Soooo... I signed the papers today

You Sir are without a doubt a great man!
Best of luck and come back soon as happy and healthy as you are now.....you are healthy right?
Just kidding.
My respect for you is boundless.

Wow!

I truly feel humbled.

I did not expect so many positive reponses! :)

Ladies and gentlemen,

I must confess.

This is not the first time I have volunteered my medical services....

About once every 2-3 years (I've been doing this for over 3 decades), I volunteer to spend time at a clinic in the Appalachian mountains and then following my Appalachian experience, I would end up being sent to a remote location elsewhere in the United States (in the 'Black Hills' of Dakota (Mostly South, but sometimes North)).

I am not a stranger to volunteering my "medical/nursing expertise".

However:

I am touched and humbled by your individual messages of support and comfort.

I promise to keep y'all updated the best I can! :)

Thank you,
Roy

as i've just belatedly open this thread i'll join the rest with my best wishes for you in this roughneck - a very positive and kind thing to do :hatsoff:

Update:

Found another group that's going a little ahead of time.

Good Samaritans Medical Mission - 2007 missions

Unlike our group, they accept volunteers from any profession. If anyone is interested, drop them a line. I know a nurse in California who volunteers with them on a regular basis and recommends the group.

Oh and yes, my daughter's issues have been ironed out. :) Apparently my State doesn't "automatically" honor common law marriages, so I had to do the bureaucratic run around to get our "relationship" straightened out for her passport. :fight:

cheers,

Any profession?

Well, I am an investor and a stock broker (of sorts). Somehow I doubt my services will be needed over there.
Just kidding.

I hope they get lots of volunteers.

:)

That's fantastic, Roughneck

A tremendously noble and inspiring mission

I can only imagine the range of emotions You Might experience going back.

Much respect and all good wishes to you and yours.

Quick update - tickets booked and confirmed!

My dear daughter comes home coming Sunday and she'll spend a couple days with her mother (and me! :D) before we depart on the coming Wednesday! :)

McRocket (and this goes for the rest of y'all) - if you are a human being who desires to help others, guess what? You qualify! :)

You don't have to be a "medical expert" - just someone willing to help. Even on our "medical missions" here in the States (and sometimes abroad) - there are dozens of "non-medical volunteers" - clerks, housewives, janitors, the manager of a local bank, truck drivers, executives of shipping corporations... you name it!

Every little bit helps. All contributions are welcome!

To borrow a line from a movie: "It's not who you are but what you do that defines you..."

cheers,

Wow, what you are doing looks really interesting. It looks like the kind of time which will be hard work, helping others and learning a lot of interesting stuff yourself.

Good on you.

Mel

This is the type of care that I envy. There are so few people today who are willing to do what you're doing, and I have to say this is really awesome. Good luck to you and your team, I hope you all get there and back safe and sound.

You will be well received

Very much an inspiring initiative

- Looking forward to you sharing some
pages out of your journal with us, upon return.

Be well ~

I had not read this, thanks for the update "bump" Roughneck. I admire your humanitarian efforts, my friend. This is something I might really like to do someday (when I get a job that has vacation time). Helping others gives such a heartwarming feeling, especially when you're helping those who are in much need.

Well.

That was one long trip. Had to cut it short - my father passed away on Monday, and since I was the oldest child, I had to rush home for the funeral. My daughter is still in Vietnam, recovering from a very bad case of Gastroenteritis. The plan is to have her return with the rest of the group when they return end of this week.

I'm exhausted. Need sleep.

cheers,
