Look at it from a poor person's point of view: $50,000 dollars is enough to buy a car, which would allow you to stop having to take public transportation, which would be a huge change in life, which makes $50,000 bucks a life-changing amount of cash.

50k really isn't a lifechanging amount of money. Yes you could make adjustments in your life with 50k, but its not enough to make a huge impact on your opportunities. I can't afford to own a car, just like your example, and I still wouldn't see having a car as being life changing...just lifestlye changing.
