People should do some historical research before they make any judgements about Obama visiting Cuba this week. The Reagan trip to the Soviet Union was preceded by Nixon's visit there way back in 1972 the when Leonid Brezhnev was the general secretary. At that time in history, we had a very tenuous relationship with the CCCP....tensions were high and it was still part of an era that was fondly remembered as the "Cold War". Neither side conceded anything nor gave quarter for any perceived sins during that visit. Still, the action was beneficial in establishing a dialogue, no matter how minor. It never hurts to communicate regardless of the differences.

We do a shitload of commerce with a number of nations whose human rights and political histories are certainly as bad or worse than Cuba's. The only way that we could absolutely make a difference in Cuba's willingness to consider a more humanitarian approach to their society and economy is to make it in their best economic interest to do so. Why else would they accept our current olive branch? Normalization of diplomatic relations with Cuba is the right thing to do. Sorry, but anyone who thinks otherwise is just plain wrong. If that was Trump or Cruz standing up there with Fidel's brother, y'all would be applauding his ability to accomplish what Obama couldn't so, in my opinion, this unconditional partisanship crap should be given a rest as it applies to this subject.

Nixon only negotiated the Salt I treaty. Detente was a term heard throughout America during that era. Completely apples and oranges compared to Reagan's efforts.

Because it's not going to work. All the money that will come in is going to go straight to the government, the Cuban people will not see a dime. We're rewarding a murderous regime. Then you are an idiot. He said there were no concessions, both Reagan and Nixon got concessions ABM treaty eventually, and Reagan walked from Reykjavik. That's how you negotiate, and the Soviets came back to the table.

And now my parents, old exiles, have to watch Obama and Jeter and ESPN throw a happy party on land that was stolen from my family … as the rest of America celebrates it, no less. That’s going to hurt, no matter how you feel about the politics.

It's too late for Obama to bring something on the table. What he did was overcoming the taboo. He had nothing to lose. If it works, if Cuba becomes little bit more democratic, capitalist, he wins. If not, no négative consequences for him.
