http://www.nydailynews.com/news/pol...demeanor-cocaine-possession-article-1.1523275Florida Rep. Henry "Trey" Radel pleaded guilty on Wednesday morning to misdemeanor cocaine possession and was sentenced to one year of probation.
The first-term Republican entered the plea in court, acknowledging that he purchased 3.5 grams of cocaine for $250 from an undercover federal agent.
“I’ve hit a bottom where I realize I need help,” Radel told District of Columbia Superior Court Judge Robert Tigno during his court appearance.
“I want to come out of this stronger,” Radel said, adding that he wants to “continue serving this country.”
The 37-year-old freshman lawmaker was arrested and charged Tuesday following a federal “buy and bust” operation on Oct. 29.
Radel admitted he bought cocaine from an undercover Drug Enforcement Agent in Dupont Circle in Washington, D.C. in October. After the transaction, federal officers visited the politician at his apartment later that day and informed him that he would be charged for the drug purchase. In court Wednesday he said when officers approached him, he handed over the small amount of cocaine that remained.
In a statement Tuesday, Radel apologized for making an “extremely irresponsible choice.” He said he intends to seek treatment and counseling, but did not discuss his political future.
His lawyer said Radel has already been in outpatient treatment in Washington but says the politician plans to seek full treatment in Naples, Florida.
Radel, who is married and has one son, was elected in 2012 to represent the 19th District of Florida.
I don't care about him being a Republican, what irritates me is the hypocrisy. This is a man who voted for drug testing for food stamp recipients. Un fucking believable
Just saw there's a thread about this already. My apologies
