The Grand Prix of Azerbaijan

A bit of history:

This inner-city course is a killer. There will be a number of safetycar stretches in the race!

Look at the walls around the track, in most aras there is zero tolerance room for making mistakes. You miss a corner slighly, ou slide over a curb, you hit the wall

:surprise:
Nice one from Valtteri - last to 2nd
Vettel should have been black flagged in my opinion. That retaliation was ridiculous!
Shame for Lewis.

After watching the race, I nce agaion think that inner-city courses are great for tripling the drama, but they just make no sense.

I find night races re a nice change, and there are racs that go more up-and-downhill, etc, but cities make for stupid races. Add the fact that there are no areas to go when things get to tight, it's just stop-and-go.

And Vettel really was a bitch today.

Vettel complaining that Hamilton "brake tested him" (as if that was an excuse for what followed).

The stewards examined data from his car and found that he had maintained a more or less constant speed, had not lifted off the throttle or braked, and had behaved no differently at that restart at that point on the track than at the other two restarts.

Vettel got a 10 second stop/go penalty (I think he should have been black flagged for what he did) and gets 3 points on his license taking him to 9. 2 points drop off by Silverstone. 12 points is a race ban.

Yeah I'm pretty sure Vettel knew full well that he'd gone too far but has too much pride (or arrogance) to see he'd acted childishly. It felt a bit odd that the stewards took as long as they did penalizing him, if he had served the penalty earlier he would've finished behind Lewis as he would've been slowed down trying to pass cars.

One thing I wanted to bring up was all the debris on the track, normally we just see discarded rubber off the racing line but on the British coverage of the race we kept seeing bits of wing or other bodywork on the track and it wasn't being cleared quickly (or not at all). Made me wonder if the communication to the marshals was pretty bad in this race.

Also I heard a Honda powered car finished the race! Also in the points!

No easy way for the marshalls to clear the track, hence the red flag on lap 22.

Alonso managed to nurse his McLaren home in 9th for 2 points - McLaren's first of the season. Issues with the battery caused a lack of power towards the end.

The real sensation was Alonso getting his car to the finish line, as sad as that is ^^

Well shit. That was an exciting race, I'll never call a race boring again before giving it more than one year :)

Next race will be a bit calmer, I guess, it's a "classic" Grand Prix, in Austrria, of course there is room for very exciting racing, too

Baku was a complete non-event last year. Absolutely nothing happened. This year, quite the opposite.

A standout race in what has already been a very good season up until now. And to think there were some very real concerns heading into the season about the potential inability to overtake with the new regulations etc. We have a two-way two-team fight for the title, and now add a bit of needle into the mix to put out what had been a friendly rivalry between Hamilton and Vettel up until now. It's going to be a good year. :)

Doesn't seem right somehow that Vettel finished ahead of Hamilton despite what went on. What happened to Hamilton's headrest was most unfortunate. The whole Vettel driving into Hamilton incident makes you wonder just what you have to do to get a black flag. Don't know the last time one was used but I would imagine it would have been for a lesser offence.

A missed opportunity of a win for Max Verstappen perhaps - Red Bull generally not up to speed with Mercedes and Ferrari but captilaised on circumstance. Ricciardo always seems to be there to pick up the race win when the usual suspects falter!

My guess is, Seb Vettel won't be getting much sleep this weekend. I'd say that he'll be having nightmares about an FIA executioner lopping off his head on Monday.

If the stewards had had some balls and just black flagged him, we wouldn't have to deal with all of this after-the-race side drama. Seb's periodic temper tantrums (especially the one where he cussed out Charlie Whiting) may play into their decision. We shall see.

Over the course of his career, he's been allowed to get away with acting like a mad baby when his temper gets the better of him. And even worse, he will put the blame on the injured party... until his balls are in a vise. Only then will he feign an apology. Don't get me wrong though... he's a great and talented racer. But the FIA needs to put him in check before this gets any further out of hand.

My thoughts xactly. He took more than one lesson from the early Michael Schumacher.

Yep, that's what should have happened.

It was interesting to hear from Palmer in that clip how Johnny Cecotto had driven into someone on purpose during a GP2 race and got banned for the ENTIRE weekend.

I was at a cookout yesterday and my girlfriend's demon of a 5 year old grandson hit someone in the face with a dart. And he, like Vettel, refused to accept responsibility until they threatened to take his toys away from him and not let him get in the pool. Then, THEN he half-heartedly said that he was sorry. He didn't mean that apology any more than Vettel did. I would have disqualified Vettel... and I would have done what my dad would have done back in the day to that little boy: light his ass on fire with a belt.

IMO, it's inevitable that young Verstappen's temper is going to get the better of him at some point. Not only is he one of the best racers that I've seen, he's also one of the most volatile. And with the precedents set by the FIA recently, lightly tapping Vettel on the wrist time after time, how will they ever justify punishing Verstappen when he does something like this? The FIA is a chicken without feathers.

Rumor is, Seb Vettel was a big Pee Wee Herman fan as a child.

About that stupid moment in Baku

Let's move on. I am always happy when we are on the european leg of the season, because races are on TV around 2 in the afternoon, perfect timing

Some track insight, good to know where the hottest action will go down

That was another fascinating race, again with Sebastian Vettel bitching about something - and still kept on after the situation was 100% sorted out - after the race. The issue was Bottas getting the start ideal, taking the lead from the gitgo. Vettel instantly reported him, saying Bottas "jumped the gun". Well, pictures showed that Bottas just started perfectly. And there was a starting mix-up with a three-car collision in corner one, Verstappen being taken out of the race short after.
