Why does US of A civilians call crisps chips?

Elwood70

Torn & Frayed.
I'm not jesus, and do you really think that asking why crisps are called chips, or chips not called crisps constitutes hatred?r.

When it's a thinly disguised shot at the U.S.A. then yes, I consider it hatred.

It's a feeble attempt at trolling...but considering the responses it got,I guess it was successful..

Duh..because they are chips of something....in the case of potato chips they are fried "chips" of potatoes.

Why save the world, when you can rule it?
Meh, let the americans speak whichever language they want. Just so long as they don't claim to be speaking English and thereby make a mess of our language.

What do the English call toothbrushes?

....myths.

Do you know how you can tell that the toothbrush was invented in the American south? ... Because, if it had been invented anywhere else, it would have been named a teethbrush.

Everything has its origin. You'll just have to look it up somewhere. I'm sure there's some semi-logical explanation.

I can tell you that the original potato chip was created in New York, U.S., I believe sometime in the 19th century.
Americans and Canadians call them "chips". English decided to call them "crisps" because the word "chips" was already being used.
Other countries have their own words for them...partly because they don't speak English...

a better question would be why the fuck do you brits call fries 'chips'.

Since they came from Belgium, Britain had them before they spread over here to America. So the correct question would be "Why the fuck do we Yanks call chips 'fries'".
Well actually I wonder about both. They both make slight, but not total sense.
