2008 MLB Thread

Reds need a win tonight. Glad to see my boy Norris Hopper back.

To bad, they are lost to the dodgers :thefinger:D

For the Second firing of the week, the Mariners fired John Mclaren. Lets hope they can turn it around. Play strong the rest of the year and come back next on the right foot.

Anyone think the Mariners gonna sign Barry Bonds after they release Richie Sexson? They sure do need some offense. If not the Giants should resign Bonds as a pitcher to take the place of Zito, he probably throws harder from the left side and he can hit. Its gonna be like Babe Ruth in Bizarro World.

Well, if the M's release Sexson, I would guess Raul Ibanez would take over at 1B for them. As for taking it so far as to sign Bonds? Well, possibly, but even with the firing of McLaren, I think Seattle may have actually already written off their season. I wouldn't expect such a big money signing. But who knows?

If Bonds has his choice I wonder if he would rather want to go to a AL team where he could DH for somebody.

The AL is exactly where Bonds would be if he came back. All he would be good for at this point is DH. But don't expect anyone to sign him because he costs too much and everybody hates his guts.

Hey nealdrox - The Dodgers can't beat the Saint Mary's girl's softball team but they own your Reds. What's up with that??

Queston about what you guys think about the DH.

Chien-Ming Wang was lost for at least 10 weeks because he injured himself running the bases a few days ago in a game against the Astros. Hank Steinbrenner then called on Selig to make the NL adopt the DH so things like this wouldn't happen.

I think just the opposite. I think the AL should drop the DH and pitchers should have to hit like everybody else. Plus it makes no sense that the two leagues have different rules.

What do you guys think? Should NL have DH? Should AL drop DH?

I was listening to the Giants radio broadcast and Jon Miller (Sunday Night Baseball on ESPN) was talking about this and saying that the Yankees should do the same thing with A-Rod. Have somebody field the ball and then give it Rodriguez to throw out the runner and if Jeter got a bum shoulder have him field it then have someone else throw it. And if the pitcher gets walked dont have go to first, go back to the dugout where its safe. Hank must think that the National League just decided to drop the DH so the pitcher could hit. Whoo go Hank.

I hate the DH rule and would love it if the AL dropped it. It makes no fuckin' sense. It's just a player who sits in the dugout and only comes out to hit. Damn bench players do more. Hank wants to complain about his pitchers getting hurt well guess what, plenty of non-pitchers get hurt running the base paths too. If the catcher has to catch and hit, the 1st baseman has to cover 1st base and hit and so on and so on and so on, then the pitcher should have to pitch and hit as well. I'm glad that the NL stuck with tradition.

I feel like this is a political topic, because as usual, I am torn here on the DH issue. I suppose that I would like it better if the DH was abolished. On the other hand, I really get a lot more excited over excess offense than good pitching. I've never been that into pitchers, it has always been position players, specifically sluggers, that have got me going. A lot of heavy hitters have had their careers extended by the availability of a DH position. I can totally see how some people would rather see another slugger bat than watch a pitcher stand there with a bat on his shoulder or God forbid wave at a few pitches.

I think if all starting pitchers could swing a bat and bunt well, I would have no problem giving up the DH, but there are a lot of guys who are an embarrassment with the bat. I do like though, how the NL rules encourage more bench guys getting into the game as pinch hitters and also I enjoy double-switches. I guess at least for now, each league with its own rules has its own nuances to offer. It seems that pitchers hit more poorly now than ever, so I don't know if the AL will ever abolish the DH.

Maybe, but this is baseball and there is always somebody willing to throw money away, and the disliking of people always seems to be a secondary concern when desperation time kicks in for a needy team.

well i like the leauge's having different rules. hell if wang wasn't hurt running the bases he would've been the next time he had to cover first. the mariners have so many problems that signing clubhouse divider bonds won't help. moving ibanez to first is one option another is putting jeff clement there.i wish i knew what happened to harang last year real good this year putrid same as erik bedard

Every pitcher in the bigs at one point in time where star players on their high school team or little league. They all have had to bat and probably were good at it. I hate the American League for one reason. The game is meant to be played with the pitcher batting. Watching the American League is like watching the NFL if the quarterback wasn't allowed to be touched.

I like it because it distinguishes the 2 different league's. Other then that it dosent bother me at all. I feel during interleague play the NL has the advantage because when playing in an NL park the NL pitchers are use to hitting where as the AL ones arent. Then when it moves to an AL park the NL gets to bat a DH which is better then a pitcher where the AL team starts its normal line-up.

I would have to agree with you on most of that. But wouldn't you agree that it is kinda exciting when a pitcher like Mike Hampton or Carlos Zambrano, who can both hit well, make an offensive contribution when it isn't expected of them?

But whether the AL drops the DH or the NL picks it up I think both leagues need to have the same rules.

Who knows MLB might change the rules on the DH. They are finally going to do instant replay on homerun calls. MLB welcome to the 21st Century.
