So final fantasy 7 remake is gonna be an action rpg. *sigh*

And episodic...

Episodic is good. I mean, in theory.
Like Peter Jackson's hobbit, they're pulling more story out of all the parts. In theory.

If I had to guess, it'll be a '1st year season pass' 2nd year, 3rd, etc.

I don't know how I feel about it being more of an action RPG yet. I guess it depends on how it plays out once I see it. While I don't like how turned based RPGs are disappearing it might still be good enough for me to play it. It's not something new though as I'm pretty sure they came out with how the basic fighting gameplay was going to be for the remake be a while ago.

The part I worry about it being episodic is at the rate they are moving with this project the whole game might get remade 15 years from now. I don't think people's attention for that would hold out nearly that long. I doubt mine would, and that's just if they don't decide to cancel the entire thing sometime midway through it. It's either that or they rush it at about the halfway point and it ends up being crap after that.

The only way I see this going at any good pace is if they have secretly been working on the next episodes in tandem while they are working on the first one and the rest come out at a relatively good pace.

Yeah, it seems that vocal internet nerds cry about turn based shit, so they are doing a semi hybrid. It's not fully action, there are some of the old style mixed in which saves it for me.. but barely. FF7 is just THAT important to me, I'm going to pick it up. I would much much much rather it be turn based, or at least have the option for that, but the option obviously would require a completely different build. Not gonna happen.

I'm not thrilled, but we'll see how it goes. I've burned out on the whole anime looking characters of FF a long time ago too. But nothing is stopping me from playing the original release again either.

Speaking as someone who .. sadly.. has FF13 on my steam games list, I just cant understand the appeal of modern day high-action/a cutscene at the beginning, middle and end of every corridor, AND OMFG are there a lotta corridors kinda games.

I gotta say, ff7 original had a lotta corridors, but they were more unique. Atmospheric. Zoomed-out as if you were watching someone else live their lives and you just so happened to have the control of it, but it wasnt a chooose-your-own adventure. 13 was endless running, button mashing and too many cutscenes with characters who dont redeem themselves.

So at least ff7 has likeable characters going for them. The setting works really well. If it had an automated playthrough option, I'd watch it. And kind of a reverse nostalgia, like if you watched back to the future 2 before 1.

I mean shit, I've watched worse things in my life. (Writers strike era)

I find this to be a little too late to the party game honestly. I know it will make a lot of money new and old alike. However this is not feeling like the FF7 I know and love. A trick of the memory.

Well,...if nothing else I guess a much more lifelike higher resolution version of Tifa can't be a totally bad thing.

Ha, yeah. Her titties have been toned down, but I like em small anyway.

/about to make a Yuffie statement, but then remembered her age.
/then also remembered she wasnt aerith-flat, anywho?
/so theres that.
/tries to think of any, ANY other female in ff7
/drawing a blank besides maybe 3 others? (blonde turks girl, barrets daughter, aeriths mom?)
FF7 was kind of a sausagefest, hm.

I think they had to do that anyway as the old cartoon image of her just won't work translated that true to scale, plus it's only in a relative sense. I would still say she has very large breast still, it's just instead of the gigantic ones of her classic image.

I even like how they keep her old school eye color from the original FF7 artwork even if it looks a little off on a normal person.

Off the top of my head the only other female character I can think of is Lucrecia. There really weren't that many named characters in the game in general for how big it was and it's scope when it came out.

https://www.tweaktown.com/news/6758...lassic-mode-turn-based-auto-battle/index.html

Classic Mode basically switches controlled characters over to AI autopilot. It's only half like 1997's Final Fantasy 7 and only lets gamers use commands when the ATB gauge is full. But combat is still in real-time and the AI-controlled party leader will block, dodge, and slash with combo attacks to fill up the ATB gauge. Players can jump in at any time to do special moves, use items, or summon monsters once the ATB gauge is full, but the automatic control won't be interrupted until it's turned off.

Ergo my concern.

Previously reported issues, also:
FF7 will be episodic, and next-gen. Keeping your save between ps4/xb1 and the ps5/xb1sxUltraCapcomMegaman will require a season pass. (And between episodes ~ I guess a squaresoft acct wont be free?)
Also, that 'season' pass will truly be just a season, the same way the original came on multiple discs.
So 60$, whatever the pass is for 2020, 20201, etc.
Read a whie back that they're aiming for 36 different episodes. Considering the game is 100+ gigs, 2 BluRays, and it only encompassed midgar ~ which was the first 3 hours of the 1997 game.. I think a multi-year game seems inevitable. barring creative burnout on their part.

But optimistically, I very much want classic mode to be a real thing, and not just autopilot. :)

It doesn't help that AI controlled characters in video games tend to do stupid things you don't want them to do. They would have to buff the people you aren't in control of or make some other balance changes to account for it. Otherwise as much of a pain in the ass as it might be micromanaging them will probably be tactically superior.

They would be wise to listen to all thee peoples. I, for one.. would like Ft Condor to not just be a minigame but a fully fledged sidegame that I could spend dozens of hours in.
Or chocobo farm/breeding!
Not to mention all the things they could add to gold saucer, geez.. sidegames all by themselves, if one were so inclined.
Here is a super, SUPER easy one, and its almost canon to have it in every game, now:
The job board.
FF 11 up to 15 has side missions to go hunt down someone, something, etc.
I know it'd be just a diversion with some decent loot, but anything that lessens the dullness of 'the grind' is welcome, to me.
"Kill the snake in the swamp, but with only ice spells, as per a researcher at Shinra wants to test snakehide durability!"
"Reward: 1x Snake Skin, 10,000 Gil, 12 BP"

At the very least, they could give A REAL STORY to cait sith. Everybody else is pretty fleshed out.
Cait Sith reminds me of Quina from FF9 ~ forgettable but stll one of the main characters. Not quite explained or enjoyable to do their side stuff.

But thats just /my2cents. :)

Interesting. I'm wondering if that when you're running around dodging attacks (if you actually do dodge or is it nonsense like Dragon Warrior 11 where you can move around and it doesn't matter) and you choose classic mode, you take more hits or if there's any downside to it. Definitely curious as to how this will work but I am very happy they realized this would be an issue. I think its fair to assume a huge part of the player base who want this game, played the original and want to replicate that experience with new shiny things added.

Very very pleased.
