Opinion polls: Obama's health care reform law not a winner so far

Congress has spoken, and now the people have spoken: In polls released this week, Americans say they are not pleased with the healthcare reforms enacted by President Obama and congressional lawmakers.

Voters worry the new law will erode the quality of care and jack up costs, even while it helps reduce the number of people unable to get health insurance.
The new polls suggest that Democrats still have a big sales job ahead of them as November House and Senate elections draw closer, and as Americans try to learn more about what the law means for them (see "Healthcare Reform 101").

On Tuesday, Mr. Obama signed the second portion of the healthcare reform package, the so-called "reconciliation" that contains elements not in the original Senate legislation. As the president continues a public-relations campaign for the reforms, the polls taken since the House voted on March 21 don't all line up against him. But skepticism about the new law is sizable on several fronts:

Costs. Some 55 percent of Americans expect their own costs for healthcare to be higher because of the reforms, and 60 percent say the nation's overall health tab will rise, according to a Washington Post poll. Only 16 percent predict that medical spending in the US will be lower because of the law. Separately, a USA Today/Gallup poll found 64 percent saying the law "will cost the government too much."

Everyone wants a perfect solution in a world where none are available. IMHO opinion polls on issues like this are meaningless. It will all come down to whether it works or not. And for that, we will all have to wait and see.

They knew this before they signed the bill. Public opinion polls have been unfavorable towards the President's plan for awhile now. This is a big moment for him though. Health care is going to going to make or break this administration.

I'm anxious to see how this affects the mid-term elections. If they can't sell this reform to the American people, they're going to lose some seats in Congress. This is all going to get very interesting by November...

The genie is out of the bottle.

Not a whole lot those of us that disagree with it can do but vote in November.

How many of these pissed off nonsupporters have gotten their information solely from Conservative talk show hosts?

I disagree. Obama's presidency hinges on what all presidencies hinge on...the economy. Consider this...as ENORMOUS a blunder as Iraq was for GWB, it still took for the economy to tank before his support among regular people nose-dived.

When the economy turns around and if their are major successes in Afghanistan...he will be untouchable.

His first year predictably was all bad news as the economic carryover hadn't yet bottomed.

The only danger Obama faces is in seeming to alienate some of his core support trying to placate those who will never agree with him.

As opposed to the liberal leanings of CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN et al. :dunno:

And just what are you implying? That if I get my information from the "no spin zone" it's somehow tainted or biased? It sounds to me like you're pointing a finger at FOX News...

Well said.

I watch both Fox News and CNN, and I disagree with this health care. So less than you think I am sure.

Anyway the big question is where is this money coming from to pay for this? You can't just print more money. Anyone who has taken a high school economics class knows that.

Uh, I would say so.

I love The O'Reilly Factor. You can't take everything he says to heart, but for the most part, he hits the nail on the head...

If you're a Conservative.

Liberals make me chuckle with their assumptions. " How can you not see it our way?"

" You are being told what to think!"

Meanwhile Robert Gibbs, Bill Burton, Richard Goodstein et al are pushing their propaganda on a daily basis.

See, that's what mystifies me. How does either side claim that it's the other that's being fed propaganda? We're all eating from our own side of the same shit sandwich. Can't we all just agree on that?

I wish there was one news source that puts no spin on any subject whatsoever. Both sides, all sides, no sides, completely objective reporting of the days events. Is that too much to ask for?

He has basically 24 months to turn this ship around.

He better get busy.

The only thing you get from the O'Reilly is spin. He is just another political entertainer who sells the same product as the rest of them...GOPer inyourfacism.

Most of his points can be turn upside down by his guests if they simply did a modicum of background preparedness and used his same types of arguments and analogies against him.

That is their job to push an agenda..that's why they work for a party (Gibbs and Burton directly for the administration)...not a show on a "news" channel. Duh...

Did you think Dana Perino was actually telling you news as the Bush press secy.???

Goodstein and Burton both push their agenda on news shows.

Not sure if Goodstein even works for the Obama administration. He may be employed by the DNC though,

But they can only do so at the behest of the news shows who invite them to talk about issues.

They don't get to sit in front of a camera reporting their political opinions as news.

A nonsense analogy B/C...cut bait now.

I am sure you have voiced displeasure with Karl Rove pushing his agenda on the sheeple when GWB was in office.

I did? The only thought I ever had on Rove was everywhere I thought he engaged in illegality.

He has a right to tell his political side when requested to be interviewed. That's his job.:dunno:
