Re: Why Isn't Soccer Popular in America?

No games where the excitement is based on anticipation of an event (goal) are that popular in the US.
Americans like either constant building momentum, like NFL football and baseball or recurring gratification like basketball.

Hockey trails the other three by far but has moderate popularity, but though it's an anticipation game like soccer the elements of hitting, fighting and the speed jazz it up for a US audience.

Americans are pretty damn ignorant when it comes to a subject like this, but like I stated earlier, Europeans are pretty phuggin ignorant as to our culture as well. Just total ignorance all around, rampant.

Iceman and BSS. You should participate in the 2011-12 football thread. It would be nice to get some Americans and Canadians in there. As it's a good place to talk about football/soccer.

The sport I love

I posted in there I believe once before. Remember that game I saw 'bout 6-7 weeks ago I said would change North Americans' minds had they watched it? I can't even remember the clubs, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and it was the best game I had seen I think since the USA stellar classic in the WC last year.

Unfortunately, like a red-blooded North American, much of my time in spectator sports is geared to the usual suspects. Plus, it's just hard to get the better leagues here and the MLS is poorly marketed and lacking talent. All of our best stars are obligated to Euro clubs, for example.

I think I have stated before though that at the very top of my list of sports spectacles I hold are the World Cup and of course soccer at the Olympics. Truly the most international game on the most international stage known to mankind.

I know what you mean about the lack of money and talent. The Scottish league is the same. In England and the reat of Europe they can spend over £30 million for one player. Celtic can pay about £2 million if we are lucky and Rangers can't spend very much at all, because of their debt. That is another story I can explain to you when I'm sober though.

In America, it is because you have other sports that are bigger. I grew up watching football/soccer so i know all about it. Americans grow uo watching American football so they feel differently.

It would be nice if Every sport was World wide, but i doubt it will happen

Yeah. Maybe. You take a guy like Joe Mauer (most talented individual in North America arguably) who grew up and was all state in baseball, football and basketball (and played hockey as well), well, that individual has a few options, if you catch my drift. Joe could have been Deion Sanders part two because he was blue chip as a QB as well as....welll, he is the best catcher in baseball today and top three overall, period.

I think he took the smart route going baseball because it's so much more less contact - more room for $$$$$$$$ in his pocket.

You have to realize too that America is a lot bigger than most other Western nations and therefore has different regions with more specific likes and dislikes in sports. But mostly overall you are right, all the "major" sports are pretty much universally accepted and enjoyed in all of the states.

Re: Why Isn't Soccer Popular in America?

An Old firm game is the best experience ever. We hate each other, so the atmosphere is always crazy. Always the only games that sell out here aswell

It's quite an atmosphere. Being an american I've only been over to scotland a handful of times in my life. I've only been to one old firm game, and amazingly it was the 6-2 game. Amazing. Once you've been to an old firm game nothing else compares as far as atmosphere is concerned.

The entertainment derived from sports isn't just regulated to the game on the field, though. Neither is really that ignorant, outside of the fact that people are idiots everywhere.
If enough people in an area are excited about the local team in any sport it's more entertaining for everyone involved. Soccer has that in Europe.
The "atmosphere" like leechliar said.
There are no top level local teams in the US, though.
The speculation and discussion before and after a game isn't there - the rivalries, the traditions, loyalties and history are't there. Dads don't tell their kids about the best player when they were a kid.
There's no "Atmosphere." Those things are a huge part of what makes sports entertaining. The stakes.

I don't disagree with anything that was said here, really. Same can be said for North American sports.

I've been pretty blessed to have lived where I have though, where dumbasses are just that - dumbasses.
