Trivial question ... dead facebook contact

I just found out today that one of my facebook friends passed away recently (about two weeks ago). My question is... would you eliminate them off your contact list? or keep them?

My instinct is to eliminate them, since their family will (maybe?) petition to have the page closed. Although some friends tell me that other deceased acquaintance pages are left active.

What would you do?

Sicario I say go with what ever option you are the most comfortable with :)

Absolutely keep them on your contact list. I'd love to get some updates from dead people.

I have a similar problem: A friend on FB died recently, but no one in his family took the page down so now, other friends post memories and tributes on his wall. I'm leaving it up for now, but eventually it'll get taken down.

I had a friend who committed suicide last summer and his FB page is still up. A lot of people use it to post memories and messages or tag old photos of him. I don't post anything on it myself, but I think for some people they appreciate it still being there.

As far as I know, it's possible that the profile be made into an "in memoriam" site. You just have to pertition for it with fb. A friend of mine (that I knew well personally, not just on fb) died suddenly about a year ago. I kept him in my friends list. Felt right.

Can we have a thread about facebook without someone reminding us that they don't use it? Good for you guys up there! ! You're so fucking cool because you avoid social networking sites! Wow!

Sicario, if you two were close than I'd leave it be just for reminiscence. Can't hurt.

A good friend of mine committed suicide almost 5 years ago so while I do not post on his FB, I've kept him on my friend's list ever since.

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to STDiva again...

What's the harm in keeping him on your contact list? Is this a mourning thing for you? Is it hard for you to let go while seeing updates about him from his family and friends? If that's the case, hide him from your timeline. I wouldn't unfriend him, though. You can't friend request him and have him accept ever again. Hide him, check up on the posts to his page when you want to.

And I'm sorry for your loss.

I wouldn't let decisions that involve facebook rule my life.

Nope, It definitely doesn't rule my life, but I just wanted to know the what if's... I never had to ponder about something like this.

True, although I don't think facebook has a Ouija version yet. :angels:

Yeah, I will definitely remove them out of respect for the family.

Keep em' It'll be sort of an archive for you. My dad passed away a couple of years ago and I still read his emails I saved to remind me of him and his whole outlook on things.
