Summer Olympics 2008

There was a sad little article in the Wall Street Journal Friday about an organization that hands out awards to Olympians who display "true sportsmanship"...they gave the example of a Chinese Fencer who acknowledged fencing "hits" by her opponent for the proper scoring of the match. The article interviewed the president of this organization (they get $80,000 from the IOC to attend Olympic events and for award presentations) and he was complaining that he was having trouble finding any athletes to even qualify for the awards this year. Let's review what examples of sportsmanship we've seen so far this Olympics

1. The Chinese Gymnastics Team fielding toddlers.
2. The "Swedish" weightlifter who threw a tantrum and tossed his medal
3. American James Blake calling his Tennis opponent "ungentlemanly" for not acknowleding an obvious bad call by the referee 2 points from match point
4. This Jamaican sprinter who apparently showboated and did some shameless self-congratulations BEFORE his 100M race was finished!
5. The Spanish Men's Basketball team taking a pre-Olympics "racist" photograph mocking Asian people.

Hmmm. Has sportsmanship gone out the window this Olympics? Michael Phelps should offer to rerace the silver medalist because who can be sure that he touched first? The article offered examples of Olympic athletes offering to postpone matches and rematch opponents if they missed their scheduled match or if they were to sick to compete, etc...it wouldn't be unheard of for Phelps to do so!

They shouldn't call it gymnastics anymore, they should call it "hugging-nastics". Seems like thats all they do: get on stage, do your performance, walk off stage, and hug 30 people around you.

Hey have I missed the gymnastics yet??

I sure as hell hope not, because that would mean that I missed it too. But, then again, I am on the West Coast. I don't know. Ask Violator.

No, it's tonight. The date they have is for Beijing, not for the US. When it's 8 pm on Saturday here, it's something like 10 am on Sunday there.

Actually it's tomorrow, being Sunday night. The gymnastics events finals are Monday morning, Sunday night on tv.

Thanks! I really did want to know that Bruce Willis' character was dead all along, and that the little boy was the only one who could see him. :crash:

what the fuck you lookin at?
GSB I wasn't gonna tell you. As for this shit about the best olympian ever. Well there was the argument about new suits and technology, yada, yada, yada. Has anyone stopped to realize that whatever help he has from his suit or whatever is the exact same advantages that his competition has. So regardless it all comes down to his physical abilities! The man is a swimming machine, pure and simple!

America is the best, fuck the rest!

so does anybody know the right time? for the gymnastics 2morrow?

the olympics sucks. I used to find it interesting.I must not have been paying very much attention.

they had the marathon on today...that is the most boring thing I've ever seen on television. like six hours of people jogging down a street. they need to find the fast forward button on that shit.

I just had a brain storm: I mean no disrespect to all the British members here on the board, just to get that in the open, but when the Olympics are over in London in 2012, I wonder how hard it will be for you to hand over the torch to the next country, seeing as how Britian has a history for not letting things go without a fight!

I'm sorry, I'm sorry, it's a joke, please don't get offended!!!! :D

Since you're so keen to give away the results of the games before I even get to watch them, how did Dara Torres do?

Silver in both events. She lost the Gold in the 50m Freestyle by 1/100th of a sec, same time as Phelps won one of his Golds. I was hoping she would win the Gold.
