Re: The Official NCAA College Football Thread!

tv has nothing to do with it. its the schools. the bowl games bring in a lot of money. they wont turn it down. the reason that division 1-AA and 2A and 3A have tourneys, is that there is no money to be made. it is all the schools and their greedy alumni. this i am 100% sure of. but after this bowl season with bsu the only unbeaten, that has to be the final nail, so to speak, in the bcs. :2 cents:

:wtf: happened??? Ugh! As a bonafide "Gator-hater" this is really gonna suck for a while.

Did Tressel get paid to throw this game or what??? What a pathetic performance! Glad I'm not a gung-ho Buckeye....I'd be really fucking bummed today. As it is, the Gators covered and we blew past the O/U so I won a few bucks so it ain't all bad....

Next year....'horns return to the top so better look out!!!

Hook 'em.......

I think it will be another decade before they even remotely think about even hearing arguments about a playoff. There seems to be no end to the madness. And once there is a playoff in 50 years, it'll be something lame, like the top 8 teams going at it.

Re: The Official NCAA College Football Thread!

All the previous chatter about a playoff system got me to digging on the web for some other info. Interestingly, I came across this heretofore unreported exchange between Tressel and the press after the game. Note the comment about what a I assume is a reporter allegedly asking him about a possible playoff system:

"Let me start out saying this: Do NOT blame that game on the defense, OK? I don't care who you play, whether it's a high school team, a junior college team, a college team, much less an NFL team, when you turn the ball over five times . . . you ain't gonna beat anybody. That was a disgraceful performance. ... We gave it away. We gave them the frigging game. In my opinion, that sucked.

You can't turn it over five times. Holy crap. I don't know who the hell we think we are when we do something like that ... We've thrown [five] interceptions returned for touchdowns. That might be a league record. And we've still got six games left, so there's no telling how many we'll have. I mean, it's absolutely pitiful to play like that . . . Horrible. Just horrible. Horrible.

Playoffs? Don't talk about playoffs. Are you kidding me? Playoffs? I'm just hoping we can win a game, another game."

Sound familiar???

Ahh, I don't think there is a football fan out there that doesn't love that press conference. Until the Denis Green "They are who we thought they were" speech that may have been the greatest football rant ever. :rofl2:

thats the way it has to be. this isnt basketball where they can play three times a week. more than eight teams in the football tourney will take way too long.

They have plenty of time to play at least a 16 team playoff. Ohio State had 50 days off between its last game and the BCS title game. They might even have enough time to play a 32 team field. Hey, if high school, and all the other college divisions can pull it off, why not div I?

Besides, if it is just the top 8, its gonna be the same boring teams that always get all the votes. Still a paper championship in the end - imo.

no it wont. the six big conference winners and two winners from the other conferences. after all, i think if you dont win your conference, then you have no right to be in the title hunt. ie nebraska in 2001.

this year it would have been oklahoma, usc, ohio state, wake forest, florida, louisville, boise state, and byu. not exactly the "year in, year out" picks.

If there is a play in way to it, I can live with that, but not all conferences decide their winner the same way. Some decide it with a title game - some do not. And those aren't exactly the top 8 by the voters - LSU, Michigan, etc? You know that'll be a factor to an 8 team playoff.

Plus, if winning your conference is the only way to get you into the tournament, it'll really penalize the deeper conferences and better teams within. You have to have some sort of wild card entry system.

fine. make it a 14 team tourney. with the top 2 ranked getting a bye in the first round. that will only be one week longer than an eight team tourney. i had to go up to 14 so the tournament would be balanced. this way there are six at large bids. this is the best compromise i could agree with.

Not a bad plan. I'd need more details though, but that could work. I still say a 32 team field is what they should shoot for and a minimum of 16 teams is needed - imo. Besides, the teams that advance don't really need Christmas break anyway!

32 is way too much. 16 could work if there are no byes. :)

Sold!

But how we gonna figure out who gets in? I say conference championships will have to be universal across the board, then they should use a committee to determine the wildcards. Sound fair? Actually, that might work. Too bad it'll never happen.

yes to the first part. no to committees. conference championships acroos the board, oh hell yeah. but no voting on the at larges. i say the six second places get the at large bids, unless notre dame goes undefeated. they are independent. they only get to go to the tourney if they go undefeated. now this is final. i think we have come up with a bullet proof tourney kungfudude. :glugglug:

If your just going to go by the record of independent schools or any other school for that matter how would you control the fact some of them will want to schedule cupcake teams to improve their record. It's bad enough as it is with some schools playing no more than one or two quality opponents a year.

good question. nebraska had this problem. they dont anymore. if the sec or the big 12 wants to schedule gimmes, thats fine. their conferences are good enough to do that. but the pac-10 and the big-10 cannot do this. the acc can. big east cant. and i guarantee that the boise states and the byus ant the tcus will gladly schedule a texas, or a miami. they wont be opposed to the good opposition. and neither am i. but the big 12, acc, and the sec doesnt have to schedule great teams in the non- conerence schedule.:2 cents:
