Obama

Three lullabies in an ancient tongue
People should do some historical research before they make any judgements about Obama visiting Cuba this week. The Reagan trip to the Soviet Union was preceded by Nixon's visit there way back in 1972 the when Leonid Brezhnev was the general secretary. At that time in history, we had a very tenuous relationship with the CCCP....tensions were high and it was still part of an era that was fondly remembered as the "Cold War". Neither side conceded anything nor gave quarter for any perceived sins during that visit. Still, the action was beneficial in establishing a dialogue, no matter how minor. It never hurts to communicate regardless of the differences.

We do a shitload of commerce with a number of nations whose human rights and political histories are certainly as bad or worse than Cuba's. The only way that we could absolutely make a difference in Cuba's willingness to consider a more humanitarian approach to their society and economy is to make it in their best economic interest to do so. Why else would they accept our current olive branch? Normalization of diplomatic relations with Cuba is the right thing to do. Sorry, but anyone who thinks otherwise is just plain wrong. If that was Trump or Cruz standing up there with Fidel's brother, y'all would be applauding his ability to accomplish what Obama couldn't so, in my opinion, this unconditional partisanship crap should be given a rest as it applies to this subject.

Jesus H. Christ!

Nixon only negotiated the Salt I treaty. Detente was a term heard throughout America during that era. Completely apples and oranges compared to Reagan's efforts.

There is no such efforts made by Obama. In any respect. I have a good recollection of history. You seemed to have forgotten it, or willful ignorance is in play.

What's wrong with Obama making the first step ?

God damn! Preach Jagger. Fucking American Treasure!

Because it's not going to work. All the money that will come in is going to go straight to the government, the Cuban people will not see a dime. We're rewarding a murderous regime. Furthermore, what the do we get out this deal? Nothing. Typical Obama. We give and give and give and we get nothing in return. Obama is the worst deal maker in history. The Castros are laughing at us. The same with the Iranians

Then you are an idiot. He said there were no concessions, both Reagan and Nixon got concessions ABM treaty eventually, and Reagan walked from Reykjavik. That's how you negotiate, and the Soviets came back to the table.

Obama has made no human rights demands, nothing. Trump is right, worst negotiator as president we have ever had.

why would Obama make demands or ask for concessions? I thought he was just on a vacation/pilgrimage of sorts. Just payin his respects to the OGs.

Cuba is a mecca of sorts to some people.

I think he should stay there.

Amen. The Left has always romanticized Cuba.

Cuba needs us a hell of a lot more than we need them.

Raul is demanding Gitmo back. I think Obama asked for a box of cigars.

The 99 year lease is over, the Landlords want their real estate back. The tenants say we have big guns and don't care about International Law.

Can't even watch ESPN. What a bunch of tools.

(soon to be former) ESPN's Dan Le Batard sums it up:

Another loss. That’s what this already feels like to so much of Miami, before the “historic” baseball game has even been played. As if the Cubans who fled to this country haven’t already felt enough of those losses over the decades. Lost childhoods. Lost roots. Lost families. Lost land. Lost freedoms. Lost lives in the ocean that divides Cuba and America like the million miles of distance between desperation and hope.

So much happy coverage on the television this week. Historic visit! America and Baseball celebrating themselves. Obama and Jeter and ESPN head toward communism like it is another cruise port, so many symbols of Americana descending on a rotting island stuck in the 1950s, and it doesn’t feel quite right back in Miami, like watching a funeral morph into a party. The history of my own people feels like it is either being ignored or trampled here, and I’m not quite sure which of those feels worse. …

I’ve never known anything but freedom. My grandparents and parents made sure that was so. But now my grandparents are dead, and my parents are old, and the Cuban regime that strangled them somehow lives on … lives on to play a baseball game with our country this week. America extends its hand toward a dictator who has the blood of my people on his own. And now my parents, old exiles, have to watch Obama and Jeter and ESPN throw a happy party on land that was stolen from my family … as the rest of America celebrates it, no less. That’s going to hurt, no matter how you feel about the politics.

But wait...The Donald's for it, so doesn't that make it a good thing?

Plus that nearly 50 years of isolation, and embargo have done so much to weaken the regime, and improve the lives of Cubans.

You know one definition of insanity is doing the same thing over, and over and expecting different results. Considering the embargo hasn't accomplished jack for our goals, what is wrong with trying a new approach?

Fine. Bring something to the table.

It's too late for Obama to bring something on the table. What he did was overcoming the taboo. He had nothing to lose. If it works, if Cuba becomes little bit more democratic, capitalist, he wins. If not, no négative consequences for him.

For him, for the US, for the cuban people,no negative outcome is possible. It will be either positive or nothing will happen.
