Humanitarian Bowl: Maryland vs Nevada--The Terps have made it a career this season of beating good teams. Despite their record, they played five ranked teams and beat four of them, losing only by seven to BC. Of course, they lost to MidTenn and were ****** by the Cavaliers. Still, Friedgen fielded a pretty decent team this year, with QB Chris Turner leading the way. And it's a good thing. UofM doesn't rush well and they're facing the country's third best rushing defense in the Pack. The Wolfers have a DL named Kevin Basped who could give Turner fits--Turner was sacked 11 times in the Terps final two games. Ault will fire up his team off of their season-ending win against LaTech. He may need to jolt them--this is a young team.
Texas Bowl: Western Michigan vs Rice--Bailiff and the Owls are a good combination. On paper these two teams match up pretty well. But Rice plays in Conference USA--not quite the challenge of the MAC. Plus Rice will have to stop RB Brandon West--that will be a lot to ask from a team that finished 10th in defense in their conference. Rice QB Chase Clement however is a real talent, holding more than a 66% completion percentage. Broncs CB Londen Fryer is an All-MAC DB who could hold back some of that Clement talent.
Holiday Bowl: Oklahoma State vs Oregon--Gundy's Cowboys are a quick-strike finesse team who gave the Sooners all they could handle. Their only three losses were against Top 5 teams. They roll up the score on their opponents like a pinball machine, averaging more than 42 points per game. Oregon coach Mike Bellotti will have to find a way to corral the Cowboy scoring machine if he wants to stay in this one. The Ducks are capable of a little scoring themselves, with QB Masoli one of the Pac10's most efficient passers since taking over at the position. But UofO relies heavily on the run, and with the Cowboys' shaky D this could prove helpful in keeping the ball away from the high-scoring Okies. Poor defenses and high scoring offenses should make this one a thrill to watch.
