Anti-Virus Software

Don't need an anti-virus. I'm just careful on what and where I download.

Just be aware that even the safest looking sites might have been targeted by the bad guys to carry malware. You can drive safely on the roads, it helps but it doesn't provide you with complete safety. There's always the other guys.

If you mean the strict definitely of it, yes.

But most adware is tied into marketing non-sense, and some of that stuff gets sold. The real problem occurs when that data contained confidential information.

Cookies can often contain confidential information. If it's not secured well, then it can contain some rather exploiting information of a user.

Porn site are really the only major culprits of that anymore. Most major sites that deal with sensitive information encrypt their cookies server-side, but you're right, there are sites that don't.

I thought I'd post this here, since what better place to discuss Anti-Virus apps than a porn site. We all know how downloading porn seems to be the main source of virus problems, at least in my experience.

My question is, what does everyone here use? I was using AVG Free, but some sites seem to suggest the AVG software isn't as good at detecting Viruses. My previous AV software was Trend Micro, but their latest incarnation is major bloatware like Norton and McAfee.

Last night I DL'd NOD32 for a trial period of 30-days. It seems like a great package that's low on resources and gets good reviews at AV-Comparatives.org.

To be honest, I use Norton that comes with Comcast. I think it does a much better job than the Norton of the past.

There are a lot of sites that do not. It's not just porn sites. There are piss-poor coders everywhere.

For this reason I use a dedicated browser session running as a locked down user when I have to handle transactions and other commerce on-line. Heck, I do this for porn browsing too, a dedicated user with limited access and his own browser session.

Surely there's nothing wrong with being as safe as possible, but I literally can't think of a mainstream website I regularly visit that doesn't.

That's why I use Noscript, to whitelist such sites. Most well-funded sites are not coding like crap, and not loading up with adware that is not.

Then again even Google Ads just recent got hit by some privacy violating code. It's just hard to filter them out completely, even on sites you trust.

kaspersky

Kaspersky is a bit of a tecchie's tool - very fiddly, and it clamps its jaws down on everything that isn't Kaspersky. I found it to be more trouble than it was worth -a bit like owning a guard-dog that bit your house-guests! But, together with ESET NOD32, it is the best non-free antivirus.

The free AVs are OK, but they don't perform like paid AV software. As with anything else in life, you get what you pay for.

On a general point, there is no reason to believe that porn sites are more infected with viruses and spyware than any other sites. Or so my tecchie-friends advise. (This is a point already made in this thread by other contributors). Anyone know any different?

Not to threadomance, but does ESET require you to be a UK/Euro resident?

It doesn't appear to let "international" users try the free trial.

A new version of Avast (v5) is very good and free for non-commercial use. I recommend it.

We use Debian (that's a Linux distribution). My brother who's a system administrator introduced me to it some years ago and I love it. No need for anti virus programs or a firewall. It took my wife some getting used to but she now loves it as well :)

This is what I use: Avast (just fucking brilliant), together with : MalwareBytes, FF, NoScript and ABP - nothing gets through. FU malware/virus!!! :fire: :gun: :ak47:

Is Debian free? I'd like to take it for a test drive to see what you're talking about :)

Been "using" Avira Antivir Personal for about a year now. I say "using" because it hasn't actually done anything for me except d/l updates 50 times a day and constantly nag me with about it's definitions being out of date. It has failed to detect malware other programs have caught and seems to be chewing through CPU from time to time.

All that said, I'm uninstalling it. Any suggestions beyond the usual suspects (AVG, Malwarebytes, etc.) to replace this with?

Here's an article that tested all the popular free AV programs that you might like to read to help you decide what's a good fit for you:

Yes, Debian is completely free of charge as well as the software that comes with it. There's also a Debian live cd. That's basically the operating system on a cd so you can run it from the cd without installing it. If you like it you can download the installer, burn it to a cd and install it to your harddrive.
