people it's directed at and sometimes it's not. Some are offended. Some aren't. But anyway, if this Phil guy was some sort of polished speaker and social butterfly, with a PhD in Philosophy, who was ********* to make a monkey or public spectacle of himself for money, they wouldn't have hired him and his clan for the show to begin with. Who would watch a bunch of normal/boring people? Reality TV fans want monkeys that can talk (though usually not standard English). Whenever these lazy networks hire these goofs, whether it's Jersey Shore, Buck Wild (I think a couple of them are dead now), Teen *** or whatever, they're taking a chance. So while I think A&E had the right to bounce him, I think it odd that anyone is surprised that A&E had to learn the hard way that water is wet and that untrained dogs will **** on your carpet.

Chav is most certainly a putdown, and it combines racial and class prejudice. As it's been written, the Chav remark is a way for liberal elites to show their contempt for working class Whites in Britain. It's acceptable or it was acceptable to make fun of poor urban Whites in Britain, while the same British liberal elites would never dream of making the same remarks about poor urban non-Whites.

Chav seems to have fallen out of favor as of late.

I have everything Directv offers, pretty much, and I never watch any reality tv.
Blue Planet, Ultimate Weapons, Bullet Points, Great Planes, UFC**, Too Cute, Pawn Stars, Built For The ****, etc...lots of shows that actually amuse and elucidate.
I usually don't watch local channels except for weather and to see who ****** who, but even without the Premium channels there are so many choices to watch 24/7...
I love Overhaulin, Fast n Loud, and a lot of the Hot Rod customizing shows, along with RFD and CMT rural info shows...horsemanship and rodeo stuff.

Being that this fellow was a hardcore Tory and he was built like a bull (he was a tire/wheel changer for Team Rahal when I met him), I'd have paid a quick $100 to be standing within 20 feet when you told him he was a British liberal elite (how do you develop these odd, convenient assumptions, anyhow???). And if you'd have done it in a bar after he'd chugged a few warm beers, I'd take it up to $200. I'm all about entertainment, ya know. :D

Lewis Hamilton (who came from a modest, working class background), said that when he was a youngster, first getting into karting, the rich **** referred to him as a Chav. And you can tell from looking at Lewis that he sure is a poor urban White ***.

I was in the Memphis airport about 10 years ago and this big goober in bib overalls comes strolling through the terminal. Everybody starts chattering, "Hey look, it's Big Tom!!!" A bunch of **** (and some adults) gathered around him to get his autograph. This was the goof that was on Survivor way back when. I'd never seen the show and I had no idea who (or what) he was. But apparently he was a big time, gen-u-**** *****-ri-tee. Over the years I've gotten autographs from Mario Andretti, Emerson Fittipaldi and a few others... mostly race drivers but I also got Dizzy Gillespie's and Jayne Kennedy's just by chance. But I think back... if I had just managed to go over and get Big Tom's autograph, I could die a happy and proud man. And how would I die? Well, I would put a .44 Magnum in my mouth and blow my fucking brains out, of course.

My contract with DirecTV is up about this time next year. I just wish that I'd had my girlfriend's boy genius nephew help me with this cord cutting exercise before we broke up. I don't play video games. I sit in front of the new plasma TV (she talked me into buying) and use the thumbs-down feature on TiVo while I mutter, "Fucking ****! Fucking ****! Fucking ****!" as I scroll through the shows. Better that I do this than wander around in public and wind up on CNN Headline News. Fucking ****!!!

British liberal elites popularized the phrase until working class members of the old Labour left started pointing out the hypocrisy of new Labour elitists aka Guardianistas mocking poor urban Whites. The same liberal elites who would be ready to blackball and destroy someone for making that same sort of putdown against poor urban non-Whites.

Thanks for your lewis hamilton anecdote.

Besides hearing the words spoken by someone I believe, I went to Google for a quick ********* of DD's status as a Reality Show giant.
Hard to believe you didn't search first...Google is so easy for first level search.

I don't see any dirt surfacing in this case...we see how low the Libbies had to go to get after the religious backwoods ******...can you imagine the dirt that could be dug up on A&E execs or GLAAD admin...R or X rated news stories, worse than the Clinton Blue Dress/Cigar Dildo/Oval Office BJs stuff.

I'm not quite sure if you're taking a jab at me or not, but regardless, I'd figured you'd already had the information handy and I really don't care enough to search for it myself.

I'm not inclined to address the jab you made at liberals either because I don't want to become part of the argument going on here, but I'll say that I don't agree with your opinion and leave it at that. Have a nice day.

Yet, the person who turned me onto the term was not a British liberal elite. So... er... there's that. ;)

Thanks for your lewis hamilton anecdote.

You're very welcome.

Seriously ***, which of us do you think is more sarcastic? Really now...

My biggest issue with this whole thing is how so many of the conservatives backing up Phil are trying to claim that A&E is being intolerant, bitching and whining about free speech and freedom of religion. No, A&E isn't being intolerant. Phil is. I've never seen Dick Dynasty and have no desire to, it looks stupid to me, but I've heard enough about this situation already to get a good idea about what's going on. He's some hillbilly with a giant ugly beard, and he made a comment about gay people being sinners. Sure, he has every right to say what he wants, but A&E also has every right to remove him from the show, just the same as you can fuck your hot co-worker on your boss's desk as much as you want, but if your boss finds out, they have every right to fire you.

I'm so sick of hearing all these religious people bitch and complain about the democrats and such-and-such person trying to take God away from them, trying to take Christ out of Christmas, trying to take God out of the pledge of allegiance, blah blah blah. Shut up already. This is a free country. You do have freedom of speech, and you do have freedom of religion. So does everyone else. Your religion should in no way whatsoever effect the person sitting next to you. Practice it on your own time, in your own way, and leave the rest of the country out of it.

Phil is the one who's intolerant, and A&E is simply not tolerating intolerance.

I agree!

Phil Robertson was a pretty good football player back in his day. In fact, he played first-string QB at Louisiana Tech ahead of Hall of Fame QB Terry Bradshaw. He also has a Bachelor's degree and a Master's in education

Did people really think this guy wasn't likely a racist before this? People should quit freaking out. If you watched his show before you were already a duped idiot.

Over three seasons, from 1965-67 -- his final two as starter -- Robertson was 179-for-411 passing for 2,237 yards and 12 TDs, but threw 34 interceptions for Tech (which was 8-20 in that span).

"Many do not believe in the Divine inspiration of scripture, that is their choice, but many do. Those of us that do believe this do not have to condone a behavior that we see as sinful, and even though we see sin as wrong, and all Christians know they themselves are sinners, can not condone an act that they believe God calls sin. In 1 Cor 6, it does not tell us to **** the sinner, rather that verse makes a very simple statement, that the sinner that lives a number of different life styles and does not repent will not inherit the kingdom of God, that is the message of that verse. In the end that is between them and God.

In chapter 5 of the same book, Paul writes of a person living the life of sexual impurity and the church is told to put that person out and not even eat with that person. plainly put we are not to fellowship with believers that do not repent, however he points out that we are not to shun the unbeliever for their sins, in fact we see in Paul's writings
that we are to give those very unbelievers the Gospel for their chance to accept and repent, if they do not that is between them and God. You see this is how we as Christians, even though we can not condone the life style of homosexuality any more than we can condone a lifestyle of sex out of marriage or adultery, or revilers, drunkards or thieves, we still love the sinner. The real problem is this, the LGBT community desires that the Christian community will give 100% acceptance of their sin, we can not do this anymore than we can do this for our own sins in which we are told to turn away from. We can love the sinner and as Christians we are charged to do that, but we are to despise the sin. So what the LGBT community will get from Christians or should get is a level of tolerance, even though they can never get approval of the lifestyle. Unfortunately as a general rule the left and the LGBT will not afford the Christian community the same.We do not demand that you believe as we do, or even accept our teachings or even condone our beliefs, we just ask for the same tolerance you would like from us.
There are programs on TV that I can't stomach such as "Modern ******", I have never asked for it's removal, I have never criticized anyone who watches it, nor called anyone names for liking the program, the fact is they say things that I personally find repulsive and disgusting. Do I scream and throw a fit when it is on...NO, I just don't watch it. Many People do enjoy DD, I would say if you do not like it, just do not watch it. If the ratings fall as low or below anything on MSNBC then A&E should drop it. But to drop a program that is the #1 non fiction show on TV, is not only a slap in the face to the viewers by not even giving them a choice to stop watching or watching, they also are disingenuous to the sponsors who should be in a symbiotic relationship with the network and the viewers. In fact the show only lives if the viewers and sponsors are treated with respect. To the point that if the sponsors continue to support the network rather than the demographic they are trying to reach it is the responsibility of the viewing demographic to cut ties with the sponsors also.

So A&E give the viewers of the number one show on your network what they want, to the sponsors if the network is no longer providing your target Market what they want pull your add dollars, if you prefer to reward the network for alienating your target market then expect your target market to alienate you. For those who do not like DD, you are not part of the Target Market, may I suggest that you do like I do (or actually don't do) do not turn it on. The rise or fall of viewer ship should decide the market."

After reading Harley's misinformed and bigoted article (You do have freedom of speech / Shut up already) this puts the situation in perspective.
ESPNaddict spewing his vitriol (Phil's a racist, etc; not a single accusation by anyone this is so, 'cept him.)Those who haven't seen an episode but call anyone on it or watching it an idiot, etc.
I just watched some of the 35 hours the slime at A&E are showing and it is a fun show with some silly moments and some not silly ones.
They made many millions before the show, so they are just getting richer as we sit here.
Good for them...they don't need A&E, so A&E is fucked. LOL Cracker Barrel , good for WalMart selling out of DD stuff.
Phil follows Scripture, he hates the sin but NOT the sinner.
Libs / Demotards like Harley and activist Gays **** the sinner as well, it seems.
