Pucker Up Butter Cup.
Yeah i'm a A's fan and I think AA teams associated with the Yankees has a bigger salary budget than we do!!

Ah the A's, a perfect prime example. They set the precedent for a small market club being able to compete through their farm system and it was very nice to see but what happened? yeah due to free agency and excessive salaries each stud was gone one by one and you couldn't keep them :(

Exactly, its been way out of hand for a long time, and everyone wonders why the small market teams have no chance year after year?

They just said on ESPN the Angles' budget is 113M which isn't all that crazy. I was surprised it was that low after that contract.

Anyone wonder if Pujols is thinking DH somewhere down the line since he went from the NL to the AL?

Exactly all we do is groom players and then send them on their way, and when we do get a free agent its a player that is past their prime and desperate enough to sign a one year deal!

What's most ridiculous about the contract is it's length. 10 years??? Albert's best years are behind him. He'll be 32 years old next month. DH? Probably eventually....he'll be BY FAR the highest paid DH in history. Picture this....in 4 years Pujols is 36 years old, batting .278, hitting 23 HRs and driving in 81 runs....and making $25 million dollars with another SIX years remaining on his contract. Glad it will be with him wearing the halo instead of the birds on the bat. The Angels are paying for what Albert has done, not what he's going to do. His skills can only continue to diminish. I wish Albert the best and he leaves behind some really great memories for this Cardinal fan but the Angels are chumps for doing this deal if you ask me. Now the Cardinals can go out and find some middle infielders and a RH-hitting CF.

Exactly right. 10 years for a guy whose best years are long gone. That's on them. Mauer has nothing but his best years ahead and he ONLY got an 8 year deal @$23M annually. Mauer will win more batting titles and quite possibly more MVPs when he regains his form.

This deal for a has been is stupid.

Sweetness will come next year if:

A: The Cardinals make the playoffs.
B: The Angels don't make the playoffs.

:D

But, either way, good on the Cardinals for not re-signing Pujols to that contract.

As silly as it sounds, the Marlins actually offered Pujols MORE money than the Angels did....$275 million!!! Florida has no state income tax either and he turned it down??? :surprise:

Without looking at any of the details (or, honestly, any of the links yet), I am going to guess the deal breaker was a no-trade clause. The Marlins have made it very well known they will not include no-trade clauses in any deal - other wise, once the Marlins get their rings, they can trade Pujols to a schmuck team like the Pirates or Reds.

Has anyone seen the new Miami Marlins logo, it is u-u-ugly:facepalm: They fuckin' serious with this?

I just threw up a little in my mouth.

Reds are a schmuck team?? LOL....well, maybe last year they were. Anyway, comments are dead-on in addition to the fact that I believe that Pujols sees his 1B days as being limited and a move to an American League club was a preferred option. Whatever the reason, he's off to California. I wish him luck....he's a terrific player, maybe the best of our era. I'll still root for him (unless he's playing against St. Louis).

Pujols = Designated Hitter :facepalm:

Yeah, I had over looked that obvious bit, too. He still is quite a good first baseman, but skills have a tendency to deteriorate rather quickly at that age. One moment you are bashing homers, the next year, you are Dunn.

Just as well. The Florida/Miami/Dade County/Orange Marmalade Marlins need pitching more than Pujols.

Yeah man, that is fucking awful!

Breaking news....Pujols signs with Angels for 10 years/$250 million. I hate to see Albert leave but that's just crazy. I'm glad the Redbirds didn't pony up for that kind of commitment. Hope you enjoy the money Albert. You can say goodbye to any statue next to Stan the Man now.

So MLB fixed the World Series for nothing?

You'll remember A-Rod got pretty much the same exact deal when he switched to pinstripes. Garnett also got a similar deal in NBA when the Wolves signed him to a 10/$200M deal back in the day as well.

Rangers first, then the Yankees.

It ain't my money but I wouldn't have signed Pujols for 10 years. A player tends to peak in his mid to late 20s and he tends to decline once he hits 30. I'm sure he'll give the Angels a good 3-5 years but after that don't expect much.

Maybe they frontload the contract?

i believe that having Albert will make the Angels a more attractive place for free agents. you know that for last 5 years of that contract he will be the DH. but if the Angels win a couple World Series they will have spent the money well. but don't forget getting CJ Wilson for the rotation is also big.
