2008 MLB Thread

Enough about body fluids and clothing, I dont get Yahoo's headline of Webb outdueling Lincecum when Lincecum strikes out 13 and gives up 2 runs in 7 innings while Webb goes 7 gives up 3 runs and K's 8. Even though the Giants lost it was the damn bullpen, I dont see the outdueling part when the opposing pitcher threw better than you.

The Pirates are only around to send all their good players to the Yanks for their players from the scrap heap. And about the Minor League brawl, the dude who tried to throw a baseball into the opposing teams dugout and hit a fan instead should be banned from baseball. I mean how much do you suck if you cant hit a friggin dugout???? Those things are pretty big, how do you miss that and hit some lady in the stands? Id rather watch WNBA fights at least they hit the people they're trying to whack.

Reminds me of that prick Frank Francisco a few years back throwing a chair into the stands and hitting a lady in the face leaving her with a broken nose and some other injuries. I still can't believe he got off with just a couple game suspension, that prick should have been kicked out of the league, and I remember for a while they threatened to deport him.

SHould the Red Sox trade Manny Ramirez and who should they trade him to? I think they should trade him to San Fran, Tampa Bay (for prospects--the Rays ain't winning shit), or the Mets (for Carlos Beltran?)

I'd send him anywhere, to be honest. He's been a problem for 2 years, they've won enough with him in the lineup to justify the huge deal...do whatever it takes to get rid of the guy no matter where...

I don't think they should deal him if they want to win this season. Dealing him would be a strategic move to avoid his free agency, and IMO teams should not make those type of deals if they are heading for a possible playoff appearance. I think the best thing would be to keep the team intact.

If they decide to deal him, they'll have to get some significant players in return who can have an impact now since they're in a division race. So I wouldn't trade for prospects in this deal. I also don't think they should get Beltran from the Mets for him, because they already are very deep at CF and have two good defensive center fielders, and do you really want to ask Beltran or someone else to learn that left field spot at Fenway in the middle of a season? That's one of the toughest outfield positions to learn in MLB and I think Manny has become good at fielding that position.

Their decision depends on what is available. In the past, the problem has been finding enough quality players to match the value of Ramirez. That is the problem again. There are not a lot of teams shopping high-quality hitters at this point.

And finally a quote from "The Manny" himself:

I don't care where I play, I can even play in Iraq if need be.

Manny being Manny.....

With his contract nobody is going to want to pick him up, and I don't thing anybody is willing to trade what the Red Sox would probably be asking for. There’s a reason nobody picked him up when the Red Sox put him on waivers years ago.

Would they like to trade him and get something nice in return? Yes, but it's not going to happen and the Sox like senob44 said are not going to go anywhere without him. It's a joke that he pulled himself out of games and probably would have extended it if not for him being called out and taken aside. Great player, but his numbers show he MAY be on the decline, but they need him and are stuck with him anyway.

Manny in Iraq? Hes gonna have alot of ground to cover, and those Iraqis suck, Manny will never win anything with the Iraq Malikis, their record as of 7/27/08 is 23-98 (not very good).

I personally don't see Manny going anywhere. He can basically become (and at this rate will become) a free agent at the end of the season if his option isn't picked up, (which I can't see anyone but the Red Sox picking up a $20 million-plus option for a 37 year old who basically has no value other than offensively).

San Fran has nothing to offer the Red Sox (seeing as how they've made their only real trade chips Lincecum and Caine untouchable), and I think they've had their fill of one tool over 35 year old outfielders.

The Rays likewise don't need someone as old as Ramirez. They're a team built on youth and while they have the chips necessary, their most dire need is some bullpen help.

The Mets don't want anything to do with Ramirez. They tried three years ago to trade for him and they couldn't do it, and now they wouldn't want to. Beltran is at worst a three tool player, five at best, and Ramirez at this point is at best two.

This just to me shows that Ramirez is nuts. If I'm him and I'm making $20 million plus on a good team, and the team has told me they're going to pick up my option for next year for more money, my production is down, defense etc... I would just keep my mouth shut. As it stands, I fully expect him to become a free agent and simply re-sign for much much less money.

I don't think manny will be traded because he would want his contract extended and guartneed plus who would be able to stand his antics. of course never rule out the unexpected like the angels who have the talent to give boston and a crazy owner.

Exactly. But Manny can never keep his big mouth shut.

But yeah, that's what I think will happen. I figure Manny is still a valuable player at this point, but I think he'll command maybe 10-12 mil a year for two or three years and be a fairly productive #5 hitter for a few more years for whatever team decides they can afford to add a good hitter and put up with a real character (and whatever pluses and minuses come with it.)

Kudos to the Angels for the Mark Teixeira trade.
Despite having the best record in baseball they decided they wanted to get better still.

As for their crosstown rivals, well, when you've got Jones earning 9 million per home run and 1.4 million per RBI it kind of limits your flexibilty.........

If they weren't already, obivous favorites in the AL.

Lots of rentals it seems in the trade market. Lots of free agents to be getting moved around. Sabathia and Teixeira, Manny too.
