Ukraine

lmao.

I remember hearing all about that "reset button" with Russia when Obama was elected. I didn't know that Hillary actually produced a reset button prop that her and her russian counterpart pushed in front of cameras. How corny is that? And that's worked out wonderfully.

In this new reset with Russia, Obama has caved on virtually every one of Putin's demands (missile defense in Poland and the Czech Republic for one) and has gotten nothing in return. Putin is clearly the alpha male in this relationship while Obama is making pleading phone calls to him.

A Washington Post (hardly a right-leaning rag) editorial states: FOR FIVE YEARS, President Obama has led a foreign policy based more on how he thinks the world should operate than on reality.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/opini...854436-a238-11e3-a5fa-55f0c77bf39c_story.html

That article is nothing but nonsense, Russia and China are not Iran or North Korea. We don't have any leverage militarily or financially with Russia or China. Europe is not going to hurt their economies by putting tough sanctions on Russia. China owns a ton of our national debt; they could really hurt the U. S. economy. I hate subpar journalism and/or incompetence, the post's editorial board didn't do their homework. The 9K720 Iskander (can be armed with a nuclear warhead) theater ballistic missile was not deployed in Kaliningrad. Obama canceled the Ground-Based Midcourse Defense in central Europe which was theoretically a threat Russian ICBMs. The current phases of Aegis Ballistic Defense System is focused medium and Intermediate ballistic missiles. The last phase of the Aegis Ballistic Defense System may include defense against ICBMs, it has not been decide yet.

Just for the record, two digits is binary. (0 and 1) That is the Base 2 counting system. If you're going to use all of your fingers and toes, that would be the Vigesimal or Base 20 counting system.

All I can do here, is quote my ex...you know what I meant!

Just for the record, I used to explain digital and analog signal to DishNetwork customers so they got why rain did or didn't pixelate their picture.
I do know binary code a bit...

China to Russia: You're putting us in a tight spot

China's instinct is to stand by its strategic partner, but Russia's intervention in Ukraine's Crimea appears to violate China's principle of strict state sovereignty.

March 7, 2014 9:17 AM

These are testing times for Chinese diplomats.

As they plot Beijing’s course through the international uproar over Russia’s intervention in Ukraine, they are torn between conflicting instincts.

On the one hand is a strong reluctance to stand with the West against Moscow – a strategic partner which never openly criticizes China. But on the other is the cardinal principle of Chinese foreign policy – non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries.

Beijing is not exactly fudging it: Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said plainly last Sunday, when the first reports of Russian armed intervention in Crimea were coming in, that “we respect the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.”

But neither has China condemned Russia’s actions; officials here equivocate when they are invited to join the Western chorus of outrage.

“China is uneasy,” says Bonnie Glaser, an Asia specialist at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington. “They cannot endorse Russia’s actions but they don’t want more tensions with Moscow, so they are not emphasizing their differences.”

It is easy to see why China is so insistent on the principle of non-interference: the government is worried about foreigners meddling in China’s own border provinces, such as Tibet and Xinjiang, where Beijing is unsure of local peoples’ loyalties.

Chinese leaders are especially displeased by the referendum that the Crimean parliament has called for March 16 to choose whether the autonomous region should break away from Ukraine and join Russia.

“That would be like Taiwan’s destiny being decided only by Taiwanese,” says Jin Canrong, a professor of international studies at Renmin University in Beijing. That would be anathema to Beijing, which insists that Taiwan – a self-governing island – is an integral part of China.

“China insists that Crimea’s fate should be decided by all Ukrainians,” explains Prof. Jin. “We will not support a Russian occupation of Crimea.”

“China’s foremost priorities, the first things they think about when it comes to interference, are Tibet, Xinjiang, and Taiwan,” adds Ms. Glaser. “The idea of a part of China deciding whether it wanted to be separate is seen as very dangerous.”

“China always looks at these situations through the lens of how they could impact their own security down the road,” she says.

That concern trumps the hard-line anti-Western rhetoric that some Chinese newspapers have adopted. Global Times, a nationalist tabloid owned by the ruling Communist Party, argued in an editorial this week that “backing Russia is in China’s interests” and that “we shouldn’t disappoint Russia when it finds itself in a time of need” because Moscow “has been resisting the eastward trend of western forces in Ukraine.”

Though this does not seem to reflect government thinking, China has been ambiguous about its attitude to the interim government in Kiev. Asked on Monday whether Beijing recognized the new government, Mr. Qin said guardedly that “judgment needs to be made based on the laws of Ukraine.”

In a telephone conversation with Russian president Vladimir Putin, Chinese president Xi Jinping said that “China believes that Russia can coordinate with other parties to push for the political settlement of the issue,” according to an account of the conversation published by the state-run news agency Xinhua. “China supports proposals and mediation efforts of the international community,” Xi was quoted as saying.

China and Russia, two neighboring giants, have their differences but are usually on the same side in diplomatic battles at the UN Security Council, where both are permanent members, along with the United States, Britain, and France, giving them veto powers.

Russia has used its veto six times since 2007. On five of these occasions, Beijing has cast its own veto alongside Moscow. Tellingly, the only time that China broke with Russia came after Russian troops invaded Georgia in 2008.

“China cannot embrace the Russian position but it doesn’t particularly want to side with the West either,” says Glaser. “So they are sitting on the fence.”

Prof. Jin puts a more positive spin on his government’s predicament. “Because of Taiwan, China would very much hate to see the division of a nation,” he explains, “but on the other hand China needs stable relations with Russia. We will try to balance these two considerations.”

Testing diplomatic times indeed.

Ukraine's Neo-Fascist Right Sector Leader Dmytro Yarosh to Run for President

dmytro-yarosh-l-leader-right-sector-movement-addresses-during-rally-central-independence.jpg

Ukraine's leader of the far-right Pravy Sektor (Right Sector) paramilitary movement Dmytro Yarosh has announced his presidential bid in elections planned for 25 May.

The ultra-nationalist movement's chairman Andriy Tarasenko said that Right Sector will also become a political party.

"Dmytro Yarosh will run for president," he said. "We are preparing for a congress, at which the party will be renamed, and we will participate in the elections in Kyiv, the elections in all local councils, towns and villages."

"We remain the leaders of this revolution. We are mobilising, we are preparing to react to foreign aggression," Tarasenko added, claiming that the movement was ready for a full-scale war with Russia.

A leading figure in the 2014 Ukrainian revolution, Yarosh advocated a "national revolution" during the protests and dismissed ousted Viktor Yanukovich's administration as an "internal occupational regime".

Yarosh, who considers the far-right Svoboda "too liberal", wants to ban both the former ruling party (Party of Regions) and the Communist Party of Ukraine.

Tarasenko distanced the movement from the pro-EU government led by interim president Oleksandr Turchinov.

"There has been no reset of power. Only the names in the government offices have changed," he was quoted as saying.

"Our struggle is entering a peaceful phase, a political phase and that is why we are going into politics," he said.

Russia opened a criminal investigation against Yarosh for incitement to extremism and terrorism.

Right Sector was condemned by the US State Department for "inflaming conditions on the streets".

In an interview with Time magazine, Yarosh revealed that the ultra-nationalist movement had amassed a lethal arsenal of weapons.

The movement's ideology, which rejects any foreign influence over Ukraine, borders on fascism, according to reports.

"For all the years of Ukraine's independence, Russia has pursued a systematic, targeted policy of subjugation toward Ukraine," Yarosh told Time. "So of course we will prepare for a conflict with them."

Former Defense Secretary Robert Gates pushed back on Sunday against conservatives who’ve blamed President Obama’s “weak” foreign policy for Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision to invade Crimea.

Appearing on Fox News Sunday, Gates dismissed arguments that Obama’s handling of the conflict in Syria or his efforts to trim the defense budget emboldened Putin, arguing that the Russian president also invaded Georgia during the George W. Bush administration.

“My own view is, after all, Putin invaded Georgia when George W. Bush was president. Nobody ever accused George W. Bush of being weak or unwilling to use military force,” Gates, who served as Defense Secretary for Presidents George W. Bush and Obama said. “So I think Putin is very opportunistic in these arenas. I think that even if — even if we had launched attacks in Syria, even if we weren’t cutting our defense budget — I think Putin saw an opportunity here in Crimea, and he has seized it.” Earlier this week, Gates told the Washington Post that the GOP lawmakers should “tone down” their criticism and “try to be supportive of the president rather than natter at the president.”

Though most Republicans agree with Obama’s policy for handling the Crimean crisis, some conservatives have argued that Obama’s perceived “weakness” on the global stage has given Putin the space to move Russian troops into Crimea. “We have a weak and indecisive president” and that “invites aggression,” Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) said last week. “Putin is playing chess and I think we’re playing marbles,” Rep. Mike Rogers (R-MI), the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee claimed, adding that Russia is “running circles around us.”

During his appearance, Gates also dismissed criticism of Obama’s weekend vacation. “I’ve seen this happen year after year, president after president. President takes a day or two off and plays golf. Doesn’t matter whether it’s President Obama or the first President Bush going fishing. I think you’ve got to give these guys a little time off, you know, mostly they are working 20 hours a day.”

Gates said he does not believe that “Crimea will slip out of Russia’s hand.” “I think it’s part of a long-term strategy on Putin’s part to create a Russian sphere of influence, a Russian bloc,” he explained. “I don’t think he will stop in Ukraine until there is essentially a pro-Russian government in Ukraine, in Kiev.”

Ukraine Starts Military Drills as Russia Warns on Eastern Unrest

Bloomberg By Kateryna Choursina and Volodymyr Verbyany

Ukraine began military drills as Russian forces tightened their hold on the Crimean peninsula and the Foreign Ministry in Moscow warned of "lawlessness" in the former Soviet republic's eastern provinces.

Ukraine's armed forces are testing the combat-readiness of troops, the Defense Ministry said today on its website, reiterating the government's desire for a peaceful end to the standoff in Crimea. Russia, which has vowed to defend the ethnic Russians that dominate Crimea after an uprising in Kiev, accused Ukraine of ignoring radicals in the nation's east.

Russia is wresting control of Crimea, home to its Black Sea Fleet, from Ukraine following last month's ouster of the former Soviet republic's Moscow-backed president, Viktor Yanukovych. Ukraine says its neighbor has almost 19,000 soldiers in the region, which will vote on joining Russia on March 16. The crisis is the worst between Russia and the West since the Cold War, with the European Union and the U.S. imposing sanctions.
