Re: Why Isn't Soccer Popular in America?

Because it's an alien sport to our culture and heritage. We cast off the "yoke" of England a few hundred years ago. The game was invented by chauk-face english schoolboys. "Oh no,was i offsides?" Our Culture was and is Inherantly violent. We like to se people hitting each other at high speeds, OK? Not diving to the ground when the air from an opposing player rushes past you. Not blowing kisses to the crowd, etc.

Do you know why we changed the rules of Rugby into American football? Rugby wasn't violent enough, and in american football you can hit the opposing player even when he doesn't have the ball.

We like to see people hitting each other at high speeds. OK

But soccer can be very violent too, you know.

Any game the finishes 0-0 has no score at all. :D

American football has had this very few times, but it has happened. In the NFL, the last time was in 1943 - New York Giants and the Detroit Lions
In rugby it happens a little more often.
Field hockey.
In golf, the idea is to get 0 or less....

Re: Why Isn't Soccer Popular in America?

It seems that all of these "World vs America" threads take on a similar theme; that Americans are fat, stupid, and nationalist. I know people that go out of their way to drink imported beer, watch international sports, and basically reject everything American about their own culture and heritage. Sad, really.

Yes. :hatsoff:

More proof the rest of the world envies America! USA! USA! USA!

This. :yesyes:

Re: Why Isn't Soccer Popular in America?

The problem with Soccer is simple, there's too many people on the field. Think about it, people would be more spread out, longer passes, more 1 on 1 defense, more scoring. Americans want fast paced, high flying action. That's why the NFL's a passing league and the NBA's a circus. Imagine putting 3 more outfielders in baseball, everyone would be out minus the occasional home run and the few errors. (and walks) Boring!

If there were less men on the pitch. What would happen to Barcelona. Everything that Barcelona achieve is through short and sharp passing, no one else can get the ball.

When Barca are at their best, they are unstoppable. That is football at it's best. With less players you would not be able to do what they can do

Re: Why Isn't Soccer Popular in America?

Because it's fucking boring!

:D

Re: Why Isn't Soccer Popular in America?

My thoughts are that if you never played it you aren't really going to enjoy the spectator aspect. Also the MSM and their glorification of all the other "majors." It was real big for us hockey players though just because 1) it's fun as hell to play, and 2) it's tremendous condition for the upcoming season.

Re: Why Isn't Soccer Popular in America?

You guys that say it's "boring" are just as ignorant as the Euros who say American football is boring. You're all just a bunch of ignorant asses to me. But I'm probably more eclectic culturally than anyone else on the board, so I expect such childish behavior from you all.

Congrats...you all pretty much suck and are beneath me. :hatsoff:

Re: Why Isn't Soccer Popular in America?

Once you have played football you can really appreciate the fact that it's not boring, it's so fast paced and exciting. It's so hard to play aswell, even the fittest football players come off after 90 minutes and are covered in sweat. The length of a soccer pitch is a little bigger than that of an American football pitch, so to run up and down it for the full game is pretty tough. The Wing backs/full backs have to run down the whole pitch to support the attack and then run right up again if the opposition intercept the ball. People like Dani Alves do so much work, it's amazing

I only think American football is boring because it is so stop start. But then again I have never watches a full game, so I am in no position to judge

Re: Why Isn't Soccer Popular in America?

It's all cultural relativism. Depending on what side of the Pond you were born on, assuming you are athletic, you would gravitate to either of the two sports.

That's absolutely accurate. I was just answering the question. That is football at it's best but it's not football at it's most appealing to Americans.

Re: Why Isn't Soccer Popular in America?

The funny thing is in my experience most American kids are on a soccer team from the ages of 5 to 13. Just about every kid in southern California plays soccer. I live in Colorado now and when I run through the park in the summer I see the field littered with different soccer games going on with kids of all ages. I mean where do you think the term soccer mom came from? It’s because every kid plays soccer, and now there unemployed mom has to go to every Saturday game. Even though most kids grew up playing soccer it’s so boring to watch on TV it does not stick. They all get converted over to football because that’s a mans game.
