I think that any locals in Africa being able to eat provides a certain justification. Again, please read my comment above regarding giraffe hunting. But, people there are hungry and "sport hunting" provides real relief for very real people.

Thanx for the compliment. I am a smart guy, and I have Google at my fingertips. Average weight of a male giraffe - 2600 lbs or 1190 kg. That's a lot of meat.

Re: The giraffe hunters who pay 10k to shoot the gentle giants with guns & bows for s

I say

SHOOT THEM ALL!!! those hunters.
That's what happens when the wrong people gain too much money and power.
This is just sick. The elephants are nearly all gone, so now we're going to start with the giraffes?
This makes me so angry. Actually, some decent people should stand up and go to Africa as well to start hunting the hunters.

Re: The giraffe hunters who pay 10k to shoot the gentle giants with guns & bows for s

So sad. Why? I just don't get this kind of mentality. :(

Re: The giraffe hunters who pay 10k to shoot the gentle giants with guns & bows for s

We should track all these people down and start hunting them.

There you go. Other than whimsy being his usual douche-bag self, I don't see a whole lot of condemnation coming down. I'm not saying that there had to be, I'm just reading the replies on this thread with my usual degree of bemused bemusement. "Those poor giraffes! What a bunch of unkempt savages people are!" Everything that has been posted here can be used interchangeably with whales, but........silence.

Editors Note: I give as much of a fuck about this as I do about anything else around here. I just enjoy bullshit double standards. It's like a hobby.

So, you anticipated a response particular to whaling, didn't get it and automatically assumed to be more highly evolved on the concept? Ok. :dunno:

I'm opposed to the slaughter of whales as well - to any animal, equally. How's that? I hadn't come across the whaling thread until now.

Funny thing - when I noticed that you were the OP in the thread you linked, I immediately understood your motivation: you're upset that Ulysses' posting got more attention than yours. And now you're apparently distancing yourself from the entire conversation ... i.e. "you don't give a fuck".

In a nutshell, your message is clear. Everyone must pay 100% attention to you, because you're the most knowledgeable and your opinion holds the most weight. If people get upset about the giraffe story Ulysses posted, then they absolutely must respond in exactly the same way about the creatures that you referenced as well.

Oh, but now you don't care. You don't have the inclination to allow people to respond to you ... you've already moved on to bigger and better things, right?

Stop looking down mayhem. There's no one there.

Look up.

When I saw this thread, I was reminded of this. It may not be giraffes, but the same sentiment applies, and the Rhino IS on the endangered list.

I'm guessing you're responding to my post, although you didn't quote it. Fair enough, hunger is a very real problem in Africa, and as long as it is getting eaten, it isn't a waste, but the HUNTER is still looking for a trophy. Perhaps it's a little less despicable then people that shoot deer, saw off the antlers, then leave the body for the coyotes. In my area the deer population in certain areas was getting a little out of hand, so they wanted to thin the heards with sharp shooters, and donate the meat to the homeless shelters....people freaked out about killing the deer. They didn't seem so worried about the hungry people though. I would like your definition of trophy hunting if you wouldn't mind.

Re: The giraffe hunters who pay 10k to shoot the gentle giants with guns & bows for s

Looking at the dead animal just angered and saddened me.

So, I blocked out that image and focused on the blonde milf.

Re: The giraffe hunters who pay 10k to shoot the gentle giants with guns & bows for s

Is it any wonder why they offer these "hunts"? Years ago they sold their own people to slave owners fer krise sake! Why would they NOT sell hunting safaris?

BTW... I think it sucks. That isn't hunting. "Hunting" is NOT being driven out by a guide in a Land Rover, setting up a high powered rifle with a scope, and shooting an animal.

It's despicable!

I'm as disgusted by this as anyone, but I recall a thread I started about whale hunting a couple years ago. No one really got offended over those gentle giants being murdered.

It's not a zero-sum game. You can be disgusted at everything that's disgusting. I wasn't aware of your Sea Shepherd thread, but, if it makes you feel any better around the same time you posted that thread (2009-12-11) I was getting my account suspended on facebook for racism against Japan on the Whale Wars discussion page.

Since it keeps getting mentioned, I would like to hear what the collective definition of "sport hunter" is. I ask because, after 25+ years of being a hunter, I have no clue what you guys are talking about.

I hunt. But not like most of the armchair cowboys that live in my neck of the woods. I don't consider using corn feeders and tree stands hunting. However, that's still not "sport hunting". Even the rednecks here usually eat what they shoot. To me, sport hunting is killing for fun and not eating what you shoot. Though I don't like Ted Nugent's politics, the guy gets what it means to be an outdoorsman.

Jeezus, who stomped on your wee-wee this week? I was pointing out the Oprah show quality to this thread. "Let's find something to be offended about." One day ago, none of you gave two shits about giraffes, now you're drawing swords. Meanwhile the whaling issue has been right out there for anyone who wants it. This isn't about my thread. And if you took the time to know what the fuck you're going on about, you'd know that I'm not that guy.

My definition of trophy hunting is passing up a full grown deer, with a below average rack and continueing on hoping for a deer with a better set of antlers. I have never seen or heard of any hunter, anywhere that has ever sawed off the antlers and left the rest of the deer. If it has ever happened, it was a one in a million doofus and nothing more. The vast majority of hunters use the meat for themselves. The rest of the 99.99999% of all hunters donate the meat taken to the various "Hunters Against Hunger" programs that exist (which you mention yourself).

Covered in my comment above. Find me a hunter that's not utilizing the meat, and I will join you in asking him what his fucking problem is. Trust me though, it's not going to be a full time job.

I've seen the carcass...I called 1-800-poacher. I really don't even have a problem with a little of that (poaching), in the case of putting food on a table. Like, if your limit on deer is 2 a season, but you have a wife and 6 kids, and a third comes through your property, and you need it to feed your family, I can live with that. I can live with killing out of season for the same reason, but when I saw that deer, and it was huge, just rotting in the field behind the stop I was at (in a pretty urban area) with sawed off antlers, it really pissed me off. To me, it's ok to pass up a smaller rack, for a larger one, as long as the rest is going to go to good use.

Again, what you saw was as isolated an incident as I've ever heard of. And you saying that it was in an urban area makes me wonder if this was a hunter as opposed to a moron with a gun. I still don't know of anyone who buys a hunting license, suits up and takes to the field with the sole intent of sawing off antlers. It simply isn't done.

Most of the safaris are run by Afrikaners. The were a couple of shows on the channel Versus (now NBC Sports) that showed big game hunts. Never hunted giraffes on the show. It caught my attention when they were hunting hippos & crocs as far as where do you shoot it and with the hippo how to retrieve it.

I saw this thread was still going on, so in an attempt to be unbiased, I looked up a first hand account of a "heroic" Giraffe hunt so I could understand the experience better.

Here's the link:

http://www.kalahari-trophy-hunting.com/my-smoky-giraffe.html

Here are my favorite quotes from the moron who actually did this (I realize this is only one story, but it is still a story):

Fat Fuck Gets Warmed Up:

"I had used my .300 Win Mag with 180 gr Cor Lokt bullets to put eleven animals 'into the salt'."

Spoiler! He Actually Ends Up Shooting The Giraffe 4 Times:

"Barry was satisfied with my marksmanship. . ."

The Adventure Begins!:

"In my excitement I got stuck on a Black Hook Thorn bush. The thorn entrapped my ear. I was paralyzed. Yassir, the tracker, carefully worked my ear loose from the vicious thorn. Only a little blood was lost."

And Just To Prove How Bad Ass He Is:

"I drank Grape Fanta to quench my thirst."

He also explains how he plans to use the shin bones as towel racks. . .

Great read.

Well I'm not disagreeing with you....I'm just saying I've seen it...and it was most likely a bow, or crossbow. The city it was in, gun fire would be noticed and investigated. I know guys that will mount just the antlers, but they do stock their freezers with the animal.

LOL
There is a problem with not being Vegan and finding problems with animals being killed. . . .

The disgust that many here feel when they see this is what us Vegans feel daily as we are bombarded at grocery stores, on TV and out with friends at restaurants. Seeing dead animals from factory farms that were tormented in ways to make the toughest guy cringe makes this giraffe death look merciful. As the very least it had a normal life until it was killed. It all breaks my heart.
