Re: What book are you currently reading?

I tried to read "Invisible Monsters" when I lived in Brazil. Terrible book, the characters were too contrived. I hated that book almost as much as I hated John Steinbeck's "To a God Unknown." Which is saying a lot as I think of Steinbeck as one of my favorite authors and yet its one of the worst things I've ever read.

I thought Palahniuk was a genius after reading "Fight Club" but he may be a one hit wonder.

If he was a one hit wonder, it would be with Survivor, not Fight Club. It's a good book, but it's too short and the movie version is far superior.

I enjoyed Invisible Monsters, but it was very over the top. Survivor is one of the best books I've read by any author, you should definately check it out.

After "Get Shorty" I'm going to re-read some of Joseph Wambaugh's novels. That guy writes about cops like no one else can.

Re: What book are you currently reading?

Chuck Palahnuiks new book Pygmy. I think maybe he's trying too hard to be different now. It's all through the voice of a terrorist pretending to be a foreign exchange student, and it's all in broken English, which can be very funny at times but difficult to read.

I've been waiting for that one, it sounds interesting. I didn't read his last book, Snuff, because pseudo-rotica about gross porn just doesn't sound like a good read. I also really hate phonetic dialogue of bad English, so that's two for two. Oh well, there's always next year's Rant "sequel".

I guess there's three kinds of Palahniuk readers: those whose favorite is Invisible Monsters, those whose favorite is Fight Club, and those whose favorite is Choke.

I never read IV, and I thought Choke was his worst one.

Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. You know, for being one of the so-called classics that is constantly regarded as one of the best books ever written, this book certainly sucks a lot of balls so far.

I liked Fahrenheit 451. Maybe it was just overhyped. I don't know about being "one of the best books ever written" but Bradbury is a pretty good author.

American Indian Cultural Heroes and Teaching Tales, Evenings with Chasing Bear by Kurt Kaltreider, Ph. D.

I didn't like that one either. I didn't hate it, I just thought it wasn't very deserving of it's status along side other dystopian fiction classics, such as Brave New World etc It's a decent little book, but not very memorable.

Try to find the film version, it's unintentionally hilarious :D.

Battle Cry of Freedom by James M Mcpherson

An excellent 1 volume work on the U.S Civil War

Re-reading "Common Sense, The Rights of Man..." by Thomas Paine. Should be required reading for all humans!
